Got an OES puppy by accident

So here's a an unessecarily long story from a newbie.

My wife and I purchased a dog on Saturday. We've spent almost a month looking for the perfect dog in shelters and SPCAs and had no luck. When that process became to heartbreaking to endure anymore, we turned to the pet stores. I know how terrible pet stores can be and I'm not happy that we ended up getting a puppy there. but I could not handle going into the spca for the 23rd time in a month. This Little guy was on clearance at this hole in the wall pet shop. and we played with him and fell in love. He was a mutt, black and white, Cocker Spaniel/Cairn Terrier/Dachound. About 19 lbs & 3 1/2 months old. He was awesome, and looked to be in good health, so we paid for him and "rescued" him out of that terrible store. So we took him home and are totally in love with our puppy, Dante as we named him. He's a great dog with an incredible disposition. He may not be a purebredd, but he's a lovable mutt.

So We took him to the Vet today to get checked outand get some more info from them about how to care for Dante. Well, we showed the vet his paperwork and he lamented the fact that this store was still open and unfortunately still selling puppies. Our boy got a clean bill of genetic health, but unfortunately is host to some tapeworms. Nothing terrible and the vet says we lucked out with the store we got him from. Then He looks at the breed listed on the page and says, this isn't right at all. Our boy Dante is a Cocker Spaniel, but only about 25% at most. He's apparently 75% Old English Sheepdog. So that was a bit unexpected. We had guessed that there was someting else in him, but at most it was collie or something, and we were always skeptical about the doxie.

So here's the kicker. My wife and I currently reside in an apartment that allows dogs under 30 lbs. Since this guy was a mix of all of there "approved breeds" we were able to get him, but we still need a letter from a vet that says he won't grow over 30 lbs. From what it seems, he'll be over 30 pound in a few short months. So thanks to Dante, we're moving out. We've had this puppy for 5 days and he's turned my life upside down. But I fell in love with him when i first played with him and I'll do what ever to keep hold of him.

I did a ton of research on little dogs going into this process, but I know nothing about big dogs, particularly the OES. So I'll be annoying you guys for a while. Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the forum! You'll see that this is a great place filled with wonderful people who love OES or other people's OES. I'm happy to hear that your pup is doing well and it sounds like he has wonderful new parents that are actually moving FOR him. :D WE LOVE PICTURES! Try to post some soon!
Then He looks at the breed listed on the page and says, this isn't right at all. Our boy Dante is a Cocker Spaniel, but only about 25% at most. He's apparently 75% Old English Sheepdog. What kind of paperwork did you receive when you got Dante? Just curious. Kaye
What an odd tale!!!! But congratulations none the less!!!!!!!!! If he has any OES in him he's sure to be a sweety!!! Perhaps your vet will overlook the obvious and write the letter for you......... then who knows, if you take really good care of him and he's really well behaved no one will notice that he's a smidge over 30lbs......................

I never understand the size requirement for apartments. A dog is a dog. Some very small dogs are a pain in the putoot, causing more trouble than a great dane. It's how the dog is trained and cared for that matters not the size!!!

WHen Tasker was very small I had to make a sudden move into a Mobiel home park that allowed "small" pets ( he was small at the time  ). Over the 7 years we lived there he grew to be 100lbs but once the land lady saw that he was well trained and well cared for and we followed ALL THE RULES she never mentioned that he didn't really qualify as a "small" pet.
Congratulations and welcome to the forum!

How lucky of Dante to find such loving parents!

Best wishes to you all, Dante sounds like a sweetheart!

Please post pictures when you can,we love pictures :D

That Paper work was just a print out of what breed they thought he was, list of his shots, who his breeder was and the store's info. They weren't anything special, nor were they in anyway AKC or certified in anyway.
Welcome to the forum! :)
Do you have any pics? :)
EDIT: the pics arent working, are images allowed on this board?

I think he's adorable! I love his little golden arches hairdo-- that reminds me more of a bearded collie which look a lot like OES. :) I think he's got a border collie mix look about him much more than an OES. What made your vet come up with OES for him?

You can only link directly here if the pics are hosted here, but if you go to the pictures part of the forum and all the directions are there.

And, by the way, welcome!

We do things just a little bit differently on oes.org than on some other boards for pictures. All pictures shown at oes.org must be hosted by oes.org. This prevents oes.org from stealing bandwidth from other sites, prevents missing pictures, and also helps to ensure that all pictures are "family friendly" because they have to be approved before they can be seen.

