We rescued her from a shelter about a year ago. She was approx. 5 months old then. We don't know anything about the beginning of her little life. She's very sweet, but every now and them, we see "ghosts" pop out of her. IE: Once Tony raised his foot to block an open door, and she went into a panic. We assumed someone must have kicked her. In the past few months, she has gotten very timid. When we go out, she hides behind me. She is very afraid of the neighborhood children (who adore her and Pirate). Again, this is something new. She and Pirate are wild together, and in the house she is very happy. But around strangers, she appears very frightened. She just had a complete check up at the vet, and everything checked out perfect. At first she was scared there, but they were gentle, and she did warm up...a little. Any ideas where this new attitude has come from? Any suggestions how to get her past this? Thanks |

I don't know about Border Collies, but we had a great thread going (pre-crash) about building confidence in dogs. We came to the conclusion that making your dog feel "useful" is a great way to build confidence. I got my Walter (6mo.) a backback to carry with us on walks, and he behaves like a completely new dog. He's on a mission, and it shows. He's got a task to complete, and becomes very confident because he has something to do. Walks more calmy, less distracted, etc.
http://www.activek9.com/dog-backpacks.html The other thing that was suggested to me was hide and seek, and more "mental" games, allowing the dog to fulfill his/her need to build the strength of his mind. Toss a toy the other way and then run and hide - allow the dog to come find you, etc. Again, I watched, quite amazed as Walter figured out different ways of finding me (nose, eyes ears, etc). After we played a bit, he even remembered to check all of the previous places I'd hidden! Good luck - let us know how it goes. |
