We've done a lot of training and I can't train it out of him - but this is my first dog and I may be doing something wrong. He's great when he's in the house with just the family. Is this a puppy thing, an OES thing, or just bad parenting? By the way, you had to see the look of satisfaction on that 3 year old's face when we crated him during our dinner. She said "Look! He's having a time out!" It was priceless. |

Awww he is just the typical, love me, in your face, aren't I adorable, you have gotta love me!! friendly sheepie.
They do seem to mellow a bit by the age of 3, that's what people forget they are late maturing and that is in the brains & excitement department too. You are doing a great job with him and he is just a very friendly typical OES and I know it is hard when visitors come, especially when they are not dog inclined but that is a personality of a sheepie and he sounds like he is a normal fun and loving boy who loves company and wants to be friends with everyone wether they like dogs or not. Train the visitors |
I agree with Lisa. I remember my parents Sheepie Daisy had this thing about going to people that didn't like dogs. She always went to my Aunt who was deathly afraid of dogs. Daisy never hurt a fly...but definitely was drawn to people that didn't like her... She would just plant herself right in front of her and stay there until she left our house.
We don't get company very often here. Friday Ryan's Special Services Regional Center case worker showed up and the dogs just acted like he came there just for them. They were licking his clothes...trying to climb up on him. Luckily he didn't mind because he grew up on a farm. I was embarrassed by their behavior, but they just really only wanted some love and attention. Sheepies love being the center of attention!! |
From what I've gathered, the slowing down/calming down process starts in between 2 and 3... and continues on 'till late adulthood. |
"And continues on till late adulthood"
So that explains my 11 year old Elissa, Kelsey is so much like daisy, she does the same thing with those that are not too kean about dogs. She can sit in front of that person and stare and stare till she gets there attention. She has one mean Burp when it comes to trying to make friends with the boys buddies too |
Sounds like all the things I love about OES
I do know they can be calmer, and still retain their clownish side... my friend has taken her dog everywhere she goes all 8 years of her life, the dog is with her at all times and so has learned from puppyhood on a daily basis how to behave around people. Dancer and Sky are bumbling idiots around new people. Dancer is not so bad now, at 2 and a half years old, but Sky is just trning 2 next month and still acts like an 8 or 9 month old puppy who is full of energy and bouncy bouncy bouncy. LOL And loud, obnoxious and in your face to get attention. Panda is only ten months old, and calmer than Sky by far. LOL I could trust her anywhere, anytime, around anyone or anything. |
Sounds like before company comes the doggies need to have their butts exercised to exhaustion. It takes some of the starch out of them.
Alas, this behavior is why we love them and why we get fewer and fewer house guests...... Only true sheepie people come to visit and we in turn go to their house and get barked at by their one bitch. She is so territorial ...... she barks and barks, comes for a pet, backs up and barks some more. They have a new little bitch so is so calm and loving......quite the difference. Yes, it is amazing how they pick out the one person in the group who doesn't like dogs. It was my mother and they'd sit and stare at her the whole time trying to win her over. She wouldn't touch them. |
Thanks everyone! I was just feeling like a bad mom because poor Bailey has been tied to my wrist through all of these events. I took him for a nice long walk this morning to make it up to him.
Sheepieboss, that's a great suggestion. I'll try to wear him out first the next time. And Lisa, I'll work on training the visitors Sue |
My sheepdog is about 19 months now, and will NOT be ignored by guests. Its hilarious how he'll stand in front of them with a toy, and if they continue to ignore him, he'll force his nose under their hand for a "petting." Overwhelming amount of dog, these sheepdogs. |
This thread makes me laugh, because ALL my sheepies have NEVER grown up fully! I call them the Peter Pan of the dog world - "I WON'T grow up!"
Even my Drez, at nearly 13 and nearly lame, still has that gleam in her eye and a bounce to her step (as much as she can bounce any more!) when people come over. It's one of the traits that I so love about sheepies - puppies in adult dogs' skin! |
Sue....would you have your boy any other way? I think he is awesome! He is "my little pony" through and through....and I KNOW Panda wouldnt have him any other way either!! |
Annie at age 9, thinks that every person who comes to the house has come specifically to see her. She could care less if they like dogs or not. She barks, then picks up a toy, continuously bashes it into their legs and walks around in circles until someone pets her.
Just a few weeks ago a friend of mine brought her daughter who's 13 to see the pups. Annie wouldn't leave her side as she kept petting her for about an hour I can see where people might get annoyed with her if they don't like dogs or big dogs, but that's just part of coming over to visit us. I LOVE IT! |
Maggie has FINALLY calmed down a little when guests come over (she's almost 9), but her signature move would be when all the guests would be gathered around the coffee table in the living room, she'd pick the oldest, most frail person in the house and just ram herself into her...it was so funny...and the old lady would be patting her head saying, nice doggie... |
