Erlichiosis took away my happy puppy Nani

Hello, this is one of the sadest days of my life... My dear Nani just died yesterday, due to complications related to erlichiosis. I had rescued her about 2 years ago as she was found wandering in the streets and as I already had another OES, Nina, so, I brought Nani home. She was so skinny by that time but during this two years, she recovered so good and became a really beautiful dog. She was supposed to be one year old by the time I rescued her, so she died at age almost three. Erlichia Canis was not diagnosed on time, and the past five days she almost could not get any sleep as her liver was enlarged. Doxiciclina did not help, and Imizol was to severe for her. She died in my arms... she just shook up a little bit and gave a final puppy sound / cry and stared at me with those beautiful china wall blue eyes.... It was almost surreal for me....

SHe was in her full beautiful coat, just perfect and I am pretty sure that if we would have gone to a dog show, she may have been the winner... She was so lovely and kind... always seeking for my attention no matter what... loyal.... huge.... always willing to please..... I just miss her so much... I will post later some pictures of her the very first day she got home and her last days of a happy short life.............

I'm so sorry for your loss. You were able to improve her life immeasurably and I know she really loved you for it.
So sorry about your loss. I hope you find comfort in this forum.
Thanks for your kind support... I still can't belive it..... I updated my avatar with a picture of Nani just days before she died... I just really miss her...
Oh Josue, that's really sad news. I know how much Nani meant to you. I can't say much more than to tell you that we stand with you and grieve with you over your loss.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Nani.
You gave her a wonderful two year and she loved you very much for it.
Hugs to you
Hi Josue,

I'm very sorry about the loss of Nani. The grief is so overwhelming when we lose one of our beloved furry friends. You rescued her and provided her with a home where she obviously felt much love and I'm sure she in turn gave it all back to you. In time the grief we be replaced by happier memories of her little quirks and antics. I encourage you to post about them when you feel you can do that. The tears will in time be replaced by smiles at her memory.

I have lost many of my furballs in the years and it never gets easier. Each was special and I wished they could live forever. What helped ease the pain was that there was room to help another whom desperately needed a loving home. Never to replace the one lost as each are irreplaceable. That too takes time as we also need to grieve. Your Nani sounded like a very special girl and I'm sure Nina also feels the loss of her sibling as well. Hugs to you and belly rubs for Nina. :hearts:

May she be now running free at the Rainbow Bridge.

Marianne and the boys
Very sad to hear of your loss of the beautiful Nani. Please know you are in my thoughts at this sad time, she was one very special girl.

Thinking of you and nina and may you find comfort with each other at the loss of nani
I'm so sorry for your loss of your beautiful Nani. Take comfort in knowing she knew how much you loved her, and how much she loved you in return.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Hugs

Kim & MAIZIE
so sorry for you loss - you gave Nani a good and loving home, she will of loved you for that xxx
I can't thank you enough for all your kindness. Indeed, Nina keeps looking for her and sniffing around, and this morning she found a small pony tail of coat that I cut from Nani's head before I said good bye to her. Nina got hyper and started to bark at me as if she was asking me what happened... Nina is eating normally, but she is not as excited as always to play in the back yard... they use to play tug of war together and love to chase one another all around the house... It was even funnier when Nina was running so fast from one side of the yard around the house and Nani knew that Nina will eventually appear in the other side so she stalked her to ambush her as soon as she appeared right in the other side........... It as something like herding one another..... Nani was also a talker, so I miss all her "words" and funny sounds... She used to look for my eyes and as soon as I looked at her, she started to do all those crazy sounds... sometimes she even sounded like a parrot and it was so funny....

Nina is here now resting near the desk and this morning we went out to walk as usual, but just the two of us....

