Said it lasts for 90 days, and that you would basically be asking creditor's to contact you prior to establishing credit in your name - to prevent identy theft. Thought I'd pass the info along to those that may be interested. |

those that have possibly been affected should have received a notice from the dept of veteran's affairs by now... We got ours already keep your eye on your mailbox folks(and your bank ####), then take necessary steps to portect yourselves!
By the way... this is SO RIDICULOUS! It just makes me angry that our soldiers and their families are SO VULNERABLE because of one person's mistake. Grr grr grr!!! |
Yes, the letter.
The one that says,.......... "Out of the abundance of caution, however the VA Is taking all possible steps to protect and inform our veterans." Thank God they are being so cautious!!! ........"We apologize for any inconvenience or concern this situation may cause, but we at VA believe........." Uncle Sam, I DO NOT accept your apology! This should NOT have happened. I get scanned just saying good bye to someone at the airport, my husband got checked going in and out of work because of government contracts. What were you doing!!! It's bad enough that so many veteran's info was on there, BUT to also have those that are CURRENTLY serving! I pray to GOD that whoever "accidently" stole this imformation does NOT use it in any way!!! CREDIT IS NOT THE ONLY THING AT RISK!!! |

CREDIT IS NOT THE ONLY THING AT RISK!!! um, the "risk" is a guy's stolen laptop that contains the information. 99% chance the person who stole the laptop went ahead and deleted it first thing, there's yet to be any related identity theft reported, as you can imagine the hyperactive media would have a field day with it. if I was stealing a laptop, i'd steal one for it's pretty colors, not it's identity contents. since it was taken in an inner city, from a parked car, the likelihood that it is or will develop into a case of identity thievery is very low. |
Hopefully my computer doesn't crash this time while trying to reply. I hate my computer.
Anyway, personally... I don't think it's "Uncle Sam's" fault. This was one person being careless not Veteran Affairs as far as I can see. I also don't think they should get the requested $1,000 for each person on this disk. Makes no sense to me. They should ONLY have to pay for those who have something happen to their credit/identity and it should be the entire amount (whether it's $200 or $20,000). |
They got the laptop back...just thought I'd share since I saw it on the news.

The $1,000 a piece falls under the Privacy Act Laws. Anytime any information about you that falls under the Privacy Act is released it's $1,000-$1,500 per time the info appears. So let's just say that there were 3 lists in that computer. The first list was just a comprehensive list of people serving at a certain base. If your name is on the list that's $1,000. List #2 is a list of how much leave each person has accrued. $1,000 for your name appearing there too. List #3 is a list for sending out birthday cards to each person at that location. The list gets out to people who are not supposed to see it, that's $1,000 too. So even though that information is not that sensitive it is still covered and the government feels that if the proper precautions were not taken and that info is seen by the wrong people then you are entitle to compensation for that.
I don't know if they're still planning on paying the compensation now that the laptop has been recovered and they don't think anyone viewed any of the information contained on it. The bad thing is that all federal employees had just gone through security training right before this and now that it's happened everyone has to do another, more indepth training that says the same thing but includes more "Don't be a jackass" language. |
You'd be amazed how many gov't employees have no regard for security. Taking home of laptops or disks because they "have to work at home" is BS. tThese idiots include department heads or people who think they are important.
But then we have two of the nations labratories, Los Alamos and Sandia. Los Alamos had a scandal not too long ago of a missing disk with nuclear warhead info on it. These disks are kept locked up........the disk was found, but even with the best security, there are jerks who think they are above the law. |

With 12 million illegal immigrants being able to "sneak" into the country, one person walking out with a computer full of secure information shouldn't surprise us. What surprises me is the "lax" attitude of so many people about all of this stuff. I agree, its all BS!!! |
