Worried about Pisco

Hi all....
Just wanted to share this with you guys....
I took Pisco today for a check up since I though he wasn`t gaining his proper weight he is 26kgs (57lbs)....and sure enough he is 5 kgs. (11 lbs) underweight (according to my vet)...the Vet did some exams and It seens he is still lacking a digestive ensyma he was lacking as a pup and that makes his stool soft and doesn`t alow him to nutrient enough....so the vet gave him to take more of the ensyma (a pill daily) and Weltons -a syrop that open the appetite usually given to kids and eldery (5 ml daily)...do any of you have any other suggestion to make him eat more?
thanks, vero.

Hello Vero and Pisco,

I just wrote all of this, but it disappeared. Anyway, I have an idea, but I don't know if it is good advice or not. If it isn't someone please let me know. Anyway, Jack and Annabelle love when we put peanut butter in their kongs. (it's a dog toy) Well, my husband decided that as a special treat he puts 2 table spoons of peanut butter in with their dog food and then he mixes it it in so that all the food is basted in peanut butter. Jack and Annabelle get so excited and will start butt wiggle dancing when they hear daddy fixing their favorite treat. Will Pisco eventually get the enzyme he needs to digest foods correctly? I hope so. Give Pisco and big hug for me. Stormi
When I needed to help Henry gain weight I took a Kong, peanut butter and a banana. I stuck half a banana in the opening of the Kong, "cemented" the banana in the hole with a generous amount of peanut butter and froze the whole thing. (In order not to waste the other half of the banana, I always made two.) Henry loves this treat and it takes him about 10 minutes to finish, which is 9-1/2 minutes longer than it takes him to eat anything else. Do be careful where you put this, Pisco will smear peanut butter on the floor.
Peanut butter.....heard a lot of you mention it but never tried it myself....I will and get back with you about it.....sorry but I think we don`t have kongs here....or maybe with a differnt name....could you describe it?
yes Stormi....we hope Pisco will eventually get his own ensymas working...but since he already had this problem as a pup my vet thinks that it`s a 50/50 chance he will develop then himself.....if not he will have to be on it for life (luckily it`s not very expensive) I also have to give him a slice of papaya (passion fruit) once a week..it also helps to built ensymas...but today he has eaten 4 cups (that a great improvement since if he eats at all it`s no more than 3 cups he on Pro plan)
Vero if you cannot get one. If you want to send me your address I have a private email on site I will send You one from uk. luv pepe

Vero, using a kong is a very good idea. Shanti doesn't eat a lot neither, so I bought one... well really isn't a kong, the hole is smaller, but I put inside of it food and Shanti spends a lot of time playing with his "toy" and eating.

In Buenos Aires “Porta” makes them. I don’t know if you have “Porta” in Lima.

thanks Ron for the Pic.....yes we do have then here...but with another name....
Do you know the ingredients of that weltons syrop? maybe i can find something similar here in canada to increase my pups appetite. She's growing, eating better, and doesn't feel so boney anymore, but I know she still doesn't eat enough, yesterday and the day before I had to really encourage her to finish one cup of kibble mixed with canned food, and this morning she wouldn't eat a crumb, but tonight she gobbled it up, the whole bowl. I still want to see if I can get her appetite more regular, as she still doesn't weigh as much as she should. About 20 lbs at almost 14 weeks.
Good luck with pisco, I would just keep trying everything until you come across something he really likes.
Pisco seems to like human food....so maybe I was thinking of mixing human food into his reg dog food....he does have rice added into his food because It helps his stomach work better.....
by the way...peanut butter is really hard to find here....not many people eat it and when I do find it`s very expensive (I used to find it in every supermarket in the US and Bolivia...but not here in Peru)....
Willowsprite....the syrup basically contains: vitamins- B1,B2;B3,B5,B6,B12
Ciproheptadina HCI and ferrus pirophosfato soluble...Pisco doesn`t like it very much so what I do is fill a 5ml seringe with it (that`s according to his weight) and drip it into his mouth....they do tend to drink more water than usual and it leaves them a bit drowsier than normal....according to my vet it`s normal.
well, that makes sense, I know B vitiamins do have a lot to do with metabolism and digestion etc.
Is it a known problem for oes to be lacking digestive enzymes? It's making me think I should have my vet look into that on our next visit, april 10th for her booster and rabies vaccine.
Hi Vero,
If I am not mistaken, your Pisco is the same age as my Merlin(just 1 year old) Merlin also weighs 57 pounds. And since the groomer SHAVED him  He looks really skinny. My vet said not to worry tho, Merlin is still narrow in the chest and my vet said as he gets older his chest will broaden and he will gain weight. Merlin's dad was 95 pounds. Merlin is not very interested in eating tho, we add cottage cheese now to Merlin's food to 'fatten' him up a bit. We cannot have peanut butter in our house as I have a daughter who is deathly allergic.
Hugs
thanks guys for all the support...
Carol as you might know here they don`t really "check up" dog very throughly....and not much blood sample as well....but the first time the vet hit right on target about the ensyma....I will try more fish and cod liver oil...about the tyroid problem there is no way I can have that check her :( they don`t do those test here....about calcium he does get his right amount in calcium tablets...but I can`t give him milk because it upsets his stomach more.
WizardMerlin.....is he really the same weight as Pisco?....it does give me a little peace to know that....my vet also told me Pisco will gain weight as he gets older but I`m afraid that since he is not eating very much he won`t do it propertly...I will try a second opinion on Pisco with another vet who is highly recomended (but I`m not very sure because he is this famous one here does all kind of talks and is invited to many TV shows but is rarely in office ...leave most of the work to interns).
Vero, I really can't give ant advice because I am so new at this game but I sure hope all works out with Pisco! I will be thinking about you and Pisco 8)

