Kitchen design help

Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone knows of good, well-priced stores to shop for kitchen stuff, like islands...I feel like I have looked everywhere and can't find anything
(and by well-priced I mean just slightly above cheap :D )

I hear ya! I look at those at JC Penney and even on sale they are beyond me. I've considered putting industrial wheels on an old chest of drawers and a nice top.........but I can't find a reasonable chest of drawers. Maybe you'd have better luck. I'd stip it and put a color paint then antique it.
AHEM... DARCY!!!!!

Darcy is the kitchen goddess, so she can help you with tons of design ideas. But we had to completely redo our kitchen (it was pretty much non existant) and here's what I did to keep costs down:

Bought unfinished cabinets from Menards and finished them myself. Menards is a midwest home imporvment store, similar to Lowes or Home Depot. Hitherto, I'll call the HIs.

Bought countertop that had been abandoned from a previous order... it's gorgeous and I paid about 100$ for all my counters in the whole kitchen! We had to chop some of it up to make it work, but at that price, who cares!!! I'll take a little more labor over extra $$ any day :)

Just check with the various H.I. stores in your area to see if they have any abandoned orders they need to get rid of... you'd be AMAZED what they have lurking in the back room. Don't be afraid to make friends with one of the supervisors of the kitchen area at your favorite H.I. store... If they like you, they'll work harder to find you the good deals. If you have any friends or family members that work there(or know people who do), utilize them too!!! Many times they'll have stuff lined up in the back part of the store.

As for florring, I bought our cherry laminate from a flooring discount place called lumber liquidators, for way cheaper then you could find it anywhere else, and it is SO PRETTY! If you want to see what I've done, there are some kitchen pics in my album, click on the camera!!! Feel free to pm me if you have ?s since we JUST went through this :)
Ooh, Karen, I LOVE your floors...that's what I want in my kitchen, but hubs says no. That's okay with me because we're only going to be living here for another year or so.
That's what also makes doing the kitchen so hard. We want to update it and make it look awesome, but at the same time not spend too much money since we'll be selling relatively soon (and not make it too personal because it might not sell as well).
Wait a second... am I going overboard again??? what kinda kitchen stuff??? I thought you were talking remodeling but umm maybe not?

I did buy a very pretty mahgony stained and granite mini island at Target on clearance for $75.00...
Steph, you can go to a kitchen store that sells misc kitchen stuff and see if they carry islands or like susan said...find a nice piece of furniture and use that as an island...Ive done a lot of kitchens where a bean/ spice cab is used and it looks beautiful...another option is a table with four legs..you just want to make sure that it is closer to 36'' in height and that you have at least 36'' from any perimeter cabinetry.

Use your imagination...a piece of furniture is definately cheaper and you can take it with you when you move......take a pic of the area that you have...I really need to see....
Okay, I just uploaded the best pic of my kitchen that I could find (on my work computer)

I'll post it as soon as it's approved.
We want an island that has better storage capacities (our just is a bog box basically) and has an eating capability.

Okay, here are 2 pics that show somewhat the dimensions of the kitchen...

This is the other side of the kitchen (you can see our existing island)

Storage capacity for what? It is a small kitchen...IF it were mine, Id do a dark stained table with 4 legs and a shelf under...and hang a pot rack above....since your kitchen is white and yellow (my personal favorite :D ) you can buy anything with color that would really make it jump....a green, red, dark brown, navy or deep blue....just use a color that you find in the ajoining room....I dont think Id do a big heavy cabinet, only because the space is small....you want it to look cozy and inviting...and you are on your way....the color is great so far...as the fab five would say, "you just need to jooze it up a bit!" :D
Ummm Madam, your torchiere lamp looks a little fuzzy...
Ron--that's decorative ribbon hung on the chandelier for Christmas...it's gone now

Darcy--Thanks--I like the yellow, too, although I was thinking of toning it down a bit before we get our new counters in...I agree with you about the table instead of island choice. The only thing is that we added a potrack, but our island is still full, so where would all that stuff go? All our cabinets are full (many are odd sizes so nothing really fits in them). We are adding a cabinet at the end of the counter to add more space (we are putting a dark granite counter on top) so we'll get a drawer and a cabinet in space added

I'll bet it's tough to read by, too.

I was referring to the fuzzy torchiere lamp that seems to be leaning on the bannister.

I see big closets...can one set of those be turned into a pantry, add shelves and store things that are bulky, and not used as much.

Leaving the half of the closet for the jackets/shoes..also only keep current jackets...store out of season in a box in the garage, or donate.

Seasonal stuff etc. Lg cereal boxes, flour, baking dishes that seem to be too big for anywhere.

You do have a cute kitchen tho. My next big project is our kitchen, but first my backyard.
Ron that is too funny...takes you back to the 70's "shagariffic baby"...
That's a very modern lamp! Torchieres shine the light up to the ceiling (mostly)... it isn't a Lava Lamp!
Ron-

Didn't you know that fuzzy lamps are the uttermost in lamp fashion at the moment? Only the most fashionable people have them!!!
LMAO :D :D
Steph - pardon me for interjecting this here - but the pic of your dining room is great! I love the way the paint turned out!! :D

Maybe I'll get energized and go shop for paint this weekend. :D
I feel like such a dork--joke went right over my head!!! 8O
But yes, Barney is VERY hard to read by

Daisie--the washer and dryer are actually where those closets are. They pretty much take up all the space, although there is a shelf above them that we keep the extra paper towels and laundry soap, etc. We are thinking of moving the washer dryer to the garage (basically on the opposite side of the wall where they are)...and that would give us a TON of extra storage space.

Thanks, Tammy! I like how the dining room turned out too! I swear, I think I am a paintaholic...
Would you like to take a road trip? I could sure use the help!! :D
Hmmm, I DO need some new furniture and I hear NC is a good place for that...maybe some painting and shopping...hmmm....
That's a CAPITAL idea!! :D

Hickory has a really wonderful furniture mall. Four levels!

Now...when can you come?? :D :D
I love the yellow paint in your kitchen, Steph. I think it's just about the same color as we painted our dining room. It's so cheery and welcoming! We used to have our kitchen in the condo painted a very light yellow. I'm usually so scared of color, but when we moved into the house I knew I wanted a loud yellow dining room
If you are comfortable with the washer and dryer moved to the garage and have the plumbing for it...I'd say go for it. Sounds like a great idea, to get those closest turned into a big pantry, and storage.

Ron the reason I thought of the 70's was because of Barney's shaggy coat...with the shag carpets of the day. Now combine the two and you have a shaggylamp to accessorize your home...perfect for the groovey home owner.
My parents orders their furnitures from NC and have them shipped all the way to California... They're moving there next year after their new house is built.

Ikea has reasonable furnitures (especially for the kitchen) im not sure about the quality but they do sell unfinished islands - you can paint or stain it. check it out? Im sure they have it in your state.
