The family was out on the front porch last night relaxing in the evening. It was pretty warm and humid, but not unbearable. We were only out there for a few minutes, so we didn't bother bringing out water for the girls. Callie was laying on the concrete porch and we noticed that when she got up, there was a wet spot where her rear end had been. When she moved to a new spot, the same thing happened there. The liquid was clear and it didn't smell like urine (though my sniffer is not very good). When we went in later, I was brushing her and giving her a haircut, and I noticed that the whole area down there was wet. We had also noticed earlier that our other dog had been unusually curious and sniffing Callie a lot. She seemed okay this morning, but I don't know if I should be concerned. Has anyone seen this before? What could it be? Dogs don't sweat, do they? |

She might have a urinary infection or she might be a little incontinent. Make an appointment with the vet, before stop by and get a urine specimen cup (it's sterilized) and get a pee sample ....ideally that first pee of the morning. Take it to the vet's before your appointment and then the results will be ready and waiting. At least that's how my vet and I work it out.
Then if it isn't a UTI, maybe incontinence (which is solved with a pill most of the time)......or some other problem like a malformation back there. Sometimes a little flap of skin is in the wrong spot and the girl can't pee quite right and ends up with problems. In about an hour I'll think of the medical name.......after this coffee kicks in. susan |
Does she lick herself a lot? |
Hi, thanks for your responses...
To answer yourself, she doesn't like herself very often. I finished Callie's haircut last night (poor baby!), and I noticed that she wasn't wet like she was the night before. So I'm not sure what was going on. I guess I'll be keeping a close eye on her the next couple of days to see if it happens again. |
If its terribly hot, it could just be sweat. But, I'd feel better having her checked by the vet to be safe. |
I know this posting was a while back, but what did you find this to be? Stella is having the same problem. |
Spay incontinence is very common in female Old English Sheepdogs for some reason. This can happen after the uterus is removed & the muscles don't hold the urine inside the bladder as easily. Mostly it happens during sleep. We have Rebecca on a hormone supplement called Proin because of this and it does the trick. It's inexpensive & comes in chewable tabs.
It could also be urinary tract infection or kidney stones, but big puddles during sleeping is a symptom of the incontinence. Your vet will probably want a urine sample too so you might want to bring it in with you. |

Well, we took her to the vet and the vet couldn't find anything wrong - no UTI or anything like that. (Sorry I forgot to post that conclusion, by the way...) Maybe once or twice since this time I have noticed that the hair on one of her hips was a little wet when I let her out of her crate after work. But other than that, we haven't had any more problems... ...all of that to say, we didn't really come to a conclusion. But the problem seems to have gone away. Is Stella having this problem a lot? or only once or twice? |

Maggie has the same problem and I give her a Proin50 about twice a week (every 3-4 days). |
I have been noticing it the last couple of weeks. I thought maybe she was laying on the wet bathroom floor, but when I check the floor, it is dry. So either she is leaking, or she moped up the floor with her furry hips. I really have the feeling it is urine, even though it's not a strong smell. It seems to be happening every day or so, so I think this is something that needs checking, right away. I guess we're back to the vet this week! |
