When we first got Jake, during thunderstorms he and I would sit in my garage with the doors open and watch and listen to the storm. The sound never seemed to bother him, and we shared some good sittin' time together.
On Independence Day, a nearby town has an annual fireworks display, and they shoot it off over a shopping mall parking lot. A good viewing place is the strip mall across the street. Since Jake was so good with the thunderstorms, Joan and I decided it would probably be fun to take him to watch the fireworks. Wrong! Jake cowered against the storefronts as Joan and I scrambled to get him to the truck and get him away. He was never the same with thunderstorms. He would cower and hide and shake and drool. We always felt so guilty about that. |
aww poor jake and dancer.
walter also experienced a thunderstorm the other night, he started barking at the window then pawing, so my dad took him out to do his business (this is 3am by the way).. it was hailing and i guess walter really liked it because he was barking at the hail and trying to pounce on the little hail balls... but he is scared of thunder, he spent the night in my parents bed fully alert. thank goodness walter doesnt like to sleep in my room! |
I hear you about those thunderstorms. My first sheepie Odie could weather anything. We were out overnite in the woods in my backpacking tent in one of those "severe thunderstorms" you get the warnings about on TV but not in the woods. She never showed a sign of fear on the other hand I was totally terrified waiting for lightning to strike us or a tree to fall.
Now Miss Rosie my other sheepie, was definitely not a thunderstorm or fireworks lover. We have a small camp up in the Adirondacks and we always go out in boats on the 4th of July to see the Fireworks. When I first got Rosie, I decided it would be fun to take her along as she loved to go in the boat. BIG MISTAKE, she was a wreck and wanted to abandon ship. We luckily made it back to camp with her, poor baby. Never again. I also live next to a race car track and they are constantly having fireworks, poor Rosie would start shaking and barking continuously, so I would have to take her down and put her in the car, then crank the stereo up, we'd then drive across the street and I got to enjoy the fireworks show, while Rosie the Diva Dog would cruise out in the backseat with her treats, only hearing an occasional boom unlike my apartment which shook after everyone. My brother bought one of those cd's with thunderstorms on it and played it a lot when his golden retriever Zab was young and he was never bothered by fireworks or thunderstorms, he was like Jake the first time, would always just sit there and enjoy it all his life. |
Huggs was young during his first storm, he was alrigth, confused though..... but his brother Rico was a wreck, I think that had an effect on Huggs... He isnt totally comfy with storms becasue of it. Huggs only gets really upset when his brother is.

For those of you with new pups - you may want to look into one of the CD's with thunderstorm noises to play while your pup is still young - if they get de-sensitized to the noise - it lessons the chance of them being fearful when they get older! I've never tried it myself - because I learned of it after Presley was already grown and with Sydney being deaf - it wouldn't help - but I've heard from others that it works! |
