On my way to work this morning-A doe giving birth!

Early this morning while driving to work on a back country road we rounded a bend to the sight of a Doe giving birth to a fawn LITERALLY in the middle of the road. Doug stopped the car at almost the same instant the baby hit the road. ALthough this was a back road it is also a well travelled road and we didn't know what to do. We didn't want to drive on and leave the baby in the middle of the road to get hit by the next car tha came along.

I have no idea WHY the Doe decided to give birth in the middle of the road, the only thing I can figure is that she may have been in the grass near by and something scared her out into the road at the "wrong" moment. We stopped the car and got out wanting to help the Mom and baby off the Road but knew we shouldn't touch the baby, so we really just kinda huddled around them.

The Doe was pretty upset with our presence and the fawn was so new it wouldn't even stand on it's legs yet but our closeness was enough to encourage Mom to help the fawn crawl (the baby could not stand yet) off the road into the grass at the side of the road where she proceeded to clean the fawn up and the fawn started to make attempts at standing.

As we were driving away (there wasn't anything else we could do) I was fretting about whether Mom and baby would be OK and Doug looked over at me and said, "You won't be so glad you saved that Deer next winter when it jumps out in front of your car on an icy road"

Amazing story, I sure hope the mom moves away from there.

Thankfully you came along and oversee'd the event and if traffic was to come you could have helped.

:clappurple:
Good you saved mom and baby from being hit. I also hope they relocate far far away from the road. About 2 weeks ago I was driving home from the barn around 6pm. It was still light. The road isn't real busy but canabe. Fortunately it wasn't at this time I was putzing along about 35 mph thinking about work and I looked up to see a deer 10 feet in front of my car. I stopped and beeped the horn and the rest of the herd bounded across. I like deer but they are a menace.
Wow, Ginny, what a unique and wonderful experience! I really hope both Mom & baby were able to move back off the road into the trees to stay safe.

I've never seen a deer giving birth. But last spring I did stop and get some baby skunks out of the road. They were following their mom and she had been hit & killed by a car. There were quite a few of them and they just kept coming out in the road to her. Poor things. :(

So, I got a long stick and scooched them off the road and then moved the mom off the road, too, so they wouldn't keep going back out there to her.
I felt terrible leaving them, but had no idea what else to do. If I had tried to pick them up to "rescue" them, I would've need rescuing myself. :?
Awesome! Nurse Ginny to the rescue! 8)
Good thing you and Doug were there to help out.
That must have been quite a site seeing the miracle of birth happen right in front of you.
Very Cool!!!
What a situation! Not too many people get to experience that! It sounds like you where there in a nick of time to help save the baby and the mom. How cool! :D
What an awesome experience. So special to see a beautiful creature like that come into the world.
Awwww, Ginny is a little fawn's Grandmother!

That was very nice.
Hmmmmmm, I wonder if I report it to my squad they will give me my "stork pin" for being the "on scene" EMT :lmt:

It's worth a try!

Wow! What a once in a life time experience :D

You did great... you didn't interfer but made sure the mama and baby were safe while on the road and stayed until they were safely off the road before going on your way. That's the very best one can do when dealing with wildlife (I did wildlife rescue for years... not deer though).

Good job and thanks for sharing your amazing experience with us :D

YAY Ginny, what a wonderful thing :D
How cool! Good thing she had you there to help keep the baby safe :)

As a veteran deer hitter (?) I agree :) Still, it was a nice thing to do.
Awww I'm so glad you waited til they were off the road... :)
No stork pin! Just being there doesn't count, you have to assist in the delivery! You should have ran out and caught it before it hit the road, then you get your pin.

There are somethings that you just don't wake up in the morning thinking you'll see. "Maybe I'll be driving to work today and see a deer give birth, yeah it feels like that kind of day."
NO FAIR!!!!!!!!!!! I ASSISTED....... well sort of, I directed traffic.... well kinda....... if there had been any traffic I would have directed, if she had need any assistance I would have assisted wellllllllllllllllllllll
no stork pin :x
What an awesome experience!! In the early morning hours, when everything was quiet and peaceful - wow!
From another unfortunate veteran deer hitter: I'm glad you helped them. At least you did something. I think it's the things we do when no one's looking that are the most important. :) Funny, how you can't stop worrying about something like that. What to do? What to do?

Lol. You know that's true! Even after hitting 3 deer myself, I've always been way more upset about the deer than myself or my car anyway. I get mad at them for running out in the road.
Wow!! What an amazing story! Bet it gives you a sense of awe when you see something like that!
