We, Chris(my fiance) and I rescued Koda from our local animal shelter soon after christmas. We knew we wanted another pup and a playmate from our other dog Penny. Abilene has about 6 different rescue places so we visited each and on the 3rd stop we met Koda. This 50lb chocolate lab pup staring out at us, not barking or whinning. Just looking like i want you to get me outta here. We decided to kepp looking as the attendant told us there were 4 other people infront of us. Try as we might we just coudn't get him out of our heads. We went back an put our name on th elist, which we were now 6th. we got to talking to the lady and she said that her grandfather raises Cheasepeak Bay Retrievers and that "Koda" wasn't a full lab but a mox, b/c he had webbed feet, yellow eyes and his coat was kinda brawny. We didn't care , we communicated how much we wanted him. And lo and behold she called us a few days later telling us that eveybody had changed their minds or didn't respond. So we went and picked him up. He didn't leave my lap for the rest of the day. We had to get Penny and Koda used toeach other, as expected Koda had some food aggression that we quickly showed him wasn't necessary, he would get plenty of food. The shelter gave us a coupon to get him fixed, so we did the next day and when we went a week later to get the stiches out he was a perfect gentleman just layed down in my lap and fell asleep, he had gain 10 lbs in that fist week. He evantually went from 50lbs to 110lbs!!! We called him Koda b/c he look like a Kodiac bear. Tha's why i called him my Koda Bear. He was happiest "laying" in yourlap as you rubbed the strip of hair that grew in reverse down his nose. He had a mind of his own as was a bit of a jelly bean with his sister but none th eless they were best buds. It was dusk, the hot day had cooled down to extremely pleasant. Eveybody was outside barbqueing and Koda had just jumped up onto the trampoline so he could smell the grill better. I called him over and layed down at my feet. I laughed at him and he just looked up at me and smiled. Chris came over and rubbed him, and said, "How's my boy, aren't you so glad we found you!!!" Koda licked him and snuggled back down. The food was ready so i got up to help bring it in, inthe process i tripped over Koda. I turned around and called him a goofball, rubbbed his face and siad, " Momma loves you bear." Not five minutes later he was hit, and gone from us forever. We buried him and i know for sure that dogs do greive. Penny hasn;t been the same since. As soon as we let he out she runs over to where he is buried and lays on his grave. We planed some wildflowers over it. We will always remember you!!! Shannon |
