Well Pippin sleeps with us in bed, sorta. He'll hop up and down off the bed throughout the night. but I've been noticing that before he really falls asleep he seems uncomfortable and hot- there's a lot of panting. We don't have any kind of air conditioning (our house has no central heating ducts, and is 125 years old) but it isn't super hot in MN yet. Highs are in the high 60s and low 70s. Is his panting a warmth issue, and how can I help him be more comfortable? His puppy coat is now at about 2" long. |

My parent's dog usually starts off in bed with them and then she spends much of her night on the cool tiles of the bathroom. I think as long as Pip has a cool place to go, he'll be fine... |
Annie typically falls asleep on the carpet outside of our bedroom. However, we sometimes hear her move to the tiled bathroom. She actually fell asleep there last night as the temp was a little higher than it has been. Probably similar to yours in MN. I think they usually know when they are warm and go to a cooler spot. Kind of like how they find some shade outside on a warm day. |
Clyde sleeps in front of the fan that I have going next to the bed. His haircut came at a good time because Bear likes to sleep on the tiled bathroom floor where Clyde slept with his long hair. Everyone has their own little spot now. Lucy sleeps downstairs by herself, just the way she likes it.
They're pretty smart about knowing how to cool down. Clyde will lie in bed with me if I'm reading or something but when it's lights out, he jumps right off because he knows it's way too warm for him. At this time of year, they're all happy on the floor. |
Bosley has been up on the bed more often since his trim, but he does move to he bathroom tiles by midnite, and stays there for the rest of the nite. He pants a lot.
Dixie is a cuddler, and sometimes stays on the bed all night. Hardly pants. But is does seem that they can feel and then react to a slight rise in temperature much more than us. They have already started to lay in the cool grass out side, instead of always running and playing. And it is still a bit cool, here. |
Pepsi shakes the whole couch when he is up there panting.
Usually after playing with Rags. He and Rags both sleep on the floor at night. They usually only pant for a couple of minutes....until they cool down. Harley never had the luxury of having short hair. So he was always panting. He would go back and forth between the walk in shower and the side of the bed. Now that both of mine have short hair they seem to be sleeping on their back with their tummys up in the air to catch the breeze from the ceiling fan.... lol |
i think it is coz the temps are new to him
einy, last summer (it doesn't get that hot in the uk ) when he was just a little pup he would bark to go outside at silly times of the morning and then just lay on the patio and sleep. we would literally have to haul his fluffyness back in the house it was dark out!!! we ended up putting our portable air conditioner on all night one upstairs for us and the baby, one downstairs for the dog zoe and einy |
Thanks guys. I was worried about him constantly getting down on the floor, but it seems like he's just looking for a cooler spot to be... It's funny, because he'll be in bed with me no problem until Mike comes in around midnight, then he usually prefers to sleep on the floor... Too much people body heat, not enough room maybe? Of course, he ALSO like to sleep on the pillow above Mike's head... It is SO cute! I'll have to get a picture of it sometime. I've noticed that he prefers to be in contact with one of us when he's sleeping, either next to or on top of a foot, leg, hand, arm whatever.
I'm still a little worried about him for summer... hopefully we'll be able to get a window air conditioner unit, for his sake, and mine! |
