From what I understand from my expert sheepdog sources, diarrhea is fairly common with sheepdogs. From what I understand from my vet, diarrhea is fairly common in a lot of dogs.
When our dog gets sick this way, we have treated him by ensuring he gets plenty of water to drink, and with i/d dog food (available through your vet). If your dog continues to have this problem, say for longer than 2 days, bring him to the vet. The cause can be a number of things, including "bacterial overgrowth", whatever that is. That's treated by antibiotics. In the meantime, Immodium works well for dogs, just as it does for people. In my opinion, use the tablets, as the liquid tastes putrid and may be difficult to get the dog to take. For an adult large sheepdog, the adult dose of Immodium is fine. I don't know what the proper dosage is for a puppy. If it were my puppy, I'd either talk to the vet (likely), or administer the children's dose of Immodium on my own. I believe the children's dose is 1/2 of the adult dose, but I'm not sure. Good luck with your problem! If you have any questions or feel the need for reassurance, feel free to post back here, or to call on any of the resources that you may have found here. Rescue people are usually VERY willing to help! -Ron. |