Of course, now I have room for another sheepdog that will not replace Nani in my heart, but surely will help me easy the pain. However, in here, there are not rescued sheepdogs (nor even other common breeds) as there is no shelter for any dog nor even dog pounds... and also a sheepdog is so rare to find here... I was incredibly lucky to have found Nani in the streets two years ago... I just could not believe it. So, I want to have another sheepdog but I think I will have to get it from another country, as I did originally with Nina. What do you suggest me, to get a male or a female? I have only had this two female sheepdogs and have no experience with male OES...
Oh, I'm so sorry to here of your loss. Hugs and kisses from us.
I am sorry for your loss. Nani was such a pretty girl and you were lucky to have found each other. I'm glad you still have love in your heart for another sheepie.
im so sorry to hear about nani, it sounds like you took very good care of her and she knew she was loved.
i hope you do find another sheepdog soon to help you and nina cope with your loss.
Thank you guys...

You can see those Nani's lovely eyes a bit sad in the picture as it was taken just days before she died.

You know, I can play piano and guitar and use to play "Martha My Dear" (inspired in Paul's sheepdog) from The Beatles to both Nina and Nani and they enjoyed it so much... They loved to rest besides the piano and did not seem to complain about me singing out of tune.... ;) Nina still does it and loves it, although I know that dogs have a perfect ear to tell when you are even slighthly out of tune... They have been just polite with my efforts...

Yesterday, the very next day after losing Nani I learned how to play a song that I have been refusing to learn 'cause it is kinda sad... "Mandy" from Barry Manilow... He also composed that song for his female dog... and it has helped me to express what I feel... Although I almost can't sing it 'cause my throat gets stuck... but I can surely play it with my hands and my heart... I change the name from Mandy to Nani...

I appreciate so deeply all your kind support. I know nobody could understand me better than people who had grieved from the loss of an OES. They are not like other breeds... they are a breed apart... and their owners are also... a "breed" apart...
I am so sorry for your loss. She sounds like a beautiful dog.
Yes, she was an excellent friend. My wife and I do not have kids, so Nani and Nina have been like our kids in a way... Sometimes you just want to go back in time........... it is so hard.... but, anyway... life goes on.... and now I have so many lovely memories to stick to and lots of videos and pictures of my dear Nanita linda
I am so sorry for your loss.
She was such a beautiful girl.
I know you will miss her and I am sure she knew how much she was loved.
Thank you... You can check pictures of Nani when we took her home with us two years ago and some really recent photos before she died. You can see the difference... There are some pictures of Ninita too...
I am so sorry for your loss. The disease is awful as it destroys so much inside the dog. I have 2 friends who have lost dogs to this disease in the last 2 years. It is new to our area so the vets are not familiar with it. It comes from regions east and south of us. Both dogs were in shelters in those regions.

You gave the dog all the love you had. Can we as for more? Two years is a short time, but it was filled with love, happiness and security. that was more than Nani had when walking the streets. Thank you for saving her.
I'm so sorry about the loss of your beautiful girl. Thanks to you she had two happy years, I hope you can find some comfort in that.
Thank you all for your support. You are making this tough moment easier... I am so grateful...
Just want to say how much I admire what you did for nani from when you first found her and the love and dedicated 2 years you had her, she turned into a beautiful girl under your loving care. It does hit hard when we loose one, but believe me memories are there forever and they do stay with you always. I have just been through 1 year anniversary of loosing one of my girls, it does get a bit easier with time. I hope you find a new pal for nina and your family soon.
Thank you Lisa. I think it was you who helped me to whiten the beards of my sheepdogs and you can see in the picture that your suggestions worked out just fine.

Yes, I am working on getting a new sheepdog (I would not want another breed) as Nina seems to be missing Nani too much... She keeps sniffing around and resting just in the spot where Nani used to rest... Sometimes I also make the mistake to call her "Nani" just out of the confusion and then Nina just stare at me and look around... It is kinda shocking how another creation (dogs in this case) can be so sensitive when a loved one is not around anymore...

