My breeder had a bitch (sounds so funny to say that) in the show that did really well. She sends the dogs she wants to show to live and be trained by a professional handler away for a month. I could really sense the rivalry among people showing. I didn't like that. I guess any competition it is like that but I think about that ultimately isn't it about the love for the breed? I talked to a couple of other OES owners that were showing and each of them owned about 10 OES's at their homes. I can't imagine having that many. We'll see if Frank makes the show quality cut. It's too early to tell now at 11 weeks but it should be an interesting journey. |

Glad all went well at the show. It must be a hairum-scarum at times. At least you were able to see what is expected and how different breeders prep for the show.
At what age will Frank have his first showing? With that face full of personality he'll probably charm them all. Good Luck! |
Hi,
The breeder says at 6 months they can pretty much see if he is show-worthy. (If he doesn't make the cut it will not bother me in the least.) There are puppy classes for showing but usually about 18 months is when their adult coat will really be in. I have a lot to learn but it might be fun to do for a little while. I want my pup to be a happy boy first and foremost above anything else. A lot of these dogs with show potential get shipped out to a professional handler for about a month so they can work with them. Sending my dog away for a month will not sit well with me, so if anything, it will probably only be a local thing for us. |
We started showing just last year in the uk and have become hooked. Our young lad (18mth now) has been doing okay often getting 2nds and the odd 1st. It is really hard work but we found that there are lots of very helpful people around with some very useful tips.
We dont send our dogs away for professional handling in the uk most people do it themselves. Im sure thought that some do use professionals. Any how good luck to you and remember The best way to cope is not to take it too seriously, and that you always take the best dog home!!! |
