Chummie: Maggie's Protector?

So I've noticed something funny at the park but I didn't understand it til someone clued me in tonight. Maggie is a very popular dog and plays and chases and wrestles with others. She's nonstop motion. Chummie mostly leans up against people to be petted or lies on the ground. Every once in a while, though, when Maggie's playmate gets intense, Chummie jumps up and starts barking at them and sometimes even mouths and pushes at the other dog. Usually the dogs quiet down and regroup with a more temperate style of play. I always thought it was a bit sad, since maybe Chummie wanted to join in the roughhousing. Someone explained to me tonight that it was silly to think sleeping Chummie all the sudden wants to engage in combat. He said he's been watching them and he thinks Chummie is protecting Maggie -- that when the play gets too intense, Chummie jumps up to tell them to take it down at notch and they always respond and then Chummie goes back to lying down. The next few times it happened, it seemed completely accurate. It seemed beautiful to me. :hearts: Has anyone else seen this sort of thing with their dogs?

Awww that is just so heartwarming :hearts:

Chummie is quite maternal towards her maggie, just wonderful and just goes to show what a strong and loving bond she has with maggie.

Yes had the same relationship between Peppa and Kelsey, peppa was elderly and she slept or would just lay around but if anyone or any other dog got a bit rough will kelsey she would get up, bark at them and do the same thing. After all had settled down with everyone she would go back to snoozing or laying down observing everything.

When brie came into the family, peppa just gave both girls a certain bark & look and the boistrus play would settle down. She was great with her niece and grand niece and they listened and learnt from her & she was very protective of them both.

Just wonderful chummie and maggie share such a special bond.
Rags is very protective of Pepsi. If a dog starts playing rough with him she will immediately get between that dog and Pepsi, she will break it up quickly and let the other dogs know to not mess with him. She acts like she is yelling at them when they are running away.
Interestingly enough, Peanut has not tried to attack Pepsi in months. I think he knows Rags will kill him.
That is so sweet that Chumley loves her little sis :hearts:
Even though she is annoyed by her antic most of the time. She does love her.
i think that is really sweet, and will you please give chummie an extra belly rub from me for being such a good sister?
Awww, Chummie!!!! :hearts:
Yup, all of mine do it to some degree. Clyde really watches over Lucy and Bear (Lucy more than Bear). They all seem to have the attitude that "we can pick on each other as much as we want but no one picks on our brother or sister!"
That is so sweet! :hearts: Panda doesnt have a permanant playmate, so I dont know....but it sounds like you found the perfect sibling for Chummie!
Daisy does that with the boys, she projects this attitude and they actually listen 8O That's so sweet of Chummie to look out for her sister :)
'Atta girl, Chummie!! :hearts: Aunt Chris will have an extra treat for you next time I see you!
She definitely gets extra petting and would welcome any treats! I keep thinking back at all the times she has done it and it suddenly all makes sense. The guy who explained it to me said that he had actually gotten up and was watching because he was a bit worried that the dogs were getting too excited and then he saw Chum get up and take care of it. Yay Chummie!!

I am so pleased by how they are bonding. Maggie now lies down in front of Chum so that her face is between Chummie's paws and then Maggie looks up and licks Chummie's chin. Makes me melt -- so cute!! I need to get a picture. . .
:hearts: :hearts: That is soooo sweet!! How wonderful that they are bonding so well. Good girls - both of them. :hearts: :hearts:

My dad actually pointed that out to me not long ago with respect to Beau & Gen and another dog they were playing with. I hadn't noticed how protective they were of one another, but he was right. It's very cool. :D
This past weekend I was at the local Petco where they had several rescue groups with dogs for adoption. Actually, we go there frequently as Daisy loves to see all the puppies.

This weekend there was a beautiful Lahsa/poodle mix F/ about 1 yr old that was really sweet. I spent quite a bit of time w/ her and Daisy and they seemed to get along really well and I decided to adopt her. After coming home I was quite surprised when she suddenly started barking at Daisy and realized she had some food agressive problems - only with the dog bones. (Daisy has marrow bones almost daily and there were some on the floor). I figured this was something that we could work out. We later went to the park and Daisy played w/ her friends and the new one basically followed me around - everyone loved her.

After we got home again, Mork (the cat) was in the house. He was brought up w a GS and loves Daisy so I was terribly concerned (I was told this dog got along w/ cats). Mork went up to the new dog/ then walked away.

Sun (I had picked up all of the bones to avoid trouble) and Mork came back in the house and the new dog went after Mork. Daisy saw what was happening and stepped between them and would not allow her to get to Mork as she was barking and acting aggressively. This happened several times and Daisy basically just stood between them, then one time the new dog REALLY went after Mork and Daisy lit into her big time.

As things seemed to be getting more and more out of hand and Mork became afraid to come inside, I returned the new dog saying that I did not feel it was safe for the cat/ and or the dog but was really surprised about how Daisy responded to protect Mork when most of the time she just lays down and is very submissive to other dogs
Val, that is just so sweet that Chum protects Maggie. I think Annie protects her humans, but we'll find out his weekend what she does with the other dogs when Foz wants to play.

When Foz is out of line and acting spastic without settling down, Annie will moan, growl, or give him a certain look. Foz now realizes that he better calm down or get his nose bitten. It helps us out when Foz doesn't listen to our commands. They have a language all their own.
Izzie did something similar this weekend at the dog park.

She goes to daycare 3 days a week and they always say how well she plays with all the other dogs. However, at the dog park lately she has been a bit anti-social and snippy. She doesn't play as much and mostly just chases her tennis ball and sits on the ground. When dogs come running by she often barks at them and scares them off.

My sister and I think it must be be because we are there. She seems to be protecting her herd, and doesn't want any other dog coming near. The times she tries to integrate herself into the group of dogs is when the roughhousing gets too intense. She runs over and starts barking at them. I usually stop her because I didn't want her to get in a fight. I always thought she seemed like a junior high school kid going, "fight, fight, fight."

This past saturday there was a giant schnauzer (110lbs) who kept following and playing with a 6 month old golden retriever. Whenever the schauzer got too forceful or rough Izzie would run over and heard the retriever away and bring her over by two small dogs that we were standing near. She seemed to be saying "play with these guys...they are more your size." Once we realized she wasn't trying to start trouble with the giant schnauzer we felt alot better.
That is so cute, Amanda! She was great with Foz at the park. It was funny though that the sheepies didn't play much with one another. They seemed busy barking/growling at everyone to keep their distance.
That's so sweet.... :) Chummie is a doll :)

I think they all may have been wary because it was a new place. None of them had been there before or met eachother.

Maybe if we all try to meet a few times a year we can finally get some good sheepie wrestling pictures. Izzie's wrestling name is Oreo Thunder...but we may have to change that since she is more gray and white than black and white now. 8)
