She is a a watercolorist, well known in the low country of SC who died a couple of years ago. She does alot of paintings of Charleston SC but she also does some paintings of ocean. My son and his wife LOVE the ocean (as I do). On ebay I found one of her (signed) prints of the beach that I have always admired for a ridiculously low price of $40.00 so I scooped it up. AN INCREDIBLE PRICE!!!! I was quite excited with my purchase and carried it immediately off to the local frame shop for framing. The owner is a friend and I got carried away with the matting , double matting, acid free backing etc etc and before you know it had accumulated a framing bill of $221.38 Oh well I thought, it's my son and his BEEEEEEUTIFUL WIFE I picked the print up this week, it's lovely and decided that rather than risk packing it myself I would take it to my local pack and mail and let them ship it. So yesterday I carted it to the UPS store to let them handle it with care.................it ONLY cost me $68.73 for them to handle my lovely print Oh and I forgot to mention that, as usual I didn't check the "shipping and handling on my e-bay "deal" which was $23.00. So I was able to get an "amazing deal" for the INCREDIBLE PRICE of $353.11 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I happened to be browsing the website of a Charleston art gallery this morning and found the same print, frramed and ready to ship for $150.00.......................... Oh well, It's for my son and his BEEEEEUTIFUL WIFE |

Yeah, but I bet the frame at the Charleston gallery wasn't exactly perfect for the print!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it! I won't go into detail about my similar ebay purchases . . . like the $40 medicine cabinet for the bathroom that ended up at the auto body shop to get painted to exactly match the blue in the wallpaper . . . . Framing is EXPENSIVE, but so much fun! |
LOL
What a good MIL you are. |

Ohhh my!
Did I mention the price Joan and I paid for our wedding? We could have each had beeeeeeeutiful Russian spouse for so much less! Ow.... I feel your pain. |
My wonderful Hubby got me a watercolor from an Art Gallery that he did some work at. He told the person that I was from NJ and grew up seeing the NY skyline on a daily basis. The person gave him the picture for doing such great work.
I was so excited and immediatley took it down to the framing place my Mom recommended. $235 later it was hanging in my living room. So much for my present...lol My Mom also had one of my photos that I took and framed for me. It looks gorgeous....but cost Mom quite a bit. So don't feel bad Ginny....especially when it comes to Art. I am sure your son and his wife will LOVE IT!!! That will make it all worth it |
Hi,
Ginny I swear we are twins seperated at birth! I do stuff like that all the time!! Like Jil said...yeah but I bet this frame was WAY BETTER than the one the other gallery would have chosen....maybe they would have piced a inexpensive 40 dollar frame!! Aha!! So there you go...you made a good choice and again like Jil said...that's your story and stick to it! You son and his beautiful bride are going to love it! Marianne and the boys |
HAHAHAHAHA, actually it would be TRIPLETS seperated at birth since I'm already a twin WHICH COULD BE since my Mom didn't even expect TWINS................maybe when you popped out they said OH MY SHE'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO HANDLE THIS and shipped you up to BC |
hehe, what a good mom/MIL you are |
Print from e-bay $40.00
Shipping $23.00 Framing $221.38 Packing $68.73 A mother's love PRICELESS!!! |
Funny, Ginny! We also have friends who own a framing shop, and even the smallest things cost a fortune! We bought two small posters while on vacation last year, and all I wanted was a metal frame, plain glass and NO matting. $175 later, I got what I asked for! It cost us $400 to get our son's college diploma framed - double matted, plus we had shadow boxes cut out for the tassles from his two schools (double major) and the pins from each of the schools. Yikes!
Have to admit that anything we've ever gotten professionally framed has looked terrific, but I just can't afford to do it as often as I'd like. Hey, it's only money, right??? Chris |
YIKES CHRIS!!! My house payment is only a little more than that!!!! |

Framing always gives me chest pain!!! Our really expensive stuff we send out to get custom framed. It's all weird stuff so it needs weird frames. Here's the website: www.framefetish.com I'm sure everybody but VerveUp and Jil will think it's too weird but the guy does amazing work! You do pay for amazing though!!!!!
For the other stuff we get framed we go to Framer's Workshop. It's a do it yourself kind of place. You pick everything, they cut the frames and mattes then you put it together. Most of the time, it's a hot guy helping too! They are very reasonable too!!! |

Chris Exactly! You can always print...oops...I mean earn...you can always earn more!! |
I did the same thing with 2 mirrors.... mirror itself cheap, frame $200 + each... I could have gone to bed bath and beyond and gotten 6 mirrors for the price I payed....shh dont tell B......I told him they were only $120.00 for both |
That's funny, Darcy! I didn't tell Dale how much it cost to get Spencer's diploma framed either - told him it was $300. And even at that, he nearly fainted!! |
