No ticks or fleas either. Apparently for a mosquito to become infected, the temp must CONSISTENTLY stay at a certain temp (vet can't remember exactly, but it's like 60-something). Well, even when we have hot days, it drops below freezing in the summers, so that never happens. Due to that same reason, a dog can't pass it along either (a dog that comes up to Alaska that has it). They only recommend that a dog stays on heartworm 1-2 months after getting here ...and a month before going back to the lower 48. |

Well, that is surely something positive!! |
I don't remember the weather getting below freezing in Anchorage the whole 3 weeks I was there in July and August...? |
hmmm, well I know when we came up to go house hunting last summer, it definitely did. The high was 57 when we got here. I remember making fun of Mr. J because he said he was going to go running in the morning. Well.. he stepped outside and then came back in. Now, those temps would be hot to him since they make them run when it's -10 below. I guess even if it is a little above freezing, it's still not warm enough at night. :/ |
I don't give my dogs heartworm preventative either....
It's mislabeled as such really, it doesn't "prevent" anything, it just kills any they may have once a month. |
Hmm..maybe my husband should be looking at jobs at the base in Alaska? lol It would be awesome not to worry about ticks, fleas, and heartworms. |
