Typical puppy or copy cat?

This isn't a problem, but has me curious, and as I've never had a puppy, I'm gonna ask everybody else.

Pippin tries SO HARD to play with the cats, but the most he ever gets from them is a hiss and a smack on the head with an outstretched paw. He'll go up to one of them, ask to play (bum up in the air, hinder going a million miles an hour) approach the cat and then he gets the hissand smack on the head. (Sometimes with claws sometimes without). Then he does it again. and again.

Ok, no problem, the girls can always run away if they want to, but here's where I'm getting curious...

Sometimes after getting smacked on the top of the head by one of the cats he'll carefully try to extend HIS paw in the same manner and touch them gently in return. He never quite makes it, but is this typical puppy behavior, or is he copying the cats behavior, thinking that this must be how we play with kitties???

Like I said it isn't a problem at all, but his paw movement is so similar to what he sees the cats doing, I couldn't help but ask!

Fozzie did the same thing with the neighbor pup, Romy, the other day. Foz would nip at him, Romy would back off, then Foz lightly touched him with his paw. Maybe just puppy thing???
Clyde has always been a swatter but I've never seen a dog use his paws as much as Bear. Bear hits everything-- objects, people, Clyde, Lucy-- it's definitely normal puppy behavior for us. We don't even have cats that they could copy.
Maybe there is some boxer in the OES bloodlines! lol
Murphy does this all the time.. if he wants your attention.. wack!!!! if he wants to play.. wack!! It must be a sheepie thing because little sassy Sadie does the exact same thing.. monkey see.. monkey do.

It's to funny to see the both of them.. sitting in front of each other paws wacking each other...
I think it must be a sheepie thing. Both my dogs have always done it.
They smack each other on the head and it looks exactly like a cat swat.
Made "shake" a real breeze to teach because they do it to us for
attention, often.

Bosley will paw at you or other dogs, but Dixie PUNCHES you. It is so funny. My son and I always laugh because of the way she beats on us with those big paws of hers....and quick! Like a one-two and she runs away...
Prissy also uses her paws in this way - it is so cute to see her reach out and extend her paw to me when she's laying down. She'll batt it up and down a few times and extend it as far as it goes. :D She definitely wants to play. I believe she only ever does this with her left front paw. Intersting. . .
Louie does this with his paws, too! Must be a sheepie thing. (Although, I bruise very easily and Louie doesn't know his own strength! The questions I sometimes get...  )

I don't know but Maggie does the same thing. She is always trying to reach out and paw Miles. Then she grumbles when he shrinks away and doesnt play. 8O
Aww... hre I thought I just had a really observant puppy

Don't you just love those sheepie antics??? :hearts:
