As one also looking at cost reasonable kitchen cabinets........I'd like other ideas as well?? Since I want base drawers, not cabinets, I may be asking for the moon. susan |

No experience, but my cousin LOVES Ikea and has done their whole condo there. Her husband is handy and put blue ones in the kitchen and others in the bathrooms. Me personally...we have a wall unit and tv stand from there and think the quality is really stinky. I'd worry about putting my china in their kitchen cabinets. |
Cost is reasonable. We're actually probably going to do our whole kitchen in Ikea when we get to that part of our project. Pretty much all of their furniture is "modern" so if you're looking for more traditional/craftsman/colonial, etc. you're out of luck since the decorating style is limited.
There is an Ikea close to us so I would think that they are in every state or they should ship too. Only problem about Ikea is that you have to put the stuff together and sometimes it's tricky. Regarding Stacy's comment. Some of their items the quality is very cheap but other things are very well made. Usually the quality is reflective in their pricing. |
For us- even ikea cabinets were too spendy, although certainly they were less expensive then many of the cabinets available. We went the unfinshed cabinet route- which was MUCH less $$, but the quality is not spectacular! (Honestly I'm just happy to have any cabinets... I'm not picky!) |
I love Ikea! I just came back with a busload of stuff from Ikea yesterday-- we just got one in Michigan last Wednesday and I've already gone twice! There's actually not that many Ikeas in the U.S. and ordering stuff from their web site is pretty annoying. I'm not sure if they've changed it, but rather than just buying it all at once, you used to have to wait for them to e-mail you back with shipping costs. It was a too many step process.
They have some really nice stuff and it isn't expensive at all for kitchens, especially depending on the style that you like and/or needs. If my cabinets weren't already brand new, there's some in there I love and I'd tear mine out in a second but James won't let me. Mine are just plain wood but I'd prefer a more modern look. I'm always full of ideas that will allow me to spend money. Myself, I like changing furniture every five years (or less) so the prices and quality are perfect. I don't want or need furniture to last 30 years! Deb is right, the quality is reflective in the pricing, though I don't think there's anything in there that I'd call expensive-- it's like the difference between a $15 tv stand and a $75 tv stand. Jil can pipe up here because her whole awesome bathroom is Ikea. Speaking of which, I'll be ready to go back in another couple of weeks, Jil. Wanna go? |
Ikea has only a few locations. The one by us is a ZOO and you can't miss the bright blue and yellow building. I call it the human amusement park! It does very well and is fun to shop around there. Ikea does have a really great catalog that I think you can request online. It will give you great ideas for decorating! |
I havent heard great things about Ikea cabinets...I have had a few clients that returned them and then bought from us...the quality is poor from what Ive been told....just keep in mind you get what you pay for... |
Love the Swedish Meatballs... |

I'm taking those to the family Kindergarten Picnic tonight...LOL. I like many of their things for accessories, but I can't say what their stuff is like. Cabinets or flooring... I would shop around, and it is true that saying you get what you pay for. Your kitchen is one room, everyone goes to, the one room where you spend ALOT of time in. I would go as high end as you can afford, and do it right the first time, or hold off until you can get what you really really want. |
Hey Jill, did they have outside stuff? Small tables, cool garden art....anything like that? |

I kinda sped through that area so I didn't notice but I know there was some stuff. They put that section at the end so my cart is already too full at that point. |

Well imagine that |
Good grief, I can't believe you've already been TWICE! I've been avoiding that whole area like the plague and it's only 15 minutes away from me!
Sure I'll go! Susan, I love the cabinets in my bathroom! I posted pics last fall when the redo was finished. |
My friend did her kitchen with cabinets friom Ikea and she loves it. They look really good. |

Sure I'll go! Susan, I love the cabinets in my bathroom! I posted pics last fall when the redo was finished. It's closer than that to you isn't it? It only takes me about 25 minutes to get there. I went opening day and it really wasn't bad. A lot of people-- not too crazy but the lines were long. When I went last Wednesday, there were a lot of cars in the lot but we walked right up to the checkout and didn't wait at all. They were missing a ceiling light that I needed and it won't be in for about a week and a half so that's my next trip. |
Being from MN, we have a huge IKEA right next to the Mall of America. It is totally addictive! I think the kitcen cupboards with doors that lift up (like airplane hangar doors) are great. I have bought tons of stuff from IKEA and have been very happy with them.
The display rooms are fun- very creative. Our IKEA has all the cool outdoor stuff out now. They sometimes have some cool pet stuff also. Definitely worth checking out. |
I would reccomend them to anyone except those who just want to spend money for the sake of spending it! i had them in my home from the day I built it, they were just as nice last year when i sold the house as they were the day they were put in over five years ago. I am a loyal IKEA fan, and am not too proud to tell everyone where my high end looking cabinets come from! |
We are furnishing my daughter's college apartment, mostly with stuff from IKEA. We will buy the sofa elsewhere, though.
Like anywhere, you have to look at what you are getting. Some pieces are very sturdy, some flimsy. We've been there twice in the last week, one more trip to go when the bedframe comes in. So far, we've bought a dining table & 4 chairs, lamp table, coffee table, TV stand, bookcase, 4 CD/DVD holders (3 were for her brothers), lamp table for a nightstand, chest of drawers, couple of lamps and some decorations. And with all of the kitchen/bath/bedroom stuff from her previous apts in the garage, I now have to park my poor car out in the hot sun. We have some Danish furniture that we bought in the 80's. It also came in boxes, ready to assemble. It's been in 3 states, 5 homes and still looks great. Especially considering the three kids and numerous dogs abusing it over the years. Best time to go is when they open - even on the weekends. |
I love IKEA, I wish we had a store near us. |
I just helped a friend put Ikea cabinets in his whole kitchen. He loves them. Now he's getting more for his finished basement. I have Ikea cabinets in my house as well as a typical builder-level wood cabinets - Both were purchased at the same time. I wish all the cabinets were the Ikea cabinets. The tracks and hinges (Swiss made) are a much better quality than the other cabinets we have. The drawer interiors are nice and clean. You can get silent closers on the drawers and doors for just a few bucks more - Usually a much more expensive feature available in higher end cabinets.
Low cost usually means low quality, but I haven't found that to be the case with my experience with these cabinets. Of course you have to assemble them ourself, but it's actually kind of fun when you get the hang of it. |
