Windfall oil profits tax? How about reducing the sales tax?

They're talking about another windfall oil profits tax in Washington. I don't know where it stands, or whether it's a good idea or not, BUT if governments wants to tax windfall oil profits, how about the start with themselves?

My state has gasoline taxes, but they also impose a sales tax on gasoline. Since the price of gas has doubled, it stands to reason that the governmetn is making 100% more money on their sales tax per gallon.

How about cutting the sales tax in half for a while? At 5%, that would reduce the price by 7.5 cents per gallon, give or take.

How about an in income tax deduction on the cost of gasoline......
Both good ideas... sure would boost Bush's approval ratings.... LOL
Not only are we taxed to death in MI, the word from Lansing is sales tax may go from 6% to 8% Maybe we should form a sheepie government and we can tax the non-sheepie owners
North Carolina's governor has introduced legistlation to reduce our gas tax for a while.
Of course, this comes after having just raised it, again, a few months ago.
We pay a little over $.30 per gallon in state tax.
We pay 7% sales tax and then on top of that an 8% goods and services tax....
My state is talking about temporarily getting rid of the state gas tax here in MN through th summer, while gas prices are (supoosed to be the) highest. I'm all for it! That would take about 25 cents off the price of gas per gallon.
I'm not in favor of removing gas taxes; we need to pay for roads and bridges.

What I am suggesting is that legislators stop attacking businesses for making a profit when government is reaping windfall sales taxes due to the high price of gas.

Remember, the oil companies' frofits are not just because the price of gas is high, they are mostly because they own the oil in the ground and the price per barrel is high. They found that oil at say, $30 a barrel and owned it when the price was $10 a barrel and now the price is $70 a barrel. The fact that the price of oil they already have has gone to $70 is why they have a "windfall" profit.

I didn't see a huge cry for a tax cut from the government when the price was $10 a barrel.
MN has a big secret squirrel hidden tax reserve emergency fund thingy, that they're gonna be pulling the needed monies from, instead of the gas tax. Our highway systems are very, very well funded- no worries there  . We're also one of the most highly sales taxed states too, I think. If they want to take away the gas tax for the summer, that is ok by me.

I also think the oil companies need to be a bit more responsible with their pricing systems... and we need to get off our butts and make alternative fuel systems more widely available! I want to buy a hybrid car- but I can't afford one right now... and I live in corn country- where's the ethanol? Brazil uses a ton of pure ethanol, and they get better gas mileage down there on that, then on regular petroleum gasoline!!!!
