I'm not familiar with the obedience program in Scotland and probably others on the forum can give a better comparison, since this is my first venture into obedience training and events, but I'll try to give an overview of the AKC obedience levels and awards. Generally each award requires 3 qualifying trials (170 out of 200 points) under different judges. I suppose our "preobedience" would be the Canine Good Citizen award which requires basic knowledge of sit, down, heel, come, acceptance of a friendly stranger, behavior in presence of another dog, etc. No title is given with this recognition. The first obedience title is Rally: here depending on the level the skills are either perforned on leash or off leash, and basically are comprised of more complex heeling exercises with some weaves, and a jump. The handler can talk and praise and pet the dog during the exercises and the heeling is more relaxed and less precise. It is designed to introduce the dog to the basic routines required in the next 3 levels. The next obedience title is Companion Dog (CD) which my guys just earned. It requires precise heeling on leash and off leash, stand for examination, recall and long sit and down with handlers at opposite end of the ring. The next title is CDX (companion dog excellent): All exercises are off leash - heeling, down on recall, retrieve, retrieve over jump equal to the height of the dog, broad jump equal to 2x the dog's height, and long sit and down with handlers absent. The final title is Utility Dog (UD and UDX): the skills required here include directed retrieve, scent descrimination, and directed jumping. |

Out of sight sits and stays: At this point we're working in my basement which is "L" shaped. I sit/down them side by side near the back of the short area with one of those door mirrors mounted horizontally on the opposite wall. Then go to the back of the other side of the basement and watch them through the mirror, ready to correct them if the move out of position. We're up to 3 minute sit and 5 minute down already; goal is 10 min sit and 15 min down. Right not the most complex skill seems to be the down on recall. Barney drops; Maggie - "Duh"! Meanwhile we continue to work on healing to sharpen their focus. |
You're obedience titles are the same as we have here, hard work too and I admire all the effort that goes into each and every gain that you get with the dogs. I have a friend who's OES just got there UD and that has taken a lot of dedication and training.
My other friend just got there CD and is now working towards there CDX. Are you going to take them onto agility down the track? OES do wonderful there too. Years ago in Sydney an OES even went on and got there tracking title as well, the first and only one so far. Great going george and doggies, exciting to hear the progress and really enjoy the photos of them in the obedience ring. |
Lisa,
Love your web sit and beautiful pics of Brie. Long range plans for my guys are UD. Then on to assist dog training. Plan to retire in a year or two and spend my time with the guys visiting nursing homes, hospitals and children's homes with the dogs as support dogs. Agility is out, since my two titanium knees won't allow me to do all the running. |
Wow great thing to aspire too with the dogs, so rewarding to be able to do that in the future.
Best wishes for the next trial and keeping fingers crossed |
Congrats George, there aren't too many OES in obedience and it's nice to see you're doing so well. |
