Turns out I had nothing to worry about as neither one of them were very interested at all. There were just way too many distractions for Genevieve. She was much more interested in the other dogs and whatever was going on in the pen next to her. I didn't even get her and the sheep in the same picture. Beau was only slightly more interested. Here are a couple of shots of him in the pen with the sheep. As you can see, he's only mildly intrigued. It was as if he were out for an afternoon stroll and they just ambled along in front of him. Here you can see him giving that last sheep a nudge to get her moving, which pleased the handler. The handler said he seemed to be more interested in what I was doing than the sheep. He just looked bored most of the time. Oh well...I guess there are no herding trials in our future. After Beau, she put in this adorable little border collie puppy, about six months old, her first time in and you should've seen her! I was too mesmerized to take pictures. She was a natural, rounding them up, moving them along...it was amazing. I guess we'll have to figure out something else to do. Maybe carting? |

Tammy, you just have a Southern Belle and Southern Gentleman...not interested in working for a living...
Wow--Beau looks TALL! |
Perfect analogy, Steph- Love it!
The handler that you see there is about my same height, too. So, you can see how tall Beau is to me. He's a big boy! |
WOW what a tall OES and I agree they are just southerniers |
You know, Beau looks a LOT like Bentley!
Too bad about the lack of interest in herding. If it makes you feel any better, Bentley's an ambler too, unless there is a chase on. We should invent a sport just for them! |
Actually, Jil, that DOES make me feel better!
Perhaps they'd be good at chess? |
Neat!:)
He is a big boy! Wow... look at those legs! LOL |
Well, you tried. THe picture of him just walking behind the sheep is very funny! |

Maybe...... |
King's pawn opening, but it looks like she is trying to move twice... cheater. |
OMG! I forgot that Toby plays chess! Maybe he can teach Beau, Gen, & Bentley when we're camping! |
Ha ha! I can see Bentley being a sore loser and swiping the pieces off the board with his paw! |
I decided to check this forum because I just remembered that you said you would be taking them herding this past weekend. I wish I could have caught it earlier!!!
I thought it was so funny when you said it looks like you guys were just taking a stroll because it looks like you guys are out "walking the sheep" in the 3rd pic. Like Beau and the sheep have been ol friends forever. The sheep look so clean!!! I also can't believe how big (tall) Beau looks. I don't know why.. he just does (and not in the other pics I've seen). He looks great. How tall are you? Maybe that's it. I'm sorry they weren't more interested! As I said before, there were some dogs there that weren't interested when we went too. Kept looking for mommy!!! |
If he couldn've enticed them to play with him, I think he would've been in heaven. I guess we'll have to live vicariously through Yuki's herding!
That's the handler that you see in the pictures, but she & I are about the same height - 5'4". It's hard to get an accurate measurement of him, because he won't be still long enough. But, the last time I tried I got 30". He's a pretty tall boy. I call him my gentle giant. |
We're going to start herding in a couple of weeks. I'm more worried that Clyde will want to hump the sheep. |
You've been mentioning Clyde and humping a lot lately...is there a story there? |
Lol. No, he just air humps when he gets excited or happy, every day. Once in awhile if you get too close to the air hump, you get sucked into it and you just have to take one for the team. It's almost like he's in another world when it's happening and it just has to run its course. It's such a regular thing, it's easy to see it happening in many situations! |

Wow...an air humping vortex... |
Oh my, but that's funny!
I've never seen that done - is there anyway to capture it on film? |

I've never seen that done - is there anyway to capture it on film? Capture which one...being sucked into the vortex or just the plain old air humping... |
Actually either one or both would be good! |
Beau is really tall - I bet it was so fun going out there with both of them, even if they were more interested in other things! I LOVED the analogy:

I gotta get a picture if Clyde decides to be all brokeback about herding sheep! |

What if it's female sheep though? I'll have to take a video of it because a picture won't do the air hump justice. It's seriously like he's possessed or something! |
Watch out sheep! 'Cause Clyde's coming to herd you and he's gonna be excited! |
Our Oliver was a herder like Beau. He had his HCT through AHBA, and also worked our own sheep. Our instructor said most OES herd in the "drover" style. That's like if you were taking a herd of sheep to market down a country road, they would just push them along at a walk. They needed to only move them at the pace a person walks. Your pictures look just like the ones I have of Oliver.
I'll introduce myself on an appropriate page. Our Ollie is ATB, and we are currently looking at getting another through the MN OES rescue! Dawn |
