I had written a huge rant yesterday about our vet and how Gucci hadn't had a seizure since the initial two...THEN GUESS WHAT HAPPENED LAST NITE? That's right, the poor Gooch had one that lasted about 2 minutes! I knew I should have knocked on wood or something! Anyway, as it turns out I had my meds all wrong (the names I mean! The Gooch was getting the right ones prescribed!) So he has been on Potasium Bromide and Phenolbarbitrol. We had been working on weaning him off the Phenol. His last vet visit was to check his levels of Postasium Bromide as it takes a while...I guess. So now I wonder if we will have to raise his intake of Potasium Bromide or switch medication entirely...this is why I need the name again of Peanut's new wonder drug! As posted before the crash, I really am unhappy with our vet and am reluctant to even carry on with her, so I guess I want all the information to present to potential NEW vets to see if I get that blank face, when they realize they are not going to get as much money out of me as they could! This will also teach me to check the forum more often...as I was really looking forward to all your opinions as to what you would do in this situation! And I will say again how much I've missed you all....just in case you missed that message from me and The Muppets! |

I really hope Elissa can repost as much of that as possible too, I think it was one of the more important ones. (all were important of course, but that one I think is really a breakthrough)
Anyway, Colleen, the medicine is a homeopathic remedy, called Bacopin. A link to info about it is here http://www.bacopin.com/introduction.htm I have no idea about it's availability, but I would suggest looking for it in health food stores. As much as I think Bacopin looks very promising for dogs like Gucci, I would read up on it carefully, there are risks and possible side effects depending on dose (as with any med). I would talk to a vet first too, once you find one who listens to you, and that you trust. |
Thanks Stacey!!!! I was hoping for that website again! I want this info when I start my search for a vet! |
Colleen I had posted the name of a Holistic Vet in Ontario also.
I will try to get that info again. Peanut has been on Bacopin since April 20th. He did have one seizure last Monday after only being on it a couple of days.... I later found out that the sneak spit out one of his pills. No seizures since. Pheno can cause serious damage to the liver in long term use. Peanut has been off of the Pheno for three years now. All it did was make him dopey...he also had a dry nose like the Gooch. His weight went from 8 lbs to a very hefty 13 lbs. And he was drugged and out of it all the time. His seizures also increased for about once or twice a month to daily. I weaned him off it myself and the seizures went back to being pretty far apart. Over the past year his seizures had increased to almost daily. I did not want to put him on another drug. I met a woman at the dog park, we started talking and got on the subject of seizures. She told me she had started her Lab Mix on Bacopin 10 days earlier and no more seizures. So I went and bought a bottle....of course I was skeptical, but it works Peanut even seems a bit less psycho too. Bacopin should be available at any health food store. I also had written that I thought your vet jumped the gun with the medication. It took my Vet almost two years to put Peanut on the Pheno. I was told to monitor his seizures with a diary, frequency, what happened during the seizures, how long did they last...etc Being that Gucci only had had two I don't see why they started medication. Gucci's latest could have been a result of the medication, like Peanuts. So tomorrow will be a full week since he has had a seizure.... HURRAY! If you do a internet search on Bacopin it will bring up lots of places where you can buy it. |
Thanks a million for reposting Elissa!!!!
Here I go searching!!! |
I am very happy to report that it has been a week and a half since the last seizure |
That's great! Can you remind us again how often the seizuers were before and if there were any seizures on the phenobarbitol? |
Ron,
Peanut was recently having seizures on almost a daily basis. When I first put Peanut on Phenobarbitol it was three years ago, he was having seizures maybe twice a month. His seizures increased on the Phenobarb from twice a month to a couple a day. Realising that it wasn't helping him....even after increasing the dosage a few times I decided it was time to take him off. He gained 5 lbs from the Phenobarbitol going from 8lbs to 13 lbs. He was on it for 6 months. As soon as I stopped the Pheno the seizures got further and further apart....until he was back to one every couple of weeks. |
