The best thing to do, Lark, is to buy the size he'll need as an adult and use the divider to partition is off to a smaller size. You can add space for him as he grows. If the crate is large enough for him to go to the other end to potty and then return to his side, he will do so. That's why you need to keep it smaller to start. Most of the wire crates come with dividers. |
You can do her a BIG favour by borrowing one for a bit and start to feed the pup in it. At that age it is not unusual for them to sleep in it.
My pups always had an open crate available to them and they would often crawl in to play and then fall asleep in it. And hten I would close the door the odd time, when I need to! |
HI Larkles & other new parents
All of mine (10 month OES, 2 yr OESX, 3 yr Neardie) LOVE their crates...because only good things happen in it! I put surprises in their crates throughout the day..treats, toys, blankets. I feed in their kennel with the door open & sometimes closed...so not to keep such a rigid routine! Sometimes they do sleepovers in another shaggies' crate...every once in a while there will be 2 in a crate BUT that usually doesn't last long I did not start with a small section because Beebles came from Kaye & was almost completely potty trained Beebles & Cassie have mastered the Poochie-bells http://poochie-pets.net/index.html Y'all can see a pix of Beebs at 4 months on the FAQ page http://poochie-pets.net/FAQ.html She was a quick study & I'd recommend trying the bells with your puppers! Kaye uses doggie doors...good idea if you can safely set it up. All 3 wire crates are in the kitchen...36" PetMate Crates. I bought a couple other brands & returned them after I set them up...too flimsy! I prefer the wire to the vari-kennel...just personal preference...I cover 1/2 of each crate with a quilt ...to cozy it up! I started leaving them in the kennel for 5-10 minutes at a time with me just off in another part of the house & walking through the kitchen every once in a while! I can now leave them for 4-5 hrs & return to sleeping happy puppers..no stress! That was very important to me...their safety & no stress! I give them a Kong stuffed with either or a combination of kibble, apple or carrot chunks, low fat cream cheese or peanut butter, canned Merrick with a Wellness apple, peanut, yogurt biscuit as a stopper...Kongs are usually frozen overnight...last longer Gee, I have rambled on Crates work well for us...take up a lot of room though Diane...so excited for y'all PS We usually exercise/play quite a bit before we "kennel-up!" |
You guys are great! I want to print out these answers so I will have them ready when the pup arrives next month
I am planning to let the pup sleep in a pack n' play next to our bed at night to minimize accidents. During the day, a crate in the kitchen for when the boys are wild and the pup needs a den or when we go to work until he is out of the destructive phase! Took my shepherd about a year I have heard that Kaye's pups come mostly potty trained and I am looking forward to that, let me tell you! I can't put a puppy door in the kitchen so I may try the bells- what a cute idea! |
