Good Luck with Drake! |
Make sure Drake is getting the right message. Whenever you let him out and he goes outside say some phrase you wouldn't mind repeating every time he goes outside. Like: "Good job!"
That way he knows what you want him to do when you go outside to potty ... of course it will take a while for it to sink in. But since you are already actively going out with him why not train him to do it on command . It will come in handy on trips and during bad weather. Good Luck and try to enjoy Drake in with a daily walk or playing fetch or something with him too. You want to interact with him in positive ways as much as possible at this stage of his life. I am so glad you found a compromise and are taking steps at enjoying your dog, instead of loathing him . It always makes things easier. |
Agingright you are right about sending Drake the right message. I think I really confused the poor boy by take him out to much and not letting Drake know what is expected of him when we went out. Drake is in and out so much that the house is really no different the the yard and I am now in the process of correcting my mistake. You are also right about the weather, today it stormed and set things back a little. Thanks for the support! I figure if I could potty train my four kids, two of which I thought were going to go to Kindergarden in diapers I can handle Drake. I will keep ya posted on how things go |
That's the spirit! Persistence and sweat usually win the day! I guess the sweat invovled here is mopping and walking .
But you are on your way! Give Drake a big hug, after you make him sit of course. The only reason we make it through potty training with some of our kids is because we love them .... the same is going to hold true for Drake. Gotta luv him! |
Intradan, I believe our puppies are around the same age. Jules is 10 weeks. She was born Jan 19th. The last couple of days we hit a milestone. We think she is going on demand. Our beloved older dog Jenny has always gone on demand to the word "bathroom". Well we have been using this same word with her every time we take her out (every hour during the day) and once in the middle of the night. She responds every time. We praise her and usually bring her back in. She has had accidents in the house, but they are less and less frequent. |
Just thought I would let you know that things are improving since my last post. Drake is now going outside most of the time but he loves to give our carpet in the family room where we spend most of the time little sprinkles (can anyone help me with that). He does not go in the rest of the house but he will go just a little bit on the carpet ever once in a while even when I know he should not have to go. Do you think what I clean the carpet with could be giving Drake the urge or that he may be remarking his territory? Anything would help. Thanks |

Don't know if my experience will help but, I'll give it a go. Both my girls were excellent about asking to go out. I did notice that if Rosie visited a house where there had been other dogs, she would totally embarrass her mom and do a quick piddle on my friends rug. They had previously had elderly dogs who had trouble holding things at the end and even after cleaning, I believe the scent was still there and she marked the territory. I always found at home if i cleaned up with a bit of water mixed with some vinegar it seemed to work wonders and never had trouble. Toward the end when Rosie was having trouble not making it outside. I started to use Febreze to help and I noticed that even after she had just been out and relieved herself, she would come in and piddle right where I had Fabrezed. If I cleaned like the old way with the vinegar & water she didn't seem to do it. Don't know if this helps any, but it was my train of thought at the time and I stopped using the Febreze. For future reference, Rosie, my problem diva child that she was, also had one other fun thing she used to do. When I first got her she was a year old but I unfortunately had to go on a week long business trip each of the first two months I had her. I would leave her with my mom in Syracuse and I would call in and have Mom put her on the phone and I would tell her how much I missed her like I had with my last dog Odie. Shortly after the call she would head up to my old bedroom and when my Mom would go and check on her. She would be laying on my old bed and on the floor would be a nice big No. 2 for poor Grandma to clean up. I was asked by Mom after that not to converse with her when I was away anymore. Drake is such a darling, you sound like things are getting better. All these pups are just being pups and they'll get the hang of it all I'm sure. Good Luck ! |
Thanks for the advice, you might have solved my problem because I have been using Febreze on my carpet among a few other things. I will try the vinagar and water trick. Thanks |
Test that rug for colorfastness somewhere hidden, or on a piece of scrap first!!!
Also, Nature's Miracle works enzymatically to breakdown urine, but I have no experience with an inside-the-house-marking dog. |
Ron,
Good Catch Guy ! I always forget those little details. Ron is right check before you do use it on the rug somewhere not noticeable first. I had a brown rug and it never showed any discoloration. That was definitely an unprofessional opinion of mine on the Febreze, but I did see an immediate change. Good luck ! |
Hi,
Baily, who comes from the same litter as Drake, is a bit of a p.....er, too. She will be real good for a few days and then will just look right at you a let loose. Very frustrating as I KNOW she can hold it and often does. Sometimes I think that she is mad about something and this is payback. Baily spent a good part of yesterday in the crate for behavior unbecoming an OES. Maybe they are in their rebellious pre-teen phase! Baily is plenty smart and I'm sure Drake is as well. THey just need to have it reinforced as to what is acceptable and what is not. Good luck with him! |
Update on Drake. Drake is doing much better except for the carpet downstairs. I spent all weekend steam claening my carpets (which needed it before we got Drake but he sent them over the edge) and Drake sure enough did one of those I am just going to go even though I don't have to. He got sent up stairs and stayed there for the rest of the evening. Here is the funny thing, I was in the kitchen the night before fixing dinner and Drake came in and barked at me and did his I have to go dance, well I was right in the milddle of doing something and could not get away. He went back towards the door and came back to with a I am sorry but I could not help it look. I followed him and sure enough he had went poo. So I am perplexed at why Drake can not control himself on my carpet in the family room but can or trys in the rest of the house. Last night I made Drake sleep upstairs and he woke me a 3:00 am to go to the bathroom. By the way the upstairs where I keep Drake is lanolium. Sure has me puzzled. By the way Drake gave me that I am sorry I did not mean to look when My oldest son and Drake played a little to ruff and scratched my sons lip. Drake came running upstairs barked at me like I am sorry I am sorry I didn't mean to hurt him |
An alternative to water/vinegar is to wash down with a solution of water and biological washing powder. This should stop you four legged friend from using the same spot over again by breaking down fatty enzyme scent/ deposits from within the original movement. Keep at it and it will all work out fine...S, L & girls. |
