We had to leave him there...none of his blankets, toys or anything. It all happened so fast, and it is too far to pack up things and go back. They'd be closed. The procedure he is having is " grid keratotomy". They scrape the cornea, pull out some cells and then they sew his inner eyelid up over his eyeball until it heals. He is having it done tomorrow morning. But he has a heart murmer so they are taking X-rays first. It was unbelieveable what he put up with in there. The drops, and the poking, and prodding, and big lights, and then bringing in a second person to do it all over again. They stuck paper tabs in his eyes to measure the tears he produced...both eyes. They stuck Q-tips in between his eyeball and his inner eyelid, to pull it down and then held it and looked, and pushed, and prodded some more. He never said a word or even struggled. I can't get the look out of my head...of him watching us walk away and leaving him there. I bawled all the way home, and can't stop. |

Poor guy, I hope it goes well for him and he doesn't have any problems.
Will he lose his vision in the eye? Sending Bosley some good thoughts |

The vet called this morning to say that the chest x-rays showed that his heart is changing. More risk to the surgery, and he needs to see a cardiologist at some point in the future to determine management of heart disease.
We proceeded cautiously with the eye as another option we had was to do a kind of patch job and hope for the best...but he didn't think it would help. And if it didn't work he'd lose the eye and have to have surgery anyway for that. So we went ahead, the surgery was 30 minutes and the vet just called again, to say he came through it and so far so good. I will get a call, again this afternoon to advise for sure if he is OK to be picked up tonite. Then weekly visits back to the big city for the next bit, to monitor the progress, a cone for at least 4 weeks, and no romping around with Dixie or at the dog park. I jsut want my baby home So folks, hug your healthy dogs, and watch for any sign of something not right. Bosley was just rubbing his eye for a couple of days...no swelling, tearing or anything. And as for his heart condition, he was an SPCA pup we adopted exactly 1 year ago today, so who knows what kind of breeding he came from. At this point we don't know if his heart is a genetic problem or a fluke or what. It would be nice to know his genetic background right now. All the more reason to make sure any breeder that is being dealt with is only breeding dogs that have been tested against hereditary defects, so doing thier best to produce healthy dogs. And back into thier pedigrees, too, as often they show up every 2nd and 3rd generation. Even good breeders produce dogs with problems, but at least they try to eliminate problems and can adjust thier breeding program accordingly. Without a pedigree you have nothing to research. Anyway, we hope that his eye heals OK, and then we will tackle the next hurdle. Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers. Much appreciated. Geeez. We never thought that Dixie would be the healthy one of the two! |
I've still got my fingers crossed... Glad he's doing well so far! |
Give Bosely lots of snuggles and smooches from me and Murph and Dud...
I am glad the surgery went well and I hope the results are even better (no lose of eyesight). I will be sending good thoughts your way. |
Nicole,
I am so sorry to hear about Bosley's heart problem. I hope it's something simple. I am glad to hear that the surgery went well. Sounds like you will be very busy with him in the upcoming weeks and his trips to see the big city. I hope he has a very speedy recovery. I also hope he does well with the cone. Harley had one for 24 hrs. He ran thru the sliding glass door and the door wasn't open far enough to fit the cone threw. Needless to say the cone didn't make it. When you pick him up tonight give him lots of kisses and hugs from me and the Sheepies. Also big hugs to you. This much be so hard for you. |
So glad to hera the surgery went well for him, hears hoping he heals FAST and that his heart condition improves! |
Any news from the Specialist about how Bosley is doing? |
Bosley is home....YAAAAHHH
He is groggy and looks so awful. I told our family that we are having NO visitors for a few days. He is only to go outside for a few minutes at a time, and cannot run around in the back yard...we have 1/2 acre, so hubby cleared out the 10 ft by 10 ft kennel we have so that is his bathroom for the next 3 weeks. He and Dixie cannot play together, so Bosley will get walks for excercie instead of dog parks and runs in the yard. I need to keep his eye clear of "eye guck". He looks at you and his whole eyeball is fleshy red, because of the eyelid pulled up and over it. It is very spooky, and gross... like he is possessed or something. And I have to put drops in it twice every day, so I HAVE to look at it. Hubby would just gag... But he is home, and getting lots of hugs and treats. I am so happy I took a picture I took of him sleeping, eye is closed, so not too gross. Looks very sore Click on my camera to see it. We just want him to get better, now, so he will take it easy for the next while. I guess Dixie misses his paying with her, becasue she has been a real monkey all this time! Like a bratty, spoiled lettle thing that is not getting enough attention. The way she clears the baby gates, and the coffee tables and up over the couches as she races around....she is out of control!!! But we love her : ) |
I'm glad he's home. Nothing like Mom's TLC to make a guy feel better. |
aww poor bosley! im glad hes home, he'll be better in no time! |
Aww poor guy! I am so happy he is home and on the mend.
