My worry is that he never seems to want to drink when he's panting or obviously warm (after playing, etc.) He has constant access to cool fresh water in at least 3 places in the house and outside. He is drinking, but not at the times when I'd think he'd want to. He seems to respond when I dribble my fingers in the water to mimic the sound he makes - but even then, he only has a few sips and then lays dow (still panting and breathing shallow-ly). Has anyone had this experience, or any tricks? Maybe he's just fickle, but I want to make sure he's hydrated. |

I have one that does not have its face out of the water bowl the other hardly drinks at all.
In summer with the one that does not drink alot I get worried too, but she seems OK and we have hot summers here. I suppose they are all different in how much fluid they want |
Here in Louisiana it gets very very hot during the summer. (We have already been running our AC for several months now.) I have one that drinks constantly and another that will drink less often but consumes more when he does. They sleep a lot during the day but in the evening hours when it gets cooler they get rowdy and wild.
As long as there is fresh water around for him, I wouldn't worry. If he ever becomes completely lethargic. Then off to a vet. |
I am sure Walter will drink when he needs it, but I understand the worry. When Izzie isn't drinking water when I think she should I usually give her a couple ice cubes. It eases my worry, and she thinks its a treat. In fact, she comes running everytime the freezer is opened

Barney will be the same...he'll be all hot from a walk or playing and we'll bring him back inside and he will just sit and pant on the tile floor (right next to the water bowl). He might take a few licks, but usually waits til he cools down. I think it might be similar to when you work out really hard sometimes you don't want to drink right away as it makes you feel sick, but waiting a little while is better... |
