Rescued dog is throwing up

My name is Mallory, my wife Amy and I just got our first dog together about 5 days ago. He is 6 or 7 and is a small dog, about 15 lbs. He isn't a sheep dog, but this site was the only thing I could find to help me. On sunday afternoon he started throwing up and threw up all night and into monday morning....about 10 times in all. I took him to the vet first thing monday morning and they said they couldn't see anything wrong with him. The rest of the day I gave him small amounts of water and no food. By wed. morning he was fine and had not thrown up in over 48 hrs. I came homw from work today and he had thrown up. He then threw up again. He is once again very lithargic, which isn't normal. The throw up is yellow. I don't know what to do, I'm taking him to get groomed tomorrow, and there is a vet their as well that i will talk to. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem and what I can do???

Did they run any bloodwork when you had him at the vets?
I would not take him to be groomed. He is stressed enough. This could make him worse. He is so new to your home. Also go back to the vet.
I would take him to the vet again, or a new vet....
Throwing up yellow bile means they are throwing up on an empty stomach. I would give small amounts of water every 15 minutes for a couple of hours, and then start with small amounts of food.
If he is lethargic that is not a good sign at all, if you cannot get him to at least try to drink a little, I would suggest a tiny bit of corn syrup on the roof of his mouth, it will absorb quickly and hopefully pick him up enough to get him to drink.
Please let us know how he does.
Thank you all for the advice! My wife and I took him to the vet right after I posted my questions. He had a more extensive check up and the Doc took a stool sample, which turned out negative. Then Butler got a couple of shots, one for nausia and the other was penicillin. We also got some meds for the next few days. We got him back home and then went to church. When we got back we saw that he had not thrown up and was incredibly energetic. And I am extremely happy to say that he ate his first full meal at our home. I know we're not out of the weeds yet, but everything is looking so much better!!! :D I am still debating whether or not to have him groomed (he is an absolute shaggy mess!) tomorrow. I might just take the advice and wait till later. Thank you again so much for all the advice.
I would honestly wait until your dog has adjusted to you and your wife first before introducing him to new people. He has to learn that you are now his mom and dad and that he can trust you and not that you will take him some place, leave him there because if you adopted him... it probably means that he was abandoned or surrendered or whatever but he needs to learn to trust people again and make a bond with you guys. If he is that bad maybe a mobile groomer or just put him in the tub gently and try yourself. Since he wont know what is happening it is better for you to do it I think so he learns to trust you and say hey this isn't so bad.... good luck... did the vet rule out megaesophagus by any chance? or it could just be nerves from being in a new place all of a sudden.... Either way good luck and keep us updated...