I saw the picture of him sleeping |
Oh, poor Bosley. This all sounds so painful and it sounds like he is taking it all so well. What a trooper! Keep up the good nursing, and give him a big hug for me. |
Oh that poor, darling baby!! What an ordeal!! I am so thankful that he came throught the surgery okay and can be at home with you to recouperate. |
I just read your thread now, Nicole. I'm so sorry to hear about Bosley. I hope he gets better very soon and his heart checks out okay too. Hugs and kisses for all of you from us. |
Ouchie... I just looked at the picture.
I'm so glad he's home and came through the surgery well. Get well soon Bosely! |
So glad bosley came through the surgery OK, poor baby he is such a brave boy. Cuddles to you all |
Poor Bosley get better soon sending your way |
Wow. THat's intense. My best wishes go out to you, Bosley and Dixie (who surely has tons of excess energy without her playmate). When will the docs look at it again? Hang in there. Sounds like the next few weeks are going to be tough to manage. Big hugs for Bosley, such a trooper. |
SO glad Bosley made it through the surgery okay and also so glad he's home where he can get mommy and daddy's extra special love and attention. What a sweetheart he is! Keeping him and you in my thoughts and prayers in the upcoming weeks. |
Whew, so glad I got home after the happy ending. Poor Bosley, Lots of hugs and kisses for him. Hope the rest of his recovery is smooth. For him and you! |
Glad to hear he's home, I hope he's back to his old self very quickly.... did they say anything should be done to manage the heart problem? |
Quote: did they say anything should be done to manage the heart problem?
Bosley was at an eye specialist in Toronto when they took the chest X-rays. They went over them with us, and sent a report to our regular vet. From what it looked like there is a swelling in one area, but not affecting anything yet...his lungs are clear. It is still a grade 2 murmur, and can't be heard when listening under his armpit. When his eye is all finished with, hopefully in 4 to 5 weeks, we will then see what needs to be done for his heart. The specialist had suggested some preventative meds, but we will see if he needs to see a cardioligist or what... |
Wishes to Bosley for continued success with his recovery!!! |
Hello, I just found your article on Bosley's eye-Corneal grid keratotomy. My 6 pound, mini poodle has a very deep ulcer that won't heal. She is the most awesome rescue dog - we have had her for almost 2 years. We don't know if she is 13 or 15 years old. She needs this procedure done. I am very concerned because of her age. Would you be so kind as to tell me your thoughts on her having this procedure? Thank you very much. Karen Golden kgolden@willowlabs.com |
Guest Karen Friends of ours have had this procedure done twice on their senior Samoyed. It is something to be done by an opthamologist specialist for sure. The 1st time about a year ago he healed very fast. At that time they were told it would very likely occur in the other eye as well, but highly unlikely to recur in the same eye. And that being a Samoyed, he was somewhat genetically predisposed to this. The procedure was very quick - done in something like 15 minutes, and not put out for it - some sort of sedation or numbing done (sorry, can't remember exact details). Then about 10 months later, he had it happen to the other eye. This one has not healed as fast, but it was done by a 2nd DR, not the 1st most expert one. And he's 12 years old now, not 11 - which is old for a Sammie! He is still recovering, as they also found he isn't making enough tears anymore either. But, they would do it again easily, as he was in so much pain and rubbing at his eyes, and so miserable. Good luck! |
