Now, when I leave the house to run Errands, I put her in it with a treat...She is yelping and barking and crying before I even get out the back door....Usually she is in it for 1hr, maybe less each day......Everytime I have put her in it, she has peed outside for me 1st. The last week and half, every time I come back, she has peed in the crate, on a towel where she is sitting.....What do I do???????? I have always heard they will not do that! Is she just mad because I have left her? Any suggestions? I am washing towels left and right! PLus I hate the idea that she is sitting in it! |

I found this same thing with Walter. When I got him (8wks old) he slept in the crate, and only had a few accidents at night - either I didn't hear him on time or he just couldn't hold it.
Anyhow, I work at home, and thus never had much reason to keep him in there during the day (he slept at my feet under the desk). I did, however, put him in the crate while running errands, etc, and like you, never left for mor then an hour at most. Same thing, yelping and crying before I could even get down the steps. Peed each and every time. What's amazing is that we transitioned him out of the crate and now just leave him in 1 room and a large hallway (with water, toys, etc ) while we are gone. HE HAS NEVER PEED ONCE!! I'm starting to think he was more nervous in the crate and peed out of fear- as I'm sure he associated it with us leaving I don't know if that will work for you. I think if you're vigilant about the housebreaking, leaving them in a more open space might help with the fear or loneliness. (If you can trust Allie ) I'm sure a more veteran housebreaker will chime in here to give better advice! Good Luck! |
Try taking the towel out. Most times, especially when they're young, if there's something soft in the crate, they'll pee on it. Separation anxiety can attribute to crate peeing too. Even if she's great all of the time, stress can make her spring a leak! |
I agree - take the towel out When we started training Ava, she peed on her blanket - she would push it into the corner, pee on it, and lay on the other part of the crate. We took it out and she stopped. |
Where does Walter sleep now? Is he in his crate at night? Once she is housebroken, I do not care where she sleeps....My friend had suggested putting her in the kitchen while I run errands, I think I may try that. How old was Walter when you tried that? Thanks so much!
But maybe I will try the other suggestion 1st, of not having a towel in there when I run the errands....I really worry that she is having seperation anxiety, being she is constantly by my side, under my feet when walking, even when the guys are home at night and more then willing to play with her and give her attention! I think she is "My dog" and I really did not want that! I want a family dog! Thanks everyone, will try these ideas.... |
Walter now sleeps at the foot of my bed in his little "nest." Sometimes if he's feeling adventurous, he'll jump up into bed with me!
The towel thing definitely makes sense, and now that others mention it, when I had his towels out being washed, he had less of a problem going in there. Let us know how it works! |
Yep- no towels and here's my secret weapon to get Pippin into his crate... A KONG! That's right, the secret to puppy compliance is in that little rubbef miracle filled with goodies called a kong. For short stays pip gets the smaller puppy kong filled with peanut butter... for longer stays, he gets the big puppy kong filled with layers of kibble, apple sauce and peanut butter, topped off with an american cheese slice and garnished with a puppy training treat. He goes right in once he seea me put the kong in, he's so busy with his kong, he doesn't even notice that I'm leaving most of the time! Thank you, oh wonderful kong company, thank you very, very much!!!! |
Iris, I will have to try the Kong! I have only used it a few times, put one king stuff treat in it. She does not seem to like Peanut butter, tried her antibiotic in it, she just spit it out, walked away! So I just put her pill right in her bowl with her food and she gobbled it up!
I can't wait to try no towel!!! I will tomorrow, when I run errands. thanks again everyone! |
YOU MAY HAVE TO EXPERIMENT TO FIND THINGS THAT SHE REALLY LOVES. THE KONG TREATS HAVE TO BE REALLY SPECIAL. PIP ONLY GETS CHEESE WHEN HE GOES IN HIS CRATE- IN THE KONG. HE LOVES CHEESE, SO IT MAKES A GREAT REWARD. YOU CAN EXPERIMENT A LITTLE, TRY OUT THINGS THAT SHE MAY LIKE- CHEESE, APPLES, APPLE SAUCE, CREAM CHEESE, PEANUT BUTTER, ETC UNTIL YOU FIND THE MAGIC COMBO! |
Pippen is a lucky boy! I tried nonfat vanilla yogurt mixed with a little bit of his food the other day in Fozzie's kong and he ate it up...then again he eats anything just like Big Sis Annie. I lure him in his crate with only a piece of a treat. The pups come in from doing their business before I leave for work with the promise of a "treat". I must use the word all the with Annie as Fozzie picked up on it right away. They both run over to Fozzie's crate. Annie sits down, Foz goes in his crate now and sits until I give him a treat. I close the door as he nibbles away! |
Here's another thing you can try in the Kong...doggie toothpaste! |
I can see that I need to start using the word TREAT with Allie.....As of now, I have been just putting her in the crate, with her nylabone (Bacon flavor) sometimes a kong with a treat and her rawhide stick...So I guess I am not making it FUN for her! |
All we have to do with Ava now is tell her either "bed time" or "mommy has to go" and she walks over to her kennel and waits for you to let her in. We tried keeping the kennel open, but then Gertie the spaz-tastic detroyer dog goes in and chews the faces off all her stuffies. She actually prefers sleeping in there at night |
