A few years ago I asked him to sing it and taped it. Though it had been quite a while and it took him a while to remember. Seems he had forgotten the beginning verse of the song. After a few searches on the internet I found the lyric!!! I e-mailed them to Dad so he could re-learn the song and sing it to his Grandchildren. I was so excited to find it I thought I would share it. Billy said it's very morbid....but then again...so are Nursery Rhymes. Here it is: Johnny Rebeck Written By: Unknown Copyright Unknown Away out in the forest There lived a mean old man His name was Mr. Johnny Rebeck And he could surely plan All the neighbors' cats and dogs Were always at his feet So he invented a machine That turned them all to meat Oh Mr. Johnny Rebeck, How could you be so mean We told you you'd be sorry For inventing that machine All the neighbors' cats and dogs Will never more be seen They've all been ground to sausages In Johnny Rebeck's machine One day a boy came walking, He walked into the store He bought a pack of sausages And placed them on the floor Then he began to whistle, He whistled up a tune And all the little sausages, They danced around the room Oh Mr. Johnny Rebeck, How could you be so mean We told you you'd be sorry For inventing that machine All the neighbors' cats and dogs Will never more be seen They've all been ground to sausages In Johnny Rebeck's machine One day the darn thing busted, The darn thing wouldn't go So Johnny Rebeck climbed inside To see what made it so His wife she had a nightmare While walking in her sleep She gave the crank a great big yank And Johnny Rebeck was meat Oh Mr. Johnny Rebeck, How could you be so mean We told you you'd be sorry For inventing that machine All the neighbors' cats and dogs Will never more be seen They've all been ground to sausages In Johnny Rebeck's machine |

I found an audio clip of a woman kinda singing something like this...
As is the case with a lot of folk songs, things get changed over time. It kind of sounds like this version has two different songs raked together at some point. Is either melody the one your dad knew? http://photos.oes.org/displayimage.php?pos=-5840 |
Ron,
I will listen to it tomorrow. I have to upgrade realone player to hear it and it looks like it will take 40 minutes. I had a rough day today and am exhausted so I will do it tomorrow and let you know. |
I have a really really old version of RealPlayer on my system... just when it tells you you need to upgrade, say no. lol
Personally, I hate RealPlayer, so maybe I'll convert it to an mp3 file. |
Did you convert it? Realone player was not telling me to upgrade. It said that it was missing a component that was needed to run that specific song. |
I tried two different approaches, the first let me convert just the first 30 seconds and wanted $25 to do the rest, the second couldn't figure it out either.
I'll look again. |
I have a program for that.....
I hate real player too... |
Thanks for posting this...my Dad too would sing this to us and I've passed it on to my grandchildren.

Was that song part of the Nursery Rhyme that ends with, "isn't that a dainty dish to set before the King?" |

Never heard that. |
"Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie" etc., etc..... |
Nope, just something my Dad used to sing.
It's not a nursery rhyme.... at least not that I know of. |
I finally found this old song here after failing in the past because I was searching for Mr. Tootlebeck. My grandfather used to sing it back in 1950 when I was in early teens. Suddenly I see it in several versions with variation in the name, Johnny Verbeck, Johnny Rebeck, and Dunderbeck. Also he would say "Dogs and cats and old dead rats would nevermore be seen".
Where can I find the melody. Want to pass it on before I pass on myself! codegeezer@verizon.net |
Has anyone been able to convert the .ra file to a more common format? I tried Audacity but it cannot open the file. |
baileesdad wrote: "Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie" etc., etc..... that's the tune i've heard it sung to. my sisters came home from girls camp singing it several years ago. i thought it was hilarious. looked it up today cuz i didn;t know all the words and it was stuck in my head. cheers! |
I woke with the song in my head this morning. My mother used to sing it to us -- we'd cringe and laugh, which made her laugh. She's been gone for several years, and it was a fun way to 'have' her back. I had to get up and go online to find the words and 'eureka' I found the lyrics you posted. Thank you! And thank all of our parents who passed this to all of us -- let's keep that tradition alive. |
Glad to be able to help! Such a sick and twisted but funny song. |
It's incredible how a song or lyric can pull you back in time. I'm admit I'm such a weenie though. Even Hasel & Gretel gives me the willies. |
