Question for my new Allie

She is a little matted. The gray fur seems it would be easier to get the mattes out but she has some in her white fur around where the people had kept her collar on her. I tried calling a couple places and they said they might have to shave her if she has mattes. She is not in full coat (about medium) and I don't want her shaved. Is there any type of detangler that I could use to help with the mattes? I have about 4 different brushes and combs but the mattes in her white fur are very hard. Any ideas without having to shave her?

For a rescue I would recommend shaving her anyway, it will give you a chance to make sure her skin is healthy and to see if there are any sores, bites etc that need to be treated.
Also, I think it would make it easier to bond with her if your first few days are not spent dematting, which can take a very long time and can be painful for the dog, especially when the matting is severe.
If they are not too bad I would suggest an Oster Undercoat Rake. It will slice up the mats, then you can comb them out.

Definitely thin the hair out. If the stripper tool that Willowsprite listed looks a little too frightening, try a double toothed rake. PetSmart has a decent one that is pretty cheap. It'l definitely cut down on the time and effort spent grooming and will leave a lot of hair behind to give her a sheepdog look.
If you are finding single spots of matting, you can just cut straight down into them to loosen them up. Be very careful not to cut your pup! They can get very wiggly during the grooming process. 8O
I would also say to make sure that you pay very close attention to your dog's skin. Bad things can live and grow under matts and cause sores, infections or worse.

After you are totally done grooming, wash with an oatmeal shampoo. It'll help soothe any sore or tender spots.
I regularly strip Clyde's undercoat out and I highly recommend the Mars rake. We aren't showing so taking the undercoat out makes him much easier to groom and keep matts out and you don't lose the fluffy look. Especially with warmer weather on the horizon, she won't miss the extra insulation anyway.

Watch your fingers because the blades are sharp on these kind of rakes!
Here you can find a whole range of Mars Coat King Stripers:
Mars Coat King Stripper 6 Blade Coarse
Mars Coat King Stripper 10 Blade Medium
Mars Coat King Stripper 12 Blade Fine
Mars Coat King Stripper 16 Blade X-Fine
Mars Coat King Stripper 20 Blade X-Fine
Use the 10 blade medium-- both JB Pet and my groomer recommended it. I love it! Until Bear came along, we were virtually matt free since before Christmas!
