Ohhhh Nooooo!
Did you bring her to the vet? I have heard of this very rare condition -- malopecia foollitis -- it is said to only affect 1 in a million Sheepdogs. It's genetic, and is apparently passed down in the family. It may have to do with the herding instinct. |
You had me for a second! Actually, this happened to my sheepie, Presley (for real!). When she was 5 months or so - all of her hair feel out by the root (not like your typical "blowing puppy coat") - all of it gone! - looked like she had been shaved - and the fur growing in underneath was silver (like an adult). She looked like she had that aging disease - it was scary! That called for an immediate trip to the Vet - who had never seen anything like it before. Very strange!
Happy April Fools Day Abbi!!! |
I was worried for a second. LOL You got us good! I am glad that she is really doing good and looks like loving being free from hair! If only I could shave my hair off and look as pretty! HA HA. Thanks for the laugh. Stormi and co. (Jack and Annabelle are wondering if they can have a cool summer hair doo like Abbi's!) |
It is not for the faint of heart ....it took me 2-3 days to get over the fact that all of her soft ,wispy hair was gone. But it takes all of 5-10 minutes to groom her now ...yes you still have to keep the ears mat free.
It took Abbi all of 5 minutes to find that she loves being without hair .... as I have already mentioned somewhere, she picked up lots of energy and has even incresed her appetite despite the rising temperatures down here. She even WANTS to sit out in the front or back during the day now. Ron, malopecia foolitis, love it!! Sort of sounds like that compulsive disorder where the person pulls out their hair ..... so I guess yours stands for a compulsive habit of picking on fools right? Kristen, hair loss like that can be caused by: an allergy, extreme stress, or a nutritional imbalance which causes hormones to go awry. Besides a treatment with predisone or antihistamines, usually you have to let it run its course. Happenned to a lab I used to own, Baby. Of course I had it checked for mange and mites, but the vet never did figure out what caused it exactly. Baby's hair all grew back though. I guess that is what happened with Presley? It is/was beautiful down here .... 80's during the day and 50's during the night. Clear, claro, clear! Gotta go water..... . Hope everyone is having such a good spring! |

Yes, Presley's hair did grow back eventually - she looked like a patient going through chemo for a while - but now has a beautiful full coat! She grew back with her adult color though - so she was never that black fluffy sheepie puppy everyone expected. We never determined the cause - it could have been anyone of the things you mentioned - she had a tough start in life - so it very well could have been stress related. We also had her thyroid checked at the time because we had just learned that one of her littermates had serious health issues including a thyroid disorder. Thankfully - she was fine! Just a little goofy looking. |
I have pictures of Presley furless as a puppy if anyone is interested - email me at TTKristen@aol.com. It's quite a sight to see...

I was in for a bit...then realized what it was.....had a lot of laughs here...
Hairless pups....it remind me of the Perro Peruano, a breed that originally was owned by the Incas and they have NO HAIR AT ALL!! but are very warm ...so the Incas used them as bed warmers in the winter....I will try to find a pic so you guys can see them...they range from black, brown and light brown with spots, very thin (galgo look) with pointy ears... |