Yes Vero, My Merlin is small too. My hubby is NOT very happy about it, of course he still loves Merlin but we knew Merlin's parents were very large and were hoping on a larger dog(don't know why but this seems to be important to men here! LOL!) Anyway I think one of the reasons why my Merlin is not that big is Merlin's food is only 18% protein. Because of aggression issues it was suggested to me(by Grannie Annie of NEOESR) that I change Merlin's dog food that was 28% protein to a dog food that is only 18% protein. Now that he is neutered maybe I can raise the protein level in his food. (the only food that I could find here with 18% protein is costing me twice as much as the other dog food, I am paying $60 for a 30 pound bag! )
Hugs
Big Ben is only 62 pounds and will turn five next month. He has always been a great eater and you can feel some fat between his ribs - but not too much. When Ben is shaved he is very skinny looking but again, you can't see his ribs. So far he's been very healthy and our various vets have never been concerned, he's just "petite" in the OES world...if there is such a thing? While we thought he would end up to be in excess of 80 pounds he's been a big enough beast for our family! (Especially when he steps on toes.)
Thank you guys for all the support.....I just love him sooo much :)
WizardMerlin I think the "big" issue is also in my hubby`s mind...LOL he keeps saying Pisco is small....he calls him the little mop....but he loves him so much too.....
He is eating Pro plan that has 28% of proteins nad 18% fat....maybe if I change to one that has more fat maybe I can get a little weight on this furbaby.
what I do find strange is that Pisco is taller than Ruffus (OES friend) when you see them together but if you see them apart it seems that Pisco is smaller......Pisco is 66 1/2 cm tall (26 inches tall) right now.
I am going tomorrow to a second vet for a second opinion....I hope all goes well....
Vero, even more peace of mind... Last time I weighted Lennon he was 58 pounds and he's a year old. My wife insisted he's a little small, so took a tour around the OES we know in the city and guess what... He's small compared to other adult OES :? the vet said that he may grow taller this year and will get more buff, but I don't really care if he does not, 'cuz I'm small too! :D
I know how it feels to worry about them being too light and not eating enough.... just when I thought I had finally found something that Dancer would eat, she stops again. I decided today to just stop fiddling with her kibble and let her get used to eating it plain, and then gave her a little canned food sort of like a reward this afternoon for finally emptying her bowl. She seems healthy and active and normal in every other way, the vet says she is absolutely fine, just a little underweight, but not drastically so. My vet said not to worry too much, as some dogs are just not big eaters, and they do fine, if not better in the long run as they don't over-stimulate growth, which can strain bones and joints and cause problems later. I still worry though, and people at work must think I'm nuts when the highlight of my day is any day that dancer eats all her food....lol
Update.....Pisco is going tomorrow to his new vet....this one is highly recomended, he and his son both have studied in the US and are members of the US vet society they have a clinic that is very updated in all treatments and laboratory analisis...today Pisco was in for a quick check up and to meet the vet....they are great :) so I`m taking him tomorrow for a head to toe/inside out exam :) he`s having his blood work, fecal exam, pancreas, kidney, liver, heart, stomach and intestines checked with ecographies.....it will be a long morning at the vet but worth it I hope.....:)
I`ll let you all know the results of everything....
by the way the vet was impress by all my knowledge of OES (very rare here) ..I told him I learned a lot by reading and more with you guys in the forum :)
good news, let us know how it goes! :)
