not to worry latose is sugar and you know what starch is
Xylitol is a healthy, natural sweetener.

A naturally occurring 5-carbon sugar alcohol found in many fruits and vegetables, Xylitol is even produced in small amounts by the human body (up to 11g per day). Commercially it is manufactured from xylan hemicellulose sources such as Birch trees in Finland, cane bagasse in China, and soon hopefully, corn cobs in the US. It is the sweetest of the polyols and just as sweet as sugar.

Most dogs are extremely lactose intolerant, so he may have an upset tummy for a few days.
OESDs are pretty tough. We had a shop OESD who ate shop rags, bolts almost anything and he was always fine. My current OESD ate saran wrap and it came out ok. My first OESD ate several pieces of string that came off of a couple roasts. None ever skipped a beat.
