It might be anal glands, are her poops firm? If not, they are not firm enough to naturally keep the glands expressed. |
YEP, LUCY'S POOPS ARE FIRM, NO TROUBLE THERE. |
It does sound very much like Impacted Anal Glands. Next time at the vets ask him/her to squeeze and see if there is much coming out, get the vet to do that as it is not a pleasant thing & stand way back while they do it
I would also try re-worming her and try another dry food too, the dry she is on just might not agree with her & could be causing a bit of a reaction, so no harm in trying another to see if there is any improvement. Had the same problem with brie and her poops were hard, but turned out the anal gland needed a squeeze Only ever had that done once as once the vet did it, no problems since. |
It sounds like impacted anal glands to me. Annie used to do the same thing all the time. It was gross because her fur would be brown near her butt and her breath smelled. ICKY! You can usually stop in the vet's office and one of the assistants can take her back to relieve them. Costs about $18 |
I know I'm about 4 years late joining this thread but I was doing a google search and found this forum.
I'd be curious to know if you ever found out what the cause of the itch was in Lucy's case. My golden mix does exactly what you described (I mean really-you could have been describing her in your original post from April 2005). She also used to scoot around in circles and I actually had to go get her diapers to keep her butt and my carpets clean. Stanley Steemer's stock also probably increased on her account! The only difference was I never found a connection to food intake (time wise I mean) like you did for Lucy We've (i.e. we and our vet) tried everything. No fleas-on a monthly preventative. No worms -tried deworming-no help expressing her anal glands didn't help much, tried switching to a potato and whitefish diet-still nada tried royal canin skin support SS21-no luck Applying a little antifungal ointment and hydrocortisone relieves her symptoms temporarily as do frequent baths with a hypoallergenic or oatmeal shampoo. It seems to come and go through the year although despite watching carefully, I haven't found a specific seasonal trend. Any thoughts? Ideas? Would very much appreciate feedback. Thanks! |
WELL TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH THINGS HAVENT REALLY CHANGED THAT MUCH. SHE STILL BITES AT IT, SOME TIMES WORSE THAN OTHERS. SHE IS ON NATURES RECIPE LAMB & RICE AND GOES TO HAVE HER ANAL GLANDS DRAINED ABOUT EVERY 3 MONTHS. WE MONITORED THEM AND FOUND THEM TO BE FULL ABOUT IN A 3 MONTHS TIME. SHE WILL GET SMALL MAT'S FROM LICKING HER INNER THIGH SO SOMETIMES I THINK SHE IS AFTER THE MAT'S TOO. I STILL TRY TO WATCH WHAT SHE EATS. (ie) CORN, WHEAT, CHICKEN. SHE DOES HAVE FIRM STOOLS SO I REALLY DONT KNOW WHY HER ANAL GLANDS GET FULL ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT I GUESS SOME DOG'S ARE JUST PRONE TO IT. |
I didn't even know about this! Yuck! My dog bites at her rear end when she's telling me she has to go poop. I wonder if she needs to go to the vet? |
Well, I just called my vet and they said to bring her in! Poor thing, I groom her myself so she has never had this done before and the vet office said she will "feel so much better" after she has this done. |
My Cavalier King Charles does the SAME exact thing! Has anyone found out what it is. In fact sometimes she barks and growls at her rearend and then looks at me like "Help me"... She has been trimmed, anal glands OK, eats only hypoallergenic food and/or food I cook for her, high quality and vet recipe book... I have used coconut oil, combed her w/fine comb, I bathe her and then rinse w/vinegar, water and sometimes add hydrogen peroxide (thse are tips by holistic vets) I have applied a solution w/povodone iodine, have rinsed her every single time she comes in and washed her paws, have applied honey... I mean I could go on and on and on!! I dewormed her recently just in case b/c her poop was mucousy and her poop is just as normal as usual now (tho sometimes has mucus but not a lot, I heard that could be polyps in intestines) She turns around and ends up w/legs all over the place.. sometimes tends to bite hind legs (her area is fine) Sometimes she bites inside her thigh... area/skin also fine... This happens ALL day, sometimes all night but is worse right after eating. I noticed the dog across the street (a border collie) does the same thing... NO VET has ever been able to diagnose her! I am sick and tired of paying money and getting nowhere. Please, if anyone knows what this is, let me know!! THANK YOU! |
JUSTJAY2U wrote: SHE DOES HAVE FIRM STOOLS SO I REALLY DONT KNOW WHY HER ANAL GLANDS GET FULL ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT I GUESS SOME DOG'S ARE JUST PRONE TO IT. Maggie had a problem where her anal gland itself was dysfunctional and so even though her stool was firm, it would never empty. It just squished around like a water balloon. She used to go nuts licking at her rear like every 3 weeks. I finally opted for the surgery to have the gland removed and she and I are both much happier. As it happens, I learned through this that Maggie also licks at her rear when she needs to pee but doesn't want to go outside. (She's a strange girl. A pee withholder.) She starts to drip and licks to clean herself. So now when I see her licking, I insist that she go out to pee. |
Hi guest another suggestion is look at what is listed as OCD and Neurological disorders in Cavs. If you google that brings up a lot on behavioural obbessive disorders noted in that breed."So google" "Behavioural Problems in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels" If your vet and holisitic vet has ruled out it being a health related problem, like allergies, anal sac problems etc, then there is plenty of sites on this to maybe explore that side of the breed and lots of forums listed with people with cavs with behavioural compulsive problems and another problem is listed in the breed as being born with the skull being restrictive to the cavs brain size which is quite a problem in the breed and now being looked at big time in the UK and first signs of that is "Air Licking" or trying to chase a tail or trying to snap and catch imaginary flies, it's caused by pressure on the brain and a listed real problem in Cavs. Might be worth exploring that side of the breed too if you cant get any normal medical answer to what is going on with your sweetie. |
Jack is a butt biter too. I'm almost thinking it is discomfort in his hips. Everything else checks out. But thanks for the info on Maggie, maybe it is some weird anal gland thing beyond the regular impaction. |
