You could move her out to another room - she may still whine - but it won't last long. Just don't give in - or you'll be doomed! If she knows you'll give in and allow her to get into your bed - she'll never go back to the crate!
One of the things you may want to try - which worked great with my two when they were crated - put a dark sheet over the crate - it encloses them and they feel more secure. You'd be suprised at how well they sleep! She may stop getting up in the middle of the night too - especially if she can't see you when she does wake up - she may just go right back to sleep. It may take a little while for her to settle down - but the wait will be worth it. Sharing your bed with her now may not be an issue - but just wait until she's 75lbs and wants the pillows! The "pack" issue is a real one with sheepies! You want to try and avoid her sleeping in your bed while you're training her. Good Luck! Kristen |
Thanks for the advice. We have decided to invest in a larger crate and be more persistent when she does not want to go back to bed. She is only crated at night. |
Pisco has never been crated...he has always slept under my bed....but sometimes we do let him on the bed...but he knows it`s only when allowed!....if he wants to be on the bed he asks for permition (he has this weining/bark to let us know) ....what he does do is come out of under the bed in the morning...licks my face aka: hello mom then goes straight to the back patio does his stuff and come running back and jumps on the bed and cuddles with me for a bit...but knows when I say no it`s no. |
When my pup was younger I actually got on the floor and slept next to his crate so he could see me. Spoke softly to him when he wimpered, occasionally put my hand up so he could smell, and he soon would fall asleep. Had to do this for about two weeks (or a little less). made for some sleepless nights for me, but it does soon gets better.
Once he was too big for his small crate, I bought a bigger crate and he hated it. Found out he liked the "cave like" feel of his old plastic crate over the wire crate, so I did what Kristen had suggested. Covered the crate with a sheet (except the front door) and he was fine. Be careful with getting a crate that is too big. On the house training topic, if they have too much room, they will go the bathroom in one section of the crate and sleep in another. Perfect solution is getting a crate he/she can grow into while getting a divider that can move as your puppy gets bigger. |
I have a crate, and it is kept in the kitchen but I haven't actually used it for Dancer yet. That may have been a mistake, but we'll see... I did crate train my first oes and she housetrained no problem. Dancer on the other hand, things just happened differently. I brought her home at only 7 weeks, and from the very first night I allowed her to sleep in my bed wiht my husband and I. She has never, ever, had any accidents in our bedroom and always holds it all night and wakes me up at exactly 7am every day. I take her straight outside to do her business. At first she was always in the bed, but she is a pillow hog so I have been encouraging her to sleep on the floor with her own blanket (a crib size comforter) right beside me but on the floor. She would prefer the bed I think, but I only have to say No, on the floor, and then praise her and pet her for a minute or so and she's fine. Every dog is different.... my first oes wouldn't have held it all night, she would have peed on the floor and chewed whatever she could find, but Dancer just seems to know that the bedroom is 'the den' and wants to keep it clean. Any other floor is fair game though if I don't take her out fast enough...lol.... |
Vero, That is great Pisco goes straight out to your back patio every morning. How long did it take you to train him to do that? Do you have a doggie door? |
I never actually trained him to do it....he sort of figured it out that he can`t climb on the bed unless he has peed...I did showed him twice that before been let on the bed he should pee...and he`s doing this since he was 4 months.no I don`t have a doggie door, I have a small enclosed patio behind the kitchen that I always leave open, and I taught him that if he needs to go at night to go there, but he usually holds it all night but got the habbit of going there in the morning..... |
Oh y'all do make me laugh! I'm worse than most. The first night Woof came to stay we had set up a separate room to be Woof's den - complete with toys, a dog bed and a blanket which our breeder kindly gave us which had had Woof's mum laying on it so he had something that smelled familliar.
I still spent the first night SLEEPING IN THE ROOM WITH HIM, as he wouldn't stop crying. Oh, by the way, the room is about 4 foot square and I'm 6 foot 3..... |
I also spent Phoebe's first night sleeping with her (Is this a UK sad act trait?). We had a crate set up in our kitchen but she was so unhappy I moved her to our girls playroom and slept on the sofa to keep her company. From that night on to 6 months she slept in her crate without complaint. Her crate is now set up as a sanctuary for when our children are running riot. Now at night she sleeps either in or out as she pleases. Move her out of your room, crate her and be prepared for a couple of night whining and barking. Don't give in.. be calm and consistent.. all best Phoebe, parents and sisters. |
haha hilarious, i can totally picture it
