Ran to the kitchen to find the 3 year old crying hysterically, 6 yr old holding a heavy metal floor vent which is attached to the puppy's via his nametag on his collar. His tag got stuck in the vent, he panicked (sp?) jumped up and the grate came with him. I can't believe the 6yr old had the sense to hold it until we got there to keep the pup from choking. Good boy We freed him and promptly went to Petsmart to get a Break away collar with no luck. Anyone know where to find one? Ambrose loves to lie on the vents. I am freaking out |

How scary! Good work by the 3 yr and 6 yr old response
team. Its amazing how quick our pups can get into mischief and potential trouble. So happy to hear all is well. For the breakaway collar try this site- http://www.breakawaycollar.com/yourdog.cfm Hope your is back to its normal rhythm--what a scare that must have been for you and your family, and Ambrose. |
Thanks for the link Zahra!
We were pretty shaken. The good thing about the whole incident is we went to Petsmart and were thrilled to see a 2 yr old OES at the groomers My 6 yr old was so excited and couldn't believe that our little "Noodle" was going to get that big! He watched him being groomed for 10 minutes On another note, I've missed the forum My inlaws have arrived for a 3 week visit andwe have been busy. It would be rude to sit and play on my laptop when we are all together in the evenings, right? So I am sneaking in a visit while they are out shopping with DH Lark Noodle's (aka Ambrose) Mom |
We don't even keep collars on in the house at all. They play pretty rough sometimes and I don't want anyone to get choked. As the hair grows longer it just helps the matts too. They go on as soon as they go outside for walks or to the park but, on our property they go collar free. |

I have breakaway collars for both my Sheepdogs.
I got them thru Ron's link on Amazon for JB Pets. You cannot find a better deal and Ron will get a portion of the sale to go towards running the forum. Also the customer service at JB is unbelievable. They work wonderfully and Pepsi has lost him in a couple of brawls with Rags, so I am happy to see it works well. Our dogs have full access to our backyard anytime they like.. with the dog door. So just incase someone has accidently left a gate open and they do get out they do have ID... besides their microchips, which obviously are not visible to the naked eye. My Sister's dog died in a strangulation accident with a nylon chocker. As soon as I found a good price on them I bought them for my dogs. They really do save lives. |

I agree! Our collars hang on a hook by the door and only go on when we go outside. There are so many things collars can catch on, even just a foot if they are scratching. Of course you need to be careful that he doesn't "escape" without his collar for identification. oops, not signed in. Tasker's Mom |

Same here. OES neck fur mats badly enough without a collar! The only time we have collars on Maggie & Nelson is when we're on vacation so our home/cell/condo phone numbers and addresses are visible At home, even with the electronic fence, the dogs rarely need their collars because they know their boundaries and we're with them the entire time they are outdoors. When we were first married, the house we lived in had a floor furnace. They aren't very common around that area, so our dogs weren't trained to avoid it. Though it was months before it would be turned on, we started out with a gate around it to teach the dogs to avoid it. I worried about burned paws all winter.
We've alway had stockade fences, cinderblock or wrought iron fencing at our homes. Catching a collar on a fence was never an issue for us. For many years, our dogs used the chain collars without an problems - even the babies. I never had any problems with matting on the neck until we got Bailey. So I switched to the rolled leather collar, which eliminated the mats for her. But stories like this made me rethink the collars, again. |
That must have been scary... your kids did a great job! |
Thanks Ron! I ordered one today.
What a great price |
Glad your dog is okay! I would have been so scared! We don't keep collars on anymore due to some comments made on this board |

I'm impressed with how your kids reacted! Very smart, and I'm glad Ambrose is okay. |
Glad to hear that Ambrose is okay! Your kids did GREAT!
I'm in the "no collars" in the house category, too. It's just easier & I have peace of mind knowing it won't get caught on anything. |
