But now I know she is chewing it. She has a very scissor-like bite, and she seems to be putting it to use. The small, easily hidden patch, is now bigger She has no skin irritations that I can see, no fleas, no mats... I can't figure out why she chews it. I also want to know if anyone has used bitter apple on a dog that chews itself, and if so, did it work? Also, because she is a showdog, I can't put anything on that white leg coat that will stain it... does bitter apple stain? I just can't believe she did this 3 weeks before her next show I don't think I can hide the patch now. |

Panda! That's not the way to be a beauty queen!
I've used Bitter Apple on Barney's paws because he chews on them like a madman. It didn't really work for him. I would spray and he would give me a look like, what are you doing! And then he would move across the room away from me and within a few minute he was chewing again. This is the only thing he chews, so I don't know if the lure of chewing on himself is greater than the bad taste, or if it just doesn't work for him. His paws are already pink from chewing, but as far as I could tell there was no staining from the bitter apple. |
Thanks for your reply....
I bought the bitter apple and sprayed it on.... I have no idea if it will help or not since I never actually catch her doing it. I'm going to try putting socks on her too, I tried that already and she took them off, but I'm going to try a smaller pair and hope they stay on better. She has not chewed to the skin, she has left between a half inch to an inch of coat on her chewed spots, but it is so choppy and stands out big time on a dog with 8-10 inches of coat! It's no little spot either, she has chewed an area about 5 inches by 3 inches on one leg, and the other leg it's about 3 inches by 2 inches. I just can't believe she did this |
Pepsi chews the fur on his front paws when his coat is long.
I think he is protesting a full coat. As soon as I shave him down....no more chewing. Obviously, that is not an option for Panda though. |
oh gawd... |
Stacey , Cinde does this on her front paws too. Same as Elissa said I had her shaved down and no more chewing. |
Jack also chewed his longer coat. He likes his short curly hair.....darn if he doesn't curl like a poodle. |
OH DEAR
Stacey the bitter apple never worked for me when brie sucked her paw red raw. Very hard when trying to have coat and they do this. Maybe try washing the area in some oatmeal based shampoo to allieviate the irritation on the spots she has been chewing? Have you had any change in food at all or any new product you are using in her coat when grooming her or preparing her for the showring? Sometimes that can cause a bit of a reaction too. |

That's the thing, there is no irritation.... no redness, no dryness, she is not even chewing to the skin, just hacking it up enough to look horrible. We're thinking now maybe it is just a bad habit... I've noticed little chunks or oddly shorter peices all along... but I never caught her doing it. Now though, it is a HUGELY noticeable thing. She's been chewing various spots on all four legs, also she has managed to chew some of the coat around her mouth (probably while chewing other areas) she also chewed a hunk out of her back thigh, outside, show side. That *was* the worst spot, until this. I'm just going to have to keep this poor dog in socks pretty much all the time. Now that I am looking for it, I am catching her sneaking a quick nibble... If she starts chewing other areas of her body because she can't get to her legs then I guess she'll be wearing a full body suit til she gets her darn championship. |
It does sound like a bad habit Socks yes but you do have the problem of her maybe going at another area if it is a bad habit.
Try also spraying the bitter apple onto the outside of the socks when you put them onto her and maybe that might stop her from taking them off. Very hard when they start things like this, it is a matter of breaking the habit and turning her attention to other things rather then the chewing. Try also putting a stuffed kong in with her to keep her mind on that to chew rather then herself. I would still try the oatmeal shampoo on those chew spots as a precaution. |
Maybe she has an upset tummy, sort of like when they eat grass.
Looking for a quick fix shot-in-the-dark, maybe add some Tums and some fiber to her diet... |
I just wanted to say Mr. J has sprayed it on Yuki before. We've never notice her chewing on herself afterwards. Anything involving bitter apple ...the end result is her not doing/avoiding it.
I hope you figure out what's irritating Panda |
Lucy has allergies and will chew until she bleeds if I don't intervene. For her, I got some of the vet bandage (the stuff that sticks to itself and not the fur) and wrapped her itchy areas to keep her from chewing until the steroids kicked in. It seemed to help deter her from making a mess of herself |
Here is a pic of Panda's worst chewed leg
And here is a pic of her in her new socks before bed (she is sticking her tongue out at me just a little bit LOL) |
Why did you put me in this mom? |
Oh no!! Panda!!
There is also a gel product called YUK that is supposed to have the same effect. You might try it as an alternative to bitter apple if that doesn't work. |
Wow that is very noticeable.
I hope the socks helps. They look very cute on her. |
I'm sorry, Stacey, but that photo made me laugh (the one with the paw with the hack job)...it reminded me of a little kid who cut her own (or her brother's) hair!
Maybe try a long sleeve tshirt... |
I like the socks...what is on them???? sheepies? |
Darcy wrote: I like the socks...what is on them???? sheepies?
No I think they're supposed to be snowflakes... Of course DARCY would notice that. |
OH NO!!! THAT DOES LOOK JUST AWFUL STACE! I'M SO SORRY... NUAGHTY, NAUGHTY PANDA! |
Wowza that is quite a Chunk out there
The socks look trendy though, did she keep them on this time? At least it is right down low on the foot area, better there then halfway up the leg coat, STOP CHEWING PANDA or you'll be in big trouble |
She's not stopping. It seems the more I do to prevent her from chewing the more she tries to. She is keeping the socks on, but they also make a mess of her coat.
When her legs are covered she finds another area to nibble at. |
Have you tried anything to ease her tummy yet? |
Stacey how old is Panda now? Do you think she might be due for her first heat? Just a thought there with her obsession with chewing herself at the moment. Hormones from Hell |
She is 9 months now and yes it is entirely possible that she may be coming into heat soon, though I don't see any signs of it yet....
I've been keeping this dog so busy today, she is wiped out. LOL It doesn't seem to help though... She's fine for a while and then next thing I know I look at her and she's chewing on something. I actually think it's me noticing it more because I know now that she has been doing this. She has probably done it all her life... who knows.... I just need to break the habit. I think toys, toys, toys, and the bitter apple spray are the way to go for now. However, bitter apple does not retain any effect for long so my biggest concern is when I am at work and can't be here to re apply it or catch her chewing. |
Ron wrote: Have you tried anything to ease her tummy yet?
I thought your idea of a tummy upset was great at first Ron, and then I remembered this is not a sudden thing. She has been doing it a long time, long before I got her... I just didn't know it was her. The hacked up legs have been her all along, even though we thought it was done by her previous owners, or their kids, or their dogs.... but nope, it's all Panda.... This is a well established habit, which she has not been indulging in much since I have had her, I noticed the odd new patch of chewed fur here and there but I just kept thinking it was there all along and that I must have missed it somehow. This time it was so noticeable there was no mistaking that it was new.... This I think will be a lot harder to break her of than if it was a brand new thing that I could find a reason for.... |
The product Tammy mentioned "YUK" might be a good one to try, looks better then the bitter apple, available at Petsmart.
I had the same problem with the bitter apple, all of 5 mintues and back again on the same area, just does not last to repell them from that area. Hope you get on top of it |
put her in a long sleeve tshirt and then the socks, and then sock on her back legs...and then take a picture! |
and don't forget the boxer briefs! |
The poor girl is so hot with so much coat and then socks too as it is...
I really hope the bitter apple can do it, just long enough to break the habit. I've also been encouraging her to chew stuffed animals, someone suggested give her tons of them until she really seems to bond with one... some dogs suck their teddy bears, or blankets, like Dancer, and Panda chews fur, so I want to get her to focus on something else.... |
I think it will pass. Don't fret, the hair will grow back. |
