Hi Vero,
When Tung Tung was still around we tried every brand we could find in Hong Kong. He absolutely refused to touch Hill's. We ended up feeding him dry Eukanuba mixed with either shredded and cooked chicked breast/lean pork or a small amounts of canned Pedigree chicken. That's beside cheese, pb, bread and the odd boiled striploin for his birthdays I think like many two-leggeds, OES don't like food that is actually good for them |
My 13 y.o. OES that passed was on Science Diet his whole life without any major medical problems until the very end. My new pup we have on Eukanuba and we will most likely keep him on the same brand his whole life as well. I've heard a lot about Science Diet being overrated (and overpriced) and that is why I decided to switch to Eukanuba for the new pup.
Sorry I can't give you more advice about dog food. I had a mutt growing up that was on Alpo her whole life and she lived to be 14. I think it depends on the makeup of the dog and how healthy they are in the first place. I have heard that people should change to the better brands if their dog has certain allergies but some people can't afford a more expensive food. |
Hi Vero:
My holistic veterinarian doesn't think very highly of Hill's Science Diet - I got the impression is was due the the price/quality ratio. She also mentioned that since the companies that make dog food often change the recipes for the food, that I should constantly read the ingredients label. If there is a small locally owned pet food store near you, they should be able to recommend a local high quality food. Now that I've said that, my brother's dog (a malamute) has been on Eukanuba his whole life (all of three years) and is doing well. My dogs are eating California Natural and Wellness - both recommended by our veterinarian. |
Vero I feed Drake Hills Science Diet and Drake is doing very well with it. Here in the midwest I have found it not to be that pricey compared to other brands. Petsmart has it on sale pretty often. I tried to change to a less expensive brand but I notice a differience in how often Drake went to the bathroom and the consistency in Drakes stools. It was apparent that Drake was not digesting the less expensive food as well. My breeder began feeding Drake science diet and have continued to do so. In the morning I do mix a can of puppy food with the dry mix and Drake absolutly loves it. The other feedings Drake just gets dry food. Another reason the more pricey food may not be as expensive as you think is because you actually feed your puppy or dog less of the food then the less expensive brand. For example on Science diet you may only need to feed 3 cups compared to 4 cups of another food. The AKC magazine I just got had a great article on cheaper food verses the more expensive brands and this was pointed out. Hope this helps |
When Zoe was ill I took her to a holistic vet for vitamins to help her withstand the chemo. That Vet indicated that most of the foods that list meat and chicken by products on them should not be used. She recommended an all natural food that does not list by products and chemical preservatives. Her thought was that if you wouldn't eat it, why should they (Beaks, feet and feathers. DOn't even want to think about the beef! ugh).
I switched my two at the time to Natural Balance and they did fine with it. When Baily came, the breeeder had them on Science Diet and the vet said to stick with Science Diet for Large breed pups for the first year. I asked my trainer in puppy kindergarden what she used on her dobermans and she indicated a natural food. I asked her why the vet's seem to always go with Science Diet. She said that in Vet school they get a 2 or 3 hour course on canine nutrition and that's all and that the course is sponsered in many cases by Hill's who makes science diet. I'm gradually switching Baily to the Natural Balance (which costs a bit more than the Science Diet). Hope it helps Lorraine |
i've also heard not-so-great things about science diet, which is mainly recommended by vets whose nutrition training was sponsored by hill's.
i can't find the exact link right now, but the forums at doggroups have a section specifically on feeding, and there are really great threads with great links. i learned a ton in there. i feed wellness, which was highly recommended by my vet, but am thinking of switching to raw. other great brands (off the top of my head) are candidae, nutro, and flint river ranch. |

But I had a 7 pounds bag, and didn't want to waste it. so I mixed with other brand i.e. Eukanuba and/or Proplan. |
at first I was very skeptic about feeding Pisco Hills but I bought a bag (actually it`s Prescription Diet I/D) and feed him half-half and guess what he is eating so much better!!! he eats 5 cups a day somtimes a bit moreand his stool is soo much better, he has put on a little wieght (not sure how much but I can tell) my vet originally said I should only give him Hill`s but since I still have half a big bag of Proplan and don`t want to waist it I give him half-half...told the vet and he says It`s ok...(it`s also much better price way since Hill`s here is very expensive). |
