Puppy K graduation

Pippin has puppy kindergarten graduation tomorrow. I'm a little nervous. Luckily for us this isn't a pass fail class... but he isn't spectaular with his downs- I have to encourage him with a press on the shoulder blades and then he flops down like a rag doll, not a nice lay like he's supposed to. His sits are good, but we have to do 2 tricks, and he really only knows "tail" where I point my finger to his hinder and say "tail" and he looks for his tail. I'm also trying to teach him kisses, but that's still pretty spotty right now. I might have to snak some honey or sour cream or something into class and put it on my hand so he'll give me a kiss

At least he's a good controlled walker.

Mike is even coming to watch us graduate! How nice is that :hearts: And I don't have to go back to work Friday, since I took the day off to cook for the shower! Wish us luck! I'm gonna be working on our downs and kisses tonight!

Good luck you two! And maybe Pippin will surprise you! (hopefully in a good way  )
Go Pippin! He will do just wonderfully!!! I can just picture the flopdown ... :D

Yea, Pippen! That went by so quickly! I'm sure he'll do just great. I love the look at your tail trick. Foz will look at his butt when we make fart noises on our hands or if a motorcycle goes by. It really is funny and I probably shouldn't do it, but it cracks me up!

How did you get him to walk went on the leash??? We need help in that department and the rain hasn't helped either. He pulls so much and I can't walk him as my shoulder blades will kill me. I hope he grows into the gentle lead soon!
Well,

We've been workjing on controlled walks for a long time now. but here is how we started them in class:

Take your leash in your left hand, curled up enough so the puppy only has enough slack to walk by your side. Take a squeaky toy, ball, or another object which will capture his attention in your right hand. hold the toy/treat over your left hip and use a cheery "let's go!" command to start the walk. Keep the puppies attenion on you with the squeaky and try to match the puppies pace to begin with to help him be successful. Give him lots of praise and squeakies to keep him at your side, with his attention on you. do this for maybe 3-5 minutes each training session. As he gets better, you can slowly use the squeaky toy less, and eventually you can begin to correct pulling with a very brief yank on the lead.

Note that this is not to be used on regular walkies... I may do this a little bit during the walk, such as when we're crossing the street, but don't expect a puppy to be able to walk at your side for extended periods of time :)

I've found that using a leather leash gives me a LOT more control. Pippin has always had one, so I took it for granted, until we had to trade puppies in class, and I got a puppy on a nylon leash... YUCK! you have no control on those things whatsoever. I love my leather leash!
Congrats Pippin - by the time we get our puppy you'll be able to give us lots of tips! Have fun!
:yay: Yay Pippin!
Karen, Have Mike take pictures!!!
We need graduation pictures!!
:clappurple: :clappurple: Pippin!! Good dog. Controlled walk and sit, good boy. Now the lay and stay and you'll be a gentleman........OK it may take a bit more than 4 commands, but you are on your way!
Yay Pippin! I'm impressed... :)
I'll see what I can do... my dad's got my camera  Maybe I can find a disposable laying around somewhere...
Congratulations.

A really fun thing is to teach him to Hold Hands. When he does it you squeeze his hand. Then he will learn to squeeze your hand back one day. It is the cutest thing. Everyone marvels when Hannah squeezes their hand. Also High Five is a riot.
