Dog on dog tug of war

Now that Bear is settling in, he and Clyde have been playing lot, which I'm really glad to see. However, I notice that Clyde seems to give up a toy once a tug of war begins. Here's how it plays out: Clyde grabs a toy and shakes it to get Bear interested. Bear runs over and grabs onto it so they both have a hold on it. This goes on for a few seconds and then Clyde just lets him have it. Sometimes he walks away, sometimes he grabs a different toy and starts it over.

For some reason, this leaves me a little unsettled. Clyde established himself as the alpha as soon as Bear got here and it seems like this behavior is letting Bear win. Should this concern me or is this just something that maybe Clyde doesn't really care about so he doesn't view it as an attack on his dominance. Should I just mind my own business and let them play? :?

I think so yes. As long as there is no fighting, I think let them work it out.

It is really great that they are getting along so well. Maybe Clyde is just introducing Bear to the various toys?
Also the fact that bear is still a baby (BIG BABY) clyde is probably sensing that too and at the moment he is posing no threat as far as the Alpha siatuation goes. I would just let them work it out too as long as there is no confrontation going on with the toys. If it does get a bit rough then take the toys away from both of them for a time out period. Sheesh like dealing with toddlers all over again
Clyde is Mr. Short Attention Span with toys so it really could be he doesn't care. Heck, maybe he's just being nice to the new kid and sharing. He's usually such a little piggy that it didn't even occur to me that that's what it could be!

The only reason I'm concerned is because Bear is going to get A LOT bigger and I don't want fights to occur then when they won't be so evenly matched.
When Glacier first lived her, they'd play like that. When Glacier returned 5 years later, no more games :( :( They are testing each other, let them work it out.

While I typed the above, Jack came and ate my beans and rice so quietly I never heard the thief !! ARGH!
You can look at it in a couple of ways. Could be that Clyde is deciding what toys to play with and when, so he actually IS controlling the situation.

The alpha in a group of dogs is normally quiet and respected. He does not use nay force to PROVE his status. He just is.

And as for Bear taking over, if he did, so be it. Clyde may be perfectly happy having someone else make all the hard decisions.

Leave them sort it out. I don't anticipate you will have any problems at all. Their relationship is developing, and it may takes months for it to stabalize, especially since Bear is so young.

Good point. I didn't think of it that way and that could very well be what's happening. The more I think about it, I think if he really wanted the toy, he'd get angry.
Mitch does that with Marley.

I can't figure it out either :?

I have come to the conclusion that Mitch has got some brains though.

If Marley is playing with a toy Mitch wants Mitch picks up another toy dangles it in front of Marley to tease him they both play tug of war for a bit then Mitch picks up the original toy Marley was playing with and runs like hell up stairs with it
It probably is a behavior thing and if so, they'll figure it out. But, for argument's sake, take a look at Clyde's teeth and mouth. Just be sure he's not having any problems that come from the actual tugging.
