I talked to other dog people where I worked and got recommendations. I know several people who either show or do agility so I talked to them. I asked them why they liked it, why they went back and what, to them, constituted a good class for puppies. We all live within a reasonable distance from each other and they all recommended the same place. It turned out great. |
I did the same thing, basically. I talked to my true dog friends and asked for recommendations and ended up in a great class. |
I learned about puppy classes through the web, but most immediately through friends who directed me to an AWESOME grooming/boarding facility close to home. They have puppy classes there in addition to behavioral classes, socializing, etc. Good luck in your search and I hope you find a great class nearby! |
I would suggest contacting your local kennel club |
When is is okay to start? Our breeder said we needed to wait until Foz had all his shots. This would be another 2 months away when he's 16 wks. Is this accurate? |
Stacy- The groups I've been looking at indicate a start date for puppy kindergarten as early as 8 weeks, as long as you can prove their up to date on their shots. Pippin is 10 weeks right now and i really want to get him in somewhere. The problem is A) none of my dog friends(Co-workers) live by me, and I don't want to drive 45 minutes for classes B) I live on the outskirts of our metropolitan area, so I'm having some trouble finding a center near me C) our local OES club is not very active . Maybe I'll try looking on the minneapolis kennel club site- they're much more active... |
I don't know what you have near you, but maybe try a park district/community center/YMCA... |
Puppies need to have their first shots before attending....I was lucky..on monday nights there is dog classes right across the street from us..literally....Panda went all the way through third grade....lol.. |
Get them in as early as possible. They need to get under control right away. Ususually the first set or first 2 sets are OK, as they are boosters from their mother's immunisation that wears off. Rabies are at 4 months so that is too late.
Be sure to go to a class, first, and watch the trainer before you sign up. If both the handlers and the puppies are not having fun find another place. Is there a Petsmart close to you? They offer puppy classes. |
