But anyhow, while I was shaving him, I experimented with other dog's hairstyles... I hope you get a kick out of it, I know I did!! heheheh!! Here is a before picture taken the dreadful day of the shearing: First off, we had the Lowchen look (means little lion dog): When he found out I stopped without shaving his chest, you should have seen the sorrowful look he gave me, LOL!! Next, we have the "Chinese Crested Hairless" look: And after I was done taking humiliating photographs, we have the finished look: I think I may do the lowchen look for real next time. At least half of him was fuzzy!! Look how he is totally silver now! Also, he had some blue spots I noticed, about quarter sized! Boy I am such a mean mommy, LOL! |
|
ugh i give up, the pics look fine in "preview..." go figure. Guess you'll have to cut and paste folks! |
LOL at the pictures |
What a great idea and how fun (-for you!) - not sure how excited Roo was about it!
He looks really sleek and ready for the pool! |
I think he looks great, bet he feels better too!!! |
LOL Too funny.... You did a good job... but why leave the hair on his head? LOL It doesn't match. LOL |
Here are the pics I took of Dancer during her being shaved last time. LOL

I love the different hairstyles ...gave him a chance to briefly be another dog/breed. |
Ha Ha Ha that was great, mmm the lowchen look LOL |
Willowsprite wrote: LOL Too funny.... You did a good job... but why leave the hair on his head? LOL It doesn't match. LOL
cos i bought an oes for a reason hate to say it, but he is way less attractive to me completely bald, had to leave some fuzzy somewhere! |
Hee Hee! Imagine the looks you would have gotten if you'd taken him for a walk during the Lowchen phase!
When Bentley was shaved down in July I left him with a Beatles do, which totally fit his personality. When I look at those pictures now that he's in full coat, they look funny to me. But I'd do it again and probably will come summer! Roo looks great, he has personality! |
So funny. You did a great job clipping him.
Roofus really doesn't look too upset about modeling the different styles. |
I think its so funny that a simple haircut can almost make a dog look like an entirely different breed!! The first time my husband saw an OES shaved he was like, "OH! They look like a good rounded dog beneath all that hair!" |
He looks great.. I applaud you for the ability to do it your self... I always say I will the next time, but never do. |
hehe, what fun to play "dress up" for a little big anyway He looks great. |
He's adorable, at any hair length! That's one thing about our sheepies - we can have at least 3 dogs in one, depending on their hair length! |
Those were great.... its amazing how such big looking dogs have such little chicken legs. I know poor Balou gets so uncomfortable with how he looks the first few days- but in the end it is so much better for him. |
I cannot believe that you did this to your dog, nor the people who think that this is funny. Being a dog groomer I come across many people who are just too lazy, or have no clue how to take care of their dog's coats, or too cheap to have their pet groomed on a regular basis.
Now your dog has no coat. It does not look cute and it can actually get a sunburn in the son. Perhaps next time you shouldn't get a long haired breed. There are plenty of lovable, great breeds out there with short coat. Really, shame on you. |

We love our dogs hair or no hair because under it all, it's the personality that counts. These photos were posted last winter and by now he probably has grown back a nice coat. I haven't met an OES yet who doesn't appreciate a break during the shave down process and many of us don't feel comfortable letting a stranger tend to our dogs. OES enjoy the feeling of freedom they get with a haircut. Don't go spoiling their fun. |

Huh -- these must be your clients, right? Seems to me that your livelihood is kind of dependent on the people who are too lazy and/or have no clue how to take care of their dog's coats. As for the ones that are too cheap to be regular, maybe it is your disdainful attitude that is turning them off. While I completely admire the folks who can keep their dogs in full coat, there is no reason to attack the people that need -- or want -- to shave their dogs. It is just fur. It grows back. |
I'm such a mean owner.
Mulligan the Old English Sheepdog gets a summer shavedown |
Well Slummy, not all of us have air conditioning for our dogs. I like the feel of the shaved dog. I also like to allow my dog to run wild in the grass and brambles. After all pets need to have their own life. Lord knows that my life is not that intresting. I understood why they do not enjoy brushing all the time when the cat desided that my hair was better brushed out on the pillow. You do have a point it is better to spend your together time brushing and washing, instead of running and swimming. I thought you might need one. |
Geez, what is it with Groomers???
The first time I called around here to get Pepsi groomed, I had a groomer freaking out on me, saying that you never shave OES. That they are a long hair dog, just like you wouldn't shave a Collie... IDIOTS! They don't realize that OES have hair and that it keep growing and growing. So obviously I did not use her as she obviously knew NOTHING about the breed. Obviously Sunshine Sunny knows NOTHING about OES. SHAME on YOU for posting about a breed you have no clue about! Sunburn??? Really??? Well I have lived in the Desert for three years and my dogs have NEVER gotten sunburn and they are always shaved for the summers. Why, you might ask???? Because it's 118 degrees! And no their hair does NOT keep them cool. |
I have to agree with everyone...let us have some fun with the shaving...it DOES grow back. Like Pepsi's mom, I too live in the desert and trust me....they MUCH prefer the shave down to full coat.....as it is, it takes Panda a long time to cool down after a 7:30 pm walk....I cant imagine how uncomfortable it would be for her in full coat.
Would you want to take a walk with a full legnth fox coat on in over 100 degrees?????? |
I live in (sometimes) yucky muggy NC. When I clipped Hannah's hair she acted like a new dog, like wow this feels great Mom, thanks. She was more active and playful. It was also easier to find the tick she picks up in the yard. I am thinking about triming her again because the tick are so bad this year. |
My dogs also get far more active after a shave....here they are doing the "sheepie 500"!
ZOOM! |
lol
for a groomer, you're no expert on dog breeds. OES are traditionally sheared when the sheep are. You don't seriously think a farmer has time to brush out a full coated oes? not to mention the heat factor. Also, for those of us whose oes love to swim, not only does all that hair weigh them down, but it takes a good 8-10 hours to dry after a swim and gets all kinds of fun mats. When roobear is shaved, it takes about 20 minutes and, amazingly, no mats! I've worked in the pet industry for more than five years (currently as a pet store manager) and I have never seen nor heard of any dog besides a hairless one getting a sunburn. How many times have you refused to shave someone's dog? I'm betting never. Stop trolling the forums and go groom some dogs. |