So, what you guys suggest me... to get a male or a female OES? I only have had this two females and have no experience with males
I have both a male and female.
Males OES's are submissive to females.
Pepsi, my male, fell in love with Rags as soon as I brought her home and let her rule the house. Females seems to be more independant than males. Males seem to be more velcroy (ok not a word :D ) to their owners. Don't get me wrong... females are attached to their owners too. Pepsi prefers cuddling with me.. Rags prefers lying on the floor and getting attention on her own terms.
Maybe Nina would like a boyfriend? Though it is really up to you.
I am glad the advice worked

Male versus female, it is really up to you, both are great. The males are bigger and there coats are a lot thicker, so when it comes to grooming a bit harder. I am only 5'2 so I find the females easier as I am the one that has to lift them into the bath and onto a grooming table. Boys have all that plumbing underneath too so that can get to be quite a job keeping that knot free and clean. Girls are a bit more independant and boys after they mature seem to be a bit more laid back.

I think nina will be great with either  Try and get a youngster as that will help enormously with nina accepting a new member coming into the family.

Best wishes with your search and keep us posted on how it goes, special cuddles for nina too, she will settle soon and be her happy self again. I do believe they grieve too for a period of time.

Hugs to you all
Thank you Elissa and Lisa... I'll go for a male. It is just true what you have said about females being more independent, that is the way Nina is. However, Nani was a bit different. She could not be away from me at any minute, maybe because she was rescued and you know... rescued puppies consider you as their whole world... :'( She would do whatever I ask her and will always... always seek for my attention, eyes and hands.... Anyway, I would love to have a male sheepdog and I am pretty sure Nina will embrace him willingly. Does anyone in this forum knows about a reputable breeder in the area of Miami or Houston? (those are the closest USA cities to Central America in terms of flights). I contacted a breeder from Panamá (I live in Honduras) and they will not have puppies until September.... and all their puppies will surely be brown eyed, and I want both eyes blue....... In Guatemala there are only puppy mills or backyard breeder and the same is for El Salvador... So, I think my only option is to get the puppy from the USA. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated by us and of course by Nina... :) You know... Nina keeps staying just in Nani's favorites spots.... and refuse to move from there.... I think she keeps missing her a lot and it hurts me so see her like that...
I am so sorry for your loss of Nani. Just looking at her pictures it is easy to see she knew how much she was loved. What a beautiful girl!

Have you considered adopting another rescue dog instead of getting a puppy?

In what part of Honduras do you live? I've been to San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. :)
I find it so hard to answer these. I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers...Nani was just beautiful and obviously well loved...The name means a lot to me when I read it...as I originally wanted to name Panda, Noni...after my wonderful grandmother who Panda shares a birthday with, but my husband didnt like it....Its not Nani, but its close enough....Hugs to you and Nina!
We moved from San Pedro Sula to Siguatepeque (inner highlands) six months ago. In here is much colder so the weather is just perfect for the OES. Nani was found in San Pedro Sula two years ago while we were living there.

Yes, I have considered rescuing another OES, but in my country they are really rare... I do not know of any other person who has an OES, even asking all the veterinarians I know and attending to dog shows. I've heard that some people in San Pedro Sula as well as Tegucigalpa may have a couple of OES, but nobody seems to know how to contact them.

Thank you Darcy. We named her Nani as she was like a mirror reflection of Nina :) Also, from the Nani dog in Peter Pan. I remember she got used to us so quickly and house training took only one - two days with just one accident at all in all these years.... and another one the very day she died, 'cause she was so weak and could not go out anymore or ask to go out. She was the sweetest thing you could imagine. I miss rubbing her ears and shaking hands with her...
Extra hugs!!!!
Thank you. All of you are just amazing

Actually, I was thinking of a rescue dog from the US. I don't think it would be any more difficult than getting a puppy?

Just a thought! :)
That is a good idea. However, I think it will be more difficult to have air shipped an adult dog than a puppy. Well, that's what I think. Any advice?
Josue,

I'm so sorry.

That's true. It would probably be more expensive since it is based on weight if they are shipped as cargo. However, if someone were traveling with him/her, and the crate could be classified as luggage, it probably wouldn't be as much $$. :)
Thank you Deborah

Regarding the shipping issues... well, we'll see and I will let you know guys...
I am so sad for you. Your Nani was absolutely beautiful as well as your Nina.

