walter and i decided to take a walk around the neighborhood (my dad banned us from the dog park when there are mud puddles since we both came back soaked in mud last ntime and left a mess in the bathtub... haha whoops) we went one way, met kipling, the puppy down the block. went all the way to the end of the neighborhood, turned around and went all the way down to the other end where we met another little puppy. im just so glad that spring is here and that i have a sheepie to spend it with. i know if walter wasnt around i probably wouldve slept til noon and missed a beautiful day. but instead we walked over a mile and appreciated the day together theres nothing like a little fur monster that makes you appreciate the finer things, like a beautiful spring day. i hope you all had nice weather and got a chance to walk your sheepie as well |

I thought chicago was the windy city. Here in derby today took dougal out for around 2 hours we had gale force wind gusting 55 miles an hour. We have just gone into spring. Not that dougal bothers what the weather is when he is out. He normally goes one long walk then 2 or 3 short walks on the park and plays with his pals there. I get so much pleasure from him
when he is toddling along the look on his face is worth a million dollars. luv pepe. |
Hi,
I posted a reply yesterday but the computer crashed just as I pressed send so here goes again. It sounds like Lil Walty and you also had time to bond and enjoy the day together. Now I admit I'm basically lazy and probably wouldn't walk as much as I do if it weren't for taking the furball out on his daily trek. It sounds like you had such a wonderful time! I had to chuckle when you mentioned about the muddly offleash dog park..the one is my neighborhood has several mud holes that the dogs seem to always find. Hopefully they will soon dry up in the park I use and yours and you and your buddy can once again enjoy the visit there just as I will too. Give Lil Walty a big hug from me he sounds like such a character and I love hearing about him. |
I must admit I feel guilty it has been 70 - 80 degrees here in Florida (not to brag)I take Grizzy and Wooly to the dog park, to the beach ,and swimming in the pond several times a week.I love to walk and what better way to spend the day than with my family and dogs(my k-9 family) Thanks so much for the post it made me feel so good to hear about your great friends and walking companions ps I leave this beautiful place in 5 days so I have to brag now I am going back to chiili Va. |
What a gorgeous weekend here too. We worked in the yard both days. Mowed, weeded, and shaved Abbi. Who took off like the wind around and around the yard. She loves being shaved and loved being out in the almost 80'F weather. Gorgeous. We had about 20 mph breeze that would cool us off. I think everyone in the family has a sunburn tonight.
We deserved it after all the rain. Abbi has so much more energy without the hair. She chased dove, mockingbirds and even buzzards high and low in the sky. We have the usual starlings, grackles, blue jays, and cardinals too. The most spring-like sight of all was flocks of martins looking for their roosts. The early evening visit of a apir od wood peckers has me looking at my trees though. Spring is here! And I guess I AM bragging. It was a great day with family. |
Big Ben's family enjoyed the 80 degree Texas weather this weekend, too. Can't say our furry beast loved it, though. Granted it is early but he wanted nothing to do with getting in the swimming pool with the kids. He's still pretty scared but that is probably due to his falling into the hole when the pool was being built. He wasn't hurt but landed in a foot of the most foul looking water from rains we had during the construction. I hate getting the chlorine out of my daughter's hair...maybe it isn't such a big deal if he doesn't decide to try swimming!
Anyway, we were all outside this weekend and he would beg to go back inside! Too nice of a weekend for that crazy behavior. He played tennis ball with my son for a while and finally he settled in the garage while cars were washed and the yard work was done. At least he got some fresh air and exercise! |
so it was lovely weather again today, so i took walter for another walk.
unfortunately we had many distractions today. everytime a car drove by walter went nuts and i had to hold on really tight to make sure he didnt chase it. also my neighborhood doesnt allow fences so many dogs have electric fences and hang out in the front yard. well everytime we saw a dog walter would again go nuts and id have to hold on really tight. the other problem is that when we get to the end of the neighborhood and turn back walter gets really excited to go home and starts pulling on the leash. he has a choke chain, but he doesnt mind being choked! he was choking himself and wheezing and it made me really nervous. everytime he pulled i said no and made him sit and stay and then i walked about 3 feet and told him to come. i thought he would get sick of sitting, but we basically did it the whole way home. its pretty embarassing when your dog is the one walking you, but im mostly worried that i wont be able to hold him once he gets stronger. does anyone have any suggestions so that walter will not pull me? |
Hi,
A harness is way better for a pulling dog. Another amazing trick of trainers is to loop the leash around their tummy and bring it up about the middle of their back...works in less than a min - I kid you not!! The dog does a couple turns and then walks right beside you. Hope that helps. |
Thanks for the tip on the old pulling on the lead Im going to give it a try both our 5mth old puppy and our 18mth old pull on the lead so I will let you know how well it works.
Ps its cold and miserable in good old blighty.. Oh for some sun, Im fed up of muddy paws and washing towels. |
marianne- i tried the looping the leash trick with walter and while it worked... i noticed that it really made him angry. he looked totally confused and after a while he didnt even want to walk anymore.
so i got myself a gentle leader... i put it on walter once and he was sooo angry. does anyone else have any experience with the gentle leader? how long should it take walter until hes not angry everytime he sees it? |
According to my vet (who also does training) and who swears she has never failed with a Gentle Leader, Gentle Leaders should never be put on dogs until they are acclimated to them which takes a couple of weeks. To do this, you hold the nose loop wide open, with the fitting clip as loose as possible and teach the dog to put his nose through it, giving a special treat and praise every time he does it. This should be done at least daily, and can be done more frequently, until the dog can't wait to get his nose through the loop.
Henry and I are almost ready to go to my vet for one-on-one training having spent several weeks training him that the Gentle Leader means hot dog bits (a very special and rare treat.) Henry pulls so hard when he see another dog on our walks, he pulls me over about once a month -- my knees are usually all banged up and my shoulders ache! I am really interested in how this works for you and others who have succeeded with a Gentle Leader, I get so many good ideas from this forum. Please let us know. |