Actually, any newly sheared dog is susceptible to a sunburn. Any place where the skin is exposed (bridge of the nose), thin (like the tips of the ears), or always in the sun (like down the spine) can burn. Nothing a little sunscreen can't prevent, though. |
Well, Here's another poor abused dog
Poor thing, looks miserable doesn't he! LIGHTENUP SUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
heres another unhappy puppy with a hair-cut...

I've never gotten a sunburn from anybody's "son", no matter how close to them I am! And every groomer that I've talked to about doing Carl (No one I don't know is going to touch my show dogs! I don't care how amazing of a groomer you think you are.) ALWAYS bitch and huff when they hear he is an OES and they automatically want to shave him before they even hear length of coat or the owner's history with grooming. There are very few groomers out there who want to do a full brush out, wash and blow out of a dog in coat. The easiest answer for everyone, including groomers, is always to shave them down. |
I've always believed that the pink skin uder the white hair is albino and will burn if exposed to the sun. The dark skin under the dark hair is pigmented and should be safe for very short periods uncovered and exposed to the sun.
When I shave down a sheepie (look at me, I sound like I've done it twice!) his dark body hair gets shaved with a #10 and his white hair is done with a #3F where possible. |
Actually, in all seriousness; we shave Tasker down for the beach almost every year. I cannot imagine the sand and the salt and the FLEAS on the beach getting into long hair. But I am very careful to give him a coat of sunscreen along with everyone else. |
We shave ours down in summer, (in spite of being in Alaska, we DO have to worry about overheating, as our dogs spend a lot of time oudoors with us! ) Abby has gotton sunburned, but only across her snout (an area that would be vulnerable even with a full coat). We deal with it by using infant sunscreen that comes in a spray bottle, the kind meant to be used on a baby's scalp. |

One of the best groomers I know loves oes its his favorite breed to groom!!! He does beau for me |
My old groomer used to show OES and as good as they were they still cried and whined about. I don't doubt that there are good groomers out there that like to do OES and do it well. Those people are few and far between and more than likely will be nominated for sainthood!!! |
Here's my abused girl but this pic is a couple years old now:
|
awww poor baby LOL i'm still trying to figure out if you are trying to give her a mohawk or make her look like a horse with a mane :D:D:D |
I think it is obvious that the majority posting here really love and care for their sheepies. The point about potential sunburn is well taken if a shaved dog is left exposed to the sun. Pink skin does burn (as Ron points out correctly). Proper care will prevent this- just be careful right after the hair cut and use sunscreen if needed.
Even indoors, our girls need shorter hair in Texas. |

Now that's just plain funny! (Oh, I'm sorry, we were being chastised by somebody for being mean to our Sheepies). Shame, Shame, VerveUp, that poor little girl will suffer irreparable metal harm from the teasing she will receive from Roofus. (HeHeHeHe, snicker, snicker). You should know how judgemental Sheepies can be about using the wrong hair products. |
ROTFLMAO |
L M A O !!! |
That is too funny.... I laugh and shake my head,......
So, is it a big mohawk or a horse?? |
Couldn't help but wonder if there was a forum for the oes to talk about their humans...this pic would definitely go under the Antic Section and would probably with a subject something like "Look what my mom did today?"
|

I ended up having to shave it off within an hour. She was very freaked out by it flapping in the wind on her bare skin. |
She needs a Roman shield or a spear or something to go with that helmet. |
Tess's person wrote: Even indoors, our girls need shorter hair in Texas.
There are a couple here with their long coats! |
My girls must be wimps then because they are absolutely miserable when their hair gets longer (and they are indoor sheepies). They both love cold weather.
Texas is too hot from mid-May until late September (most years) for a real "shaggy dog" (my opinion as a native Texan). I hate when they just lay on the tile floor and pant while looking at me like "Can we move somewhere up North?" So, they get puppy cuts every month most of the year. Show dogs would be an obvious exception. |
