Happy 21st
Well, it wasn’t. Jonathon was born with Spina Bifida. A birth defect of the spine that caused paralysis and several other problems. I thought at the time it had to be the scariest day of my life. Little did I know how many scary days would come. Jonathon had surgery within hours, to close the opening on his back. Three more surgeries followed before he was a month old. Over the years he has had at least 20 more (I have lost count) and numerous stays in the hospital for various things. Sometimes for months at a time. When he was little, his leg bones were so frail that they would break (at least 6 breaks on each leg). When he became a teenager he started having seizures. Last summer we almost lost him to septic shock. Jonathon is currently battling a pressure sore. He cannot sit in his wheelchair so he has been confined to bed since September. You would think that through all this a person would be bitter or angry. Not Jonathon. He has always been a happy-go-lucky guy. A trip to the doctor’s office, o.k. they have stickers. Have to stay in the hospital, “You think Mary will be my nurse again?” A cast? “I want blue this time”. Oh surgery again, “can I have Sprite afterwards?” He is always the first to want to help someone. He worries more about someone else’s pain than his own. We can’t go anywhere in town that someone doesn’t know him. He has never met a stranger. He must have been a sheepie in a past life! I guess the point of this whole story is what a positive influence he has had on my life. I have found inner strength that I never new was there. I look at each day as a new opportunity. It may have its trials but I will get through them. There are blessing in every day. Sometimes they are a little hard to see but you will find them if you look. As soon as he was born I knew his name would be Jonathon. It wasn’t till later that I found out the meaning is: “A gift from God”. And he truly has been. HAPPY 21ST |

So far you've just been a voice on the telephone when I've called to speak to your mom. I was so impressed by how upbeat you were, knowing that you were confined to your bed for months. I really hope we get we get to meet soon. Maybe we can get Mojo and Nelson together to play?

When I first read the subject title and that this was your kid, I thought I'd be replying "what's the point in wishing him a happy birthday.. he won't remember it in the morning (drunk)" ...but then I read the thread and was blessed to be a part of a bigger story. What a sweet recap of your son's 21 years of "accomplishment." I'm happy to hear that he's in great spirits and loves life. What an inspiration.