I know what a great hole it leaves in your heart. Have comfort in the fact that she knew so much love and care because of you.

We have a Sheepie mix boy, Copper, boys are really sweet and not as bossy as the girls. The only drawback is they like to go to the bathroom on the house and on the leg of the Barbequer.

Hope you find comfort in all of the support you have.

Wow Darcy, Rags shares her B-day with my Grandmother who is also gone.
Hi Again,

What a difference of two years made in Nani's life...she went from rags to riches in her photos..and what a beautiful girl she was.

I thought I'd mention that I got Panda from Hong Kong. His rescuers arranged for him to be flown as cargo originally..but the cost was going to be aprox 2000 to fly him from HongKong to Canada. Someone helped out and agreed to accompany him as they were flying to Vancouver..the price dropped to 200, as he was no longer cargo but "extra baggage". I think that would be the case although not sure about the exact amounts if you got a rescue from North America.

Another thing is Hong Kong was on the list of countries that domestic animals required no quarantine entering Canada. If the country you are recieving the animal from or your country requires it then there would be the quarantine in effect.

I really hope you find another to help as to each animal one person can make such a difference. As in the case of Nani and you. Hugs to you.

Marianne and the boys
Thank you Marianne and Sheepie lover. I am still contacting some kennels in Central America but nothing possitive so far. There is a possibility for a puppy from one reputable kennel in USA. I am also browsing and "googling" rescued males. I will keep you updated...
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Thank you Tove
The pictures of Nani and Nina are so tender and beautiful. I am touched by what a wonderful two loving years you provided to Nani and I hope you and Nina find happiness in having had the too-brief opportunity to share her life. I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you Valerie. Your OES are so beautiful too :)
Hello, Just a quick update: Since May 17 a cute little male puppy OES is filling up our hearts, Max. He is so cute and I will post some pictures of him. He is now 3 and a half months and is getting along with Nina. She is starting to run again all around the house and lossing the weight she gained after we lost Nani. We are all happy to be with little Max. I am not planning on breeding them as Max is deaf. He was supposed to be put to sleep but we save him and he is so big and happy as I never imagined. He learned to obey the "sit", "down", "walk", "stop", "inside", "up" commands just by looking at my hands and face and he is 75% housetrainned by now. He is such a velcro puppy. Of course, nothing will fill up the empty space that Nani left, but Max has made a huge space of his own in our hearts. Thanks for all your support. :)
Josue,
Good idea getting a male. As you said Nani cannot be replaced. So with a male you will be less likely to compare.
Also I am sure he has brought lots of smiles to your home.
It is wonderful that you saved his life!!!
Congrats on the new puppy!!
How wonderful! I'm so glad to hear about Max and that he is giving Nina happiness as well! :D
Hooray! I'm so happy a new sheepdog has joined your family. Thank you for taking a deaf dog........so many are being born now, it is discouraging. But you have shown they are trainable and just as loving.

I'm sure Nina is happy to have a friend again.

Thank you all for your kind support. You can check now some pictures of puppy Maxwell. He is so talented despite his deafness and is learning everything so fast. For example, when he is outside at night and I want him to come inside, I just turn on and off the outside light, and he will immediately come to the door and sit, waiting for me to open the door. He loves to play with Nina at any moment and then, suddenly, he lays in the floor and fall asleep almost instantly. Something he loves is for me to rub his ears. I keep on talking to him despite he can't hear me as he always looks at my eyes and hands trying to figure out what I want to communicate to him :)
What a cutie he is!! :hearts: :hearts:
Nina seems happy to have a friend.
Congratulations! I'm sure your dear Nani is smiling down at you and your family. Max sounds so smart and he is beautiful. May you enjoy many happy years ahead! Looking forward to hearing many happy stories in the years to come.
Congratulations Josue, max is adorable, wishing you many years of happiness all of you and so great Nina is happy too now that she has max in her life. :D
