aggression to other dogs

Can anyone give me some tips on how to handle/train a dog that is aggressive to certain other dogs? Problem is that I have yet to figure out which dogs set my 9 mo. old male OES off, but when they do, he goes at them like a wolf. Today it was an off-leash Chow mix and the other day it was my dog (who pulled his newly shaved head out of his collar) and went after a Doberman. He is becoming the most hated dog in the neighborhood!

Is he neutered? Has he been to obedience at all?
I was going to ask the same questions.
To answer your questions, yes and yes.

He was not this way BEFORE he got neutered! I think it is the Male dogs that set him off now, when they were fine with him before. Now, he lunges at them from inside the house or car and wants to go for their jugular.

As for the obedience class, he was great in the class, but had a little problem with one other male dog. That lasted one class and then they put up with one another. We also took him to doggie day camp once to see if he'd be okay with other dogs and they told me he did fine, except for humping a few of them. In fact, the same dog from the obedience class was at camp and they were fine with one another. Maybe it's a territory thing???

I don't have experience with aggression but I do have experience with dogs acting differently when on or off their own territory. My sweet Maggie will bark and growl at people and dogs when she's on the stoop outside of our house but if she's on the sidewalk, she throws herself to the ground in a wiggling display of total goofy submission. I'm actually working to curb that behavior, just to get her to be a bit more calm when greeting others.

With Maggie, I try to anticipate the distraction and then make her do stuff to keep her occupied (sit, down, etc.) until they go by. Instead of trying to figure out which dogs set him off, maybe you could work on getting him to sit when any dog goes by. There was a good episode of the Dog Whisperer where the owner's own anxiety about the dog's likely reaction to another dog seemed to be feeding into the dog's behavior, reinforcing the problem. It takes strong will power to prevent that from happening.

I wish you the best and look forward to an update.
Does the aggression only happen with your dog is on leash? Many dogs only have leash aggression and are fine in other circumstances. I would suggest to keep sending him to dog daycare and try off leash dog parks to keep socializing him in areas that he seems to be ok with while working on the situations that set him off. Good luck!
Is your dog doing this to protect you? Since he's good when you aren't around, is he being macho? Maybe you need to be the one who takes control by putting him in a sit (as mentioned earlier) and if he makes any move, you correct him immediately. When another dog comes near, turn away and walk a distance, stop and put in a sit. Sounds simple, but I know it is extremely hard. Maybe a prong collar would help you get control????

There is a yahoo group called canine aggression, you could join and talk to people there about this.
Thank you all so much for your input. Wilson's aggression to other dogs is pretty bad. It can happen on leash, but I do look out for dogs ahead and distract him with food or take the other side of the street. This seems to work. The problem is very bad though with people walking in front of our house. We have a nice neighborhood with sidewalks lining the streets and, because it's all pretty much a dead-end, people from all over walk around through the area. I have two young girls who open the door without thinking and out Wilson will come like a bat out of hell. He just races to the other dog, scares the owner half to death and causes a fight. We are so concerned for our own liability if, God forbid, he does some damage. Right now, he's only 9 months. I know this is something that the four of us really need to work on in terms of not letting him out. It's hard though, since he got house broken by being let out in to the back yard (off leash) and the yard is not fenced in. As I said before, this was never a problem until he got neutered. By the way, I also got him a pinch collar, which has made walking so much easier. It's just the dreaded dog-encounters I have to worry about.
Sorry I don't think I can really help with this one. I use to have a boxer who after he was neutered, seem to pick and chose which dogs HE didn't like. I had no idea what to do with the guy.

At obedience class he was fine, at doggy daycare he was fine...I FINALLY learned it had to be me, and I was sending him some sort of message through the leash. Perhaps I pulled it tighter, perhaps I was tensing because I was afraid of that approaching dog...so he would tense and act first.

Now with Remy, she loves to approach and greet all other dogs, but in her sheepie ways she can do something that the other dog felt was wrong and IF it gets defensive and lashes out at Remy, she will engage and fight back. Otherwise she smells, and moves on...rarely seeks out a play, she'd rather chase, even try and herd...which also makes all ball playing dogs go insanely mad at her...off leash.

Maybe a halti will help give you more control, or a muzzle so he cannot bite another dog. If he was recently neutered it takes a long while before testoterone is gone...so he can behave as if he was not neutered. Neutering does help curb some unwanted behaviour but if he was always a dominant dog, he won't change all that much. Humping is an example of that...it is a form of dominance over another dog, females will even do this, and young puppies too.
In my case I have an old sheepdog called "Nano" and he looks agressive when he sees other dogs or people but only is nervous. Afther a short time he wants to play with another dog or people.. I think that it is because he spend a lot of time alone, so when we or any other person arrive he has nervous...... But Is a nice dog and he is my "son" jajajajaja.
