Chummie still has giardia. She has looked so miserable and pathetic the past two days. Wouldn't even go for her afternoon walk. She started a second course of antibiotics tonight. Maggie learned how to jump the baby gate. She demonstrated when I was heading to the door with Chummie for a lowkey solo walk for my sick sweetie. Good news: I took the girls out for a late walk (10 pm). There was no one in the fenced dog run but a number of dogs playing in the open field. I decided to let Maggie and Chummie play with those older kids hanging out back behind the school. . . I was nervous at first, but I have never seen Maggie run so fast. It was incredible. She stayed completely within the boundaries but she tore it up. Even more shocking -- Chummie charged, ran, played and generally horsed around with the other dogs. Not just once, not twice but she interacted so much that I lost count. She looked so happy!! It was a thrill. I know it was risky to let them off leash but they had quite a wild and fun night. . . |

did you mean that there were dogs that had no owners there, and they were all playing in the doggie park??? Don't laugh too hard if i am reading this wrong, i have never seen or heard of a doggie park before coming onto this forum so i am not that knowledgeable>!>!> I just thought it was interesting that there were unowned dogs hanging out at a park for dogs
remember what i said about laughing too hard Shannon |
Sorry to hear that you are still dealing with the Giardia. Since Chummie's older, her immune system must be having a harder time healing.
Glad to hear about your off-leash success. Now you can come to our house! |
I hope the giardia clears up for good soon
Sounds like you all had fun at the park though |
Wow! It does sound like a rollercoaster day!
The thrills and ups of viewing Chummie running must have been awesome. The lows of hearing she still has giadia...hugs and sloppy sheepie kisses from the boys to her. Marianne and the boys |
Sorry she's still not feeling well. What a fun day at the park! |

Shannon -- Sorry that was confusing! No, the dogs were there with their owners. Some people prefer the unfenced area and let their dogs play just outside of the fenced-in dog park. Usually, there are enough dogs in the dog park that Maggie never notices the dogs outside (even at 10pm). But last night, the dog park was empty and Maggie looked so sad seeing all the dogs playing out in the field. So, against my better instincts, I let mine out to play with them. I knew Maggie would have fun and she immediately put on jet speed while running with the other dogs. It was a competely delightful shock to see Chummie joining in on the action. I had no idea she had it in her. I guess she doesn't feel comfortable in the fenced-in area (having a fence does change the atmosphere). Or maybe she prefers dirt and grass to dust and gravel. . . Deb -- They'd LOVE to but squirrels could be an issue. . . |

Sounds like Maggie and Chummie had a blast... my dogs prefer the unfenced atmosphere too.
With regard to the giardia, when I first brought Dudley, my Berner home at 10 weeks, (4 years ago)... he had the runs All The Time... I went to the vet, week after week.. her opinion.. I was overreacting because I was a new dog owner... it was normal for puppies to have the runs...I might of been new.. but I wasn't stupid.... I consulted with another vet.. OVER THE PHONE.. he told me.. "your dog has giardia.. sprinkle Metimucle on his food until you can get here to see me"... (the appointment was a couple of days away). Anyways.. almost instantly, his stool got harder. Give the metimucle a try...it may work. Bren |
What is it about those roller coaster days that end on a good note? I'll bet you were dancing around the living room with a grin on your face.
I can picture them both in the field and it gives me a thrill - all is well with the world. Poor Chum - hopefully another round of antibiotics will kick the Giardia for good. Give her a skritch for me. |
Sorry to hear that Chum is still under the weather; however, glad to hear her spirits sure picked up at the park. |
Thanks everyone for sympathy and for sharing my glee.
Maggie actually had completed two courses of the antibiotics but Chum's appeared resolved after one course only to resurface last weekend. I should have had her retested before concluding it was eliminated. Maggie is now on Tylan powder to rebalance the atmosphere in her digestive tract. It is an antibiotic that kills whatever bad stuff the metronazidole (flagyl) let flourish while it was being used to kill the giardia. Chum is back on the metro, twice daily. Both are on a Eukanuba's "low residue" diet so their stool is actually okish. Does anyone else have experience with the low residue diet? Apparently, it is used for dogs with chronic collitis. |
Aww, poor Chummie!! I hope she feels better soon. Hopefully her aging system can handle it.
I can just picture Maggie running through that field! Luckily neither one of them just darted out into the street! So glad to hear Chum felt well enough to play too. I bet the grass felt a whole lot better on their feet than the stones and gravel of the dog park. Big hugs to Chum and Maggie from Drez and me, please! |
Poor Chumley - so sorry to hear she's feeling poorly again, Val. I hope this round of treatment knocks it out for good.
How cool that she had such fun with the dogs outside the park last night, though! Love it! Sounds like both girls had a good time and made Mom proud of their good behaviour! |
Yuck, poor Chum and poor Val. What a mess. I hope this round of meds knock it out and everyone stays healthy. |
Hi Valerie.
Poor Chum. Oscar can so relate to the tummy issues. Anyway, one of the many foods we tried was the Eukanuba Lo-Residue. While it helped firm up the stool, it caused Oscar to start chewing his paws like crazy about a half hour after he ate it. I think he was sensitive to something in it, so we discontinued it and went to Science Diet's version of Lo-Res. Oscar also had recurring giardia issues, and has been on metronidazole pretty frequently throughout his young life (almost 2 yrs old). I was interested to hear about Tylan powder, as that seems to be the ONLY med Oscar hasn't taken for him tummy! Oscar now eats Science Diet Z/D Ultra, but we are going to revisit that with the vet as soon as we get back from our vacation. (Oscar is with us in Florida.) Good luck with Chummie! |
Val,
I hope that Chummie feels better soon. Poor girl! Glad to hear that they both had fun running free. That must have been wonderful to watch Chummie run like that |
Here's a link to info about the Tylan Powder:
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_tylosin.html It does seem to have helped Maggie. So far, I have not noticed any side effects from the low residue diet. They both seem to love it. Or maybe there were both desperate for a switch from the bland diet they've been suffering through these past weeks. I will pay attention to signs of possible allergy. Is there any reason not to keep them on a low residue diet if it helps address their stomach issues? |
