My new addition, 7 month rescue OES

Good evening. I am happy to say I finally have made a new addition to my family. My fiance and I have rescued a 7 month old OES from the Huron Valley Animal Pound in Ann Arbor michigan.

To be honest, I have always wanted an OES. I had one growing up, and have such fond memories with him. Well, less than 24 hrs ago, I wouldnt have dreamed i'd have the wonderful OES i have now. However a friend who also has an OES got a call from the pound. Saying they have a pedigree OES who was 7 mo old had some issues They expressed that she was aggressive with other dogs and had a food aggressive issue.

Well, So far, she has prooven them wrong. We have had her since 5pm Est today, and she has been wonderful. We brought maverick(our friends OES) over and they played together. She acted like any other puppy/dog her age would play. Maverick barked way more than she did, and it was all out of fun. they shared a water bowl together, and she didnt even act like he was intruding.

So 7 hours later, writing this, i am very confident she will grow up into a wonderful family addition. She needs some training, but as time goes on, especially with classes we plan on starting in july with her, she will be perfect.

In the meantime, I do have some questions. I have taken her on a few walks. She pulls most of the time, I am curious what are some basic steps I can take so she keeps pace with me, not me with her. Anyways, I am glad to be part of the OES community. Thanks for all your wonderful reading in the past.

Congratulations!!! That's terrific. Looking forward to pictures!!

For pulling on the leash, I use a Gentle Leader headcollar (which makes the pulling less strong and easier to control) and then do a variety of things to deter the remaining pressure on the leash starting with a gentle tug the moment she seems to be trying to get ahead, a complete stop and we don't move until she walks back and stands next to me, make her sit to calm her down, and change directions if she seems too insistent.

Initially, it can take a long time to go from here to there and you have to be patient and calm. If you give in to the pulling because you want to get someplace, it really reinforces the bad behavior. Through constant efforts to curb the behavior, I can walk both of mine with mostly loose leashes in one hand -- under ordinary circumstances. We are still working on the issue of when friends come up to greet us. And walking them from the parking lot to the Philly Sheepie Picnic -- well, they just pulled the whole way. So mine are definitely not perfect but they definitely have learned not to pull as we are heading to the dog park because if they do, they won't get to go in. . .

Good luck! Can't wait to hear more. What is her name?
Welcome to the forum! :)
Are you in Ann Arbor? There's lots of people from Michigan on here-- in fact, we're planning a picnic in July. You should come!

Welcome!
I will hopefully get pictures for you tonight...My brother lives just a block away. Last night on our second walk, she was nervous because it was getting dark out. Or at least thats what I think. So I am trying to get her used to a routine so that when we go on walks, we visit my brothers place(visit if he is home) and back. There is a fenced in park in between, so I swing by there to get her "busy" work done. My goal is to have her getting used to going there on our walks. She has yet to get busy, just sniffs around everwhere.

As for the leesh, at work today i did some research into the topic. One of the idea which I tried today was the leesh looped around her shoulder and arm and back through the collar, so if I tug it isnt on her throat. It seems to work much much better than last night, she still tries to pull ever so slightly. but not even 1/2 as back as last night. She is the most wonderful animal. We have had her less than 24 hours and she likes to cuddle. I think the previous owner let her on the couch, so thats one habit to break(using balloons and tin foil).

Anyways, for those who are wondering, my Fiance and I are located in Kalamazoo. She is finishing up her masters in Occupational Therapy, and I am waiting for her to finish to complete my BA in business(someone has to bring home the bread). We are hoping to train in her to become a therapy dog.

So when is this picnic? Ann Arbor isnt all that far, I drive the Kazoo to Detroit at least 20 times a year to visit my parents.

Congratulations on your new sheepie and welcome from Australia.
Congrats on your new dog!! How exciting for you!
What is her name?
As for getting her used to the walks at night...talk calmy to her as you walk. That should help her become more comfortable with it.
I had a German Shepherd that refused to do his business except in our yard. He did sniff a lot when we walked. At least I knew I wouldn't have to bring any baggies on our walk. :D Or have to walk all the way home with a package
Check out this thread for info on the Michigan picnic. We're actually going to hold it at Lyon Oaks Bark Park in Wixom. Construction willing, that's only about 15 minutes out Detroit. I do still have to check out the other possible location, the Orion Oaks Bark park. That one has a pond and everything.

People that give their dogs away often make up things to make themselves feel better about giving the dog away. When I got my Komondor, his first owners claimed that he was aggressive to the man of the house. That couldn't have been more untrue when we got him. At 6 months old and 80 pounds, I have a feeling he was less than gentle with them and they mistook that for being rough and aggressive rather than a giant, clumsy puppy. Now he's 9 months old and he's still a giant, clumsy puppy. He's sweet and happy and we haven't had a single problem with him outside of normal annoying puppy behavior!
yeah, i love her to death. Seperate I think we have our own flaws, but together, Onyx and I are better for it. I do have one question, maybe this is the wrong place to post it. But when we put her in the crate she starts crying, then pees in it, this has happened 3 times now. She is 7 mo old and weight just over 60 lbs. i think she is uneasy being in it. Is there any way to help her understand its her den, and her safe place? Beyond that, we really dont have any complaints. She is just a puppy...and act like it. I love how OES hop around. :) Anyways, she has worn me out today so I am off to bed. Tomarrow is a new day! Thanks guys

We are going to try to make it to the picnic and bring our other local OES friend along.
Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you've got lots of fun days ahead! :D
How exciting! Welcome to the forum! I can't wait to see pictures and read about all your adventures together! We have a 4 month old named Fozzie who is just starting on the Gentle Leader...great invention.
Welcome to the forum! Onyx sounds like a handful - so typically sheepie!!

As for crate training, there's a whole section on that topic here on the forum. I'm clueless on the subject as I've never crated my dogs.

Training sounds like it's in order. She needs to learn the household rules and what her boundaries are. She's still on her good behavior from just being adopted. When she settles in and starts to feel really comfortable with you - watch out! Then she'll start testing the waters. All the more reason for training.

Congratulations! :cheer: Please post pictures - we LOVE pictures!! We CRAVE pictures. We LIVE for pictures! (Did I mention we like pictures??)

The Gentle Leader is a great help - I'm really impressed with it!!
Welcome to another Michigander! All sheepies and wannabes are invited to the picnic, the more the merrier :)
Welcome!
