Technically, the standard says that brown on a sheepdog is highly objectionable. People do not breed dogs to have brown on them and if they have dogs with brown coats they can be excused from shows. So if someone is breeding for brown OES that is against what they should be doing and who knows what kind of health problems they might be letting slide by.
Maybe your husband is thinking of a Bearded Collie? They come in brown and white. Maybe he saw a mixed dog that looked exactly like an oes except for coat color? Not sure.... |
My neighbors had a purebred OES from a pretty well known breeder, he was brown and white. I don't think there's a connection but he had to be put down since he was a vicious dog, they couldn't control him at all. |

do i need to tell you how arian and elitist that sounds? just curious. technically, jack's blue eyes are objectionable, i think they are damn cute. and he's healthy as a horse. if you listen to strict breed standards and high and mighty showdog requirements you'll spend a lifetime searching for the perfect pet rather than playing with it. |
Blue eyes are not objectionable at all. Blue or brown or one of each is fine. Amber eyes are objectionable. |

and probly cute as hell, but what does that matter if the breed standard is to be blue or brown |
I don't think Mandy was trying to make an argument for or against the standard. She was making a point that since brown and white isn't the standard, most reputable breeders wouldn't be breeding for those colors so they'd be harder to find. Breeders that aren't breeding for the standard may not be as careful on health issues either. |
Thanks for the replys , sorry if i caused a debate!!! I didnt mean sheepies as in breed for a specific colour but a sheepie that is from a litter thats a unusal colour from the rest!!!! if that makes sense!!! thats just a family pet!!!
ie , all grey , all white , brown , odd markings... |

Fozzie appears to have black birthmarks on te left side of his nose and eye. Also has a mark on one of his paw pads. That makes him stand out from all the rest! Annie has blue eyes, and Foz has birthmarks! |

Well, Louie has odd markings (I guess this is what you mean by that...?). (This is an old pic, but it shows clearly) He was the only one in his litter that looked different. |
Ed wrote: do i need to tell you how arian and elitist that sounds? just curious. Maybe it sounds elitist but it is what it is. The "standard" is what ethical OES breeders strive for. Just think if each OES breeder deviated from the standard however they wanted. Then we wouldn't really have sheepdogs anymore, would we? |
Hi,
This was Merlin's marking as a baby..much more noticable when he had his black/white puppy coat. Now that the black has changed to light grey the "oppositeness" (if there is such a word )of his coat is not as apparent. Sigh I miss that little striped nose too...urg! why do they have to grow up!! Sniff and that little froggie pose...(reminds self not to even think about more puppies.) The one shown in my avatar is another one of my boys and not Merlin. Marianne and the boys |
Aww louie's marking make him stand out from a crowd!!!
And Merlin was such a cutie as a baby!!! |
Jack is marked like Louie! You guys really are going to make me take a picture other than the frontal shot. |
Oh please do!!!! |
I had an amazing reddy brown border x Shetland collie. Although the shetland in him didn't make him at all small! He was a failed sheepie from a farmer that hated him but he made the worlds best pet! So there you go- brown and white sheepies are possible!
Sadly my dog died a couple of months ago. |
Sorry for your loss... Sounds like he was a keeper. |
my boy derby is all whtie with a tail -mixed but has one black spot right on his butt |
Sofa has a blue eye and a brown one. She's a doormat and sleeps most of the day, unless I come home from work, then she's totally crazy greeting me. We think it explains the sleepy sofa / crazy sofa split personality.
Her coat is silver-blue, and if we let it grow too much it starts turning reddish-brown from the roots... why would that be? The strangest OES we've seen was a couple of fully grown adults that had a black coat rather than gray... they looked like mini panda bears! |
Clyde is almost 3 and really has not lightened up as much as a lot of the other dogs his age. He's more of a deep charcoal gray rather than silver or regular gray. He's a bit lighter at the roots but even then, not super light. He's still pretty panda looking!
<-- You can see the lightest part on his muzzle there but he's that deeper blue-gray the rest of the way throughout. He still has some bleached baby hair on the ends too that's a little reddish from the sun. |