Your registration in this forum gives you access to our photogallery. You can upload pics to http://photos.oes.org and when you do, you will automatically get a little "camera icon" at the bottom of every post you make. If anyone clicks on your camera, they will see all of the pictures that you have uploaded. You will also be able to hotlink them into your posts.

All of the instruction dealing with photos can be found in this thread:

Scroll around a little bit in there to find what you need. If you get stuck, let us know!

Yeah, I'm not sure what made him say that. I wasn't at his appointment, his Mommy brought him there, so I really don't know. He definately looks collie to me as well, and I'm having a bit of trouble seeing him as a sheepie. It'll be like some continual surprise as he grows, so that will an exciting thing.
Congratulations on your new addition. He is adorable! :D

I think he has kind of a Border Collie look too but also OES or Beardie. (But who am I to say... I thought my BC-mix was part Newfie so you might not want to listen to me  ) We have a Border Collie-mix named Maggie and had an Old English Sheepdog-mix named Nikki. Both are/were great dogs. You can see their puppy pics on their website under Maggie & Nikki if you want to compare.

Again, congratulations and we hope you'll post pictures of your baby often!
He's cute... but I don't see oes...

I actually do see long haired dachshund, border collie, and maybe cairn terrier. I don't really see a lot of spaniel either??? Definitely a heinze 57, and definitely cute! :)
Just adorable, congratulations on your new addition, look forward to hearing all about him :D The pictures are lovely, Dante is one cute guy
What a cutie!! Looks like he's got some secrets to share.
He looks like a beardie mix to me. His paws don't look very big. I don't think he will be very big at all.
What an adorable little guy! You could always contact the breeder directly to find out what he is.
Congrats on your new puppy! :D
Whatever mix he is he sure is cute :) His names suits him also.

WELCOME!
He's a cutie. I don't see much in the way of OES with him, but I see terrier and maybe collie.

Do pet stores generally sell mixed breed puppies? (Other than the 'designer' mixed breeds?) Just curious if anyone knows. It makes me wonder where the pet store got this dog from...

The pet store by us does. In fact, at any given time they probably only have about 50% purebreeds. They actually take rescue puppies that people bring in and sell them for ridiculously inflated prices.

Welcome, wish there were more people like you in the world. Apartments can be replaced but that special dog can never be replaced. Dante is a real cutie and a real keeper!
Hi and welcome,

I don't see any OES either, so I would hold off on the move unless you really want to. I think it will stay lean, and smaller...maybe a border collie is the dominant look, with terrier. I see some greying but like the others said the bearded collie has a similar look. The OES would look big and square, and a wirey coat texture. A bearded collie is silkier, like a border collie.

I'd play the wait and see, and if it becomes an issue with the landlord show them the original purchase, that this was a mix of small dogs, and see if goes over then.

Congratulations on the new pup.
I'm no expert but I see Beardie in him too!

Either way is he absolutely gorgeous!

I hope you'll keep us updated with his progress, with pictures, it's always fun to watch a mix grow up.

Welcome to the forum!

And about pet shops selling mixes, a pet shop near my college tends to sell... normally 2 purebred breeds and some mixed breed dogs.

Every week or so me and my friends go down to the pet shop to see the puppies. Last time we were there, there was a woman there very excited about the yellow lab she was buying. She took him home, and one was left all by himself, and he has a lump on his chest, so who knows what will happen to him. They are all so cute though, almost makes me want to snap one up, but I must resist
I don't see sheepdog at all, some terrier.......oh, pooh, we'll just call his a Handsome 57. Can't wait to see how he grows.....or doesn't.
well first of all congrats. on getting him out of that horrible place. and second dante is just beautiful, you and i are in the same boat i dont know much about their breeds, first timer myself learning something new everyday with mine Dutchess. keep us posted on Dante as he grows.
lisa
Thank you all for your encouraging notes. I'm really starting to doubt this vet's diagnosis of him being an OES. the more i look at him the more i see border collie. but I did find a pic of an OES/Border Collie mix that looks spot on. regardless of what he is we love him to death. and he's been acident free for almost 3 days. except for just now. As I was writing that, he peed by the door. neither my wife or I saw that he needed to go out. oh well, he's still just a pup. Hopefully we'll track down what he is, because that would make a world of difference in our apartment situation. Thanks again!
