Puppy cut

Does anybody know where I can get instructions for a "puppy cut" for my OES. I do not live in the US and groomers here do not seem to know much about OES. My poor Margaret has had some awful hairdos. It gets hot here in central Mexico in the summer and I would like to get her a shorter hairdo. But the only cut the local groomers seem to understand is shaving her down.
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
Have them use a guard on the blade that is 1/2"...or during the summer here in AZ I use a 1/4'' guard....not shaved but pretty close....also, if you use the 1/4'' on the body use the 1/2'' on her head and legs...believe it or not she will look even...and plus, I just like a little more fluff on the head :D
They can't do a puppy cut unless she is 100% mat free. Otherwise the guard gets caught in any little snarl.
If you do go ahead and shave her down now is the best time. Even now I know it's hot in Mexico, but it will be even hotter in a month or two right?
If she is shaved now she will have about an inch of coat in about a month, which is enough to give at least some protection from the sun.
Thanks much folks! I didn't know about the guards.
Val, I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to insert your new Maggie pics here for future searches on puppy cuts. She looks so nice, I'll bet a lot of people (including myself!) would appreciate having her picture as a reference for the groomer!

The groomer will be flattered! I'm delighted if Maggie is a puppy cut model. :)
Maggie looks beautiful. It looks like her legs were left a little fluffier than her body? And do you know about how long the hair on her body is there? 1/2" sounds so short...but she looks really great! Thanks!
So, I"ve been flipping back and forth between this and the thread about summer cuts, trying to figure this whole thing out...

Like many, I'd like to keep Walter in a full coat, especially since there's a family wedding coming up in July, and I want to impress all the relatives with my handsome little guy...

So, do puppies (Walter is 6mo) have the "undercoat" that I could work on stripping? Or, will he be shedding his puppy coat soon anyway?

The other thing I was considering is giving him a slight trim now(according to y'all's wonderful directions and adorable pictures ;)), in the hopes that any hacking I might do will grow back by July.

Any thoughts on the subtle differences in coats would be helpful in my decision.

PS. at what point do OESs usually start greying? Will that come with the "adult" fur?

Thanks Gang!
There all different when it comes to greying from the Puppy coat, usually around the 6 month mark you start to see signs of it, sometimes earlier and others are later. The first place you usually see it is up the back of the hind legs, usually just starting around the top of the hocks and also the grey comes in across the shoulders too.

When all the grey is through that is called the junior coat, then there is another change roughly around 2 and you start seeing a slightly darker coat imerging, this is the adult mature coat happening. :D
That pic of Maggie is just absolutely gorgeous! That's the prettiest, most practical cut I've ever seen. I'm going to take her picture in to my new groomer next week & hopefully come out with something like that. Is that 1/2" on her head & legs, 1/4" on the body?

Miss Maggie makes a wonderful model. I think she's definately cover girl material. Pretty girl!

I took the picture to my groomer and Clyde turned out as good as a short haircut could look. Pardon me, I'm still mourning the loss of the long hair, it really is a great, practical cut for an active OES!
This will be our first trip to the groomers and this is our first experience with OES. We've only had the girls about two weeks. Their hair is mat free and brushed well, but it is hot & lower maintenance would be nice since we do a lot of walking in the grass. Do I need to tell the groomer how long to cut to get the Maggie's supermodel look?

Thanks for your info,
diana, Ms Mopsey & Ms Prissy
Thanks for kind words re Maggie's haircut! There was another post where the groomer explained how she did it but it seems to have been deleted in the recent crash. I searched for it via google to see if I coud find it but no luck. Does anyone remember what she said she did?
Diana, you could start off by asking your groomer if they know what a puppy cut is. We've gotten Barney cut 3 times. The first 2 times we said, just shave him--and they did. But this last time we asked them to do a puppy cut and the groomer was great and experienced and Barney turned out wonderfully. Your groomer might surprise you!

You can tell them that a puppy cut is meant to make them look similar to a puppy (duh) and the fur around the body is probably about a half inch and then the head is a little longer. It makes them look like plush dolls.

I'm so excited you have Mops and Prissy!

I actually printed it out somewhere. I may have it saved on my home computer-- I'll check when I get home. I know that she used clippers on the body and worked some of the mats out by hand-- I want to say 3/8 but I don't remember. I know she scissor cut the legs with 12 inch scissors. That's all I have in my memory bank this morning.
Jill ~

Did you ever find the instructions that you printed out for Maggie's famous puppy cut?

The wigglebums have grown out enough now that they are in need of a cut and I'd really like to try this one. I just love it.

Thanks!
I can't find them anywhere. Can you take in a picture to help? I remember part of the directions. She cut the body down to about 1/2 inch all around (I'm assuming clippers but she didn't specify) and on the legs, she used her longest scissors and left them about an inch longer for the gogo boot effect.

If that isn't enough, I can see if whoever did Clyde at his groomer remembers what they did because I gave them to her-- wait, that might be where the printed directions ended up!
Thanks for checking, Jill. I will take the picture with me when we go. I just thought it would be helpful if I had the instructions, too. No worries.
Took the wigglebums in to the groomer this morning for the "Maggie cut". :D

Crossing my fingers it turns out great!! :P
Good luck, I'm sure they'll look great. Clyde has grown out beautifully from his cut. In a month or so we'll almost have long hair again!
Thanks! I hope so!!

Clyde's coat looks great!!

Are you glad you did it now or you still wish you hadn't?
I'm glad because it is growing in so nice and even. It was one of those "it's for the best" things that suck at the time but are good later on!
They just called from the groomer to say that my wigglebums are ready. As soon as I'm off this conference call that starts in one minute, I'll go get them. I'm so excited to see how it turns out. :excited:
Can't wait to see them! Bring your camera!!!
Ooooh I hope it is good - can't wait to see!!
They're back! I'm pleased! :D

As soon as the pics are approved, I'll post them here. :D
Approved!

It's just the angle of the picture. Beau is actually about 4" taller than Gen. :D
Hi Tammy,

They are so beautiful!! SamSun and I just might have to drive over to your groomer. She/he did an awesome job. I'm counting down the days until the picnic. Is there anything I can do to help you out??
Thanks! If you'd like, I'll be glad to PM you the info on the groomer! :D

Re: NC Picnic
We're meeting on Sunday to work on it. So, I'll be glad to let you know what, if anything, needs to be done after the meeting! :D
They both look so sharp... the "Magdo" is awsome.
Oh, they look so cute! Defintitely squishy.
Thanks Tammy!

Information about both would be great.

Thanks again,
Tammie
