I have a 1yr old oes/springer mix who loves to grab you, lightly chew on hands, feets, shirts, pant legs.....etc.... When she is excited she will jump up and try to grab you any ideas how to stop this? -s |

That is actually good news! The fact that she does it lightly means you are 2 steps ahead of the game. She has a soft mouth, so if and when she does do it she will not be hurting anyone. And she is wanting to interact with you, in a playful manner, probably the only way she knows how.
What you want to do is teach her how to get your attention in other ways. Teach her to sit before she gets anything, even a pat. That will be her way of saying "please". But you cannot forget to acknowldge it every tijme for the first few weeks. Nothing worse that when I see my Bosley running up to someone at the dog park, and instead of jumping up in excitement he plops his butt on the ground in front of them, puts his ears back, looks up and smiles and THEY IGNORE HIM! So teach her that her butt needs to be on the grounf for any attention. You can also teach her to bring you a toy when she wants to play. When she gets in a playful mood grab a stuffie, or a ball, or a rope toy and play nicely with her. If she is anything like my Dixie, she will be afraid of it at first, so you may have to be very gentle with it at first. But don't correct her for doing anything you don't want. She first has to learn what is acceptable behavior, and you need to reward her for it. She is learning, and corrections are only used once she knows what to do. And the guideline for that is once she had done it "reliably" or "perfectly" at least 10 times in a row. Good luck! |
I thought I might have more to add, but Bosley's mom just about covered it, just thought you might like to know that someone else agreed... |
